Government shutdown a sign that Congress has truly given up

By Post Editorial Board

January 22, 2018

Both sides of the aisle in Congress are grumbling that President Trump isn’t jumping in to somehow settle the standoff that produced the government shutdown. But this is a chance for lawmakers to get past their addiction to posturing and blame-gaming — and back to real legislating.

The simple truth is that Congress has become by far the most dysfunctional branch of the federal government. It has spent decades dodging accountability by (among other things) ceding power and authority to the executive and judicial branches. Left and right, members posture to their bases, confident their voters will always blame the other side. (Most “centrists” are no better; they just posture for a different audience.)
Yes, you can blame Democrats for this shutdown, since they’re refusing to fund the government even temporarily without action on the Dreamers — action that requires arduous work compromising on immigration issues that have defied compromise for decades now.

Or you can blame Republicans: However thin their majorities, it’s their job to find the votes to pass a spending bill. So what if it’s a nightmare to get the Democratic votes they need in the Senate while still being able to pass the same measure in the House?

But the bottom line is that Congress hasn’t been doing its work through regular order for years now, whichever party was in control. Everything has been “must-pass”-omnibus this and kick-the-can that, even with presidents digging in to round up the last votes.

Whenever they work out this impasse, it’d be good for every member of both the House and Senate to step back, examine their consciences — and start figuring out how to do a better job serving the America people.

Honestly regardless if it's the demo's fault or the repub's fault or both they are both always acting childish, always bashing each other and constantly at war with each other. I suppose they have never heard a kingdom against itself cannot stand.

We have the same nonsense here in Australia.
Governed by a political class of professional freeloaders and parasites.
All in it for themselves.
Deliver results you must be kidding.
30 pieces of silver still buys a lot of favour.

To answer your question-------
The government is still headed down that road that lead it farther and farther away from the will of the people.
Faster and faster they go.

That was one of the most accurate and descriptive comments on any typical governing body that I have ever read.

I would run for politics if I wasn't a Christian.
But you know how it is you can't serve two masters.
Rats! I could be rich.

Proverbs 15:16
Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith.

It is my belief that a person truly living as a Christian could not make it as a politician.

Assassination comes to mind.

I remember a movie with Warren Beatty "Heaven Can Wait" and in this story he is sent back to Earth as a billionaire. He agrees with the complaints from some indigenous tribal Amazonian Indians and modifies the mining and deforestation project that his company is about to embark on.
We make enough money, we can afford to accommodate these people and compromise our profits.
So the family shoot him.

I believe u are right on this - a Christian politician won't go very far or last very long in this age.

Which is why Trump is kind of fascinating to me in this respect as i believe in scripture it sez the 'world' loves it's own - and yet the 'world' hates Trump with an unhinged fury. This is quite telling to me.

Congress was a good idea when it started but now its just a political battleground... I think one of the reasons why its is so dysfunctional is because neither party has a strong leader. Trump is trying but he is not eloquent enough or influential enough to bring congress together. The backing down of the dems yesterday was the result of Trump's negotiating skills (in this case it was the silent treatment), but that doesn't really help bridge the gap between the parties. All we can really hope for is that God's will be done and that it is in the best interest of the american people..

If you really dig into what was the intent of the founders.... they purposely designed the federal government in a way, so nothing gets done. I prefer it that way also.

If you look at the government of the past, you'll find the same shenanigans going on. The only difference is the players.
