I see where a driverless Uber hit and killed a woman in Tempe, Az.

When will this foolishness stop.
Uber and the auto maker should be charged with murder.

something, what company is aloud to test something like this and place people in harms way.

they need work the bugs out at a place that does not have people walking around. that's stupid and should be charged and those in DMV or who ever that has aloud a public testing ground for a automated driver.

I see a lot of driverless cars with people behind the steering wheel driving them.

You are going to stop it by protesting it. Ultimately, it will become safer than driving them ourselves. They just have to get the bugs worked out. They already have planes flying themselves, it is progress that we can not stop. We just have to learn to live with it.

your right it will be safer, but why they tested in real action is not very smart.

I wonder if someone could hack into these driverless cars and program them to hit people... Could be the plot of a movie, yes?? Fast and Furious 20??

Or better yet, someone could program it to drive off a cliff or a bridge when an important VIP is riding inside... Maybe a James Bond movie...

I disagree partly because all computerized tech can be hacked quite easily....but it will be safer in terms of braking, speed etc but someone with nefarious intents could easily hijack a car with even a basic smartphone...its been proven.....its harder to hack a human unless they were brainwashed from an early age or tortured.....

When the first cars hit the streets they couldn't go over 25 mph. Couldn't! And yet, they were killing pedestrians right and left.

How? Because people were used to walking across the street with no expectation of anything worse than a 2 mph horse and buggy coming along, and horses stop if there is a person in front of them.

It was bad. Very bad! Remember when the news reported every soldier -- by name -- killed in Viet Nam that day? Those kinds of numbers and there just weren't that many cars around to make it that high a number yet.

Something changed. First the people riled and wanted to do away with cars. They almost won. But the people with cars and the car manufacturer's were richer, so they were able to put pressure on legislators. So what happened? New laws on the road. One of the rallying cries was calling the people just walking into the middle of the road, "Jaywalkers." They were the stupid people. The people to point to and laugh at. Stigma. Stop signs to tell drivers to look for pedestrians. Walkways at corners for pedestrians.

Time to face facts. Driverless cars are going to come, just as sure as the auto came. The only thing that changes is how it works and our attitudes toward them.

You and I may never come to terms with driverless cars. A century ago, another generation never came to terms with the automobile.

It doesn't matter. Progress happens anyway.

They didn't test it in real action. They tested it on special tracks. They brought it to the streets when it passed the test track. And then they found another kink they didn't anticipate. Same thing happened when they started making driver cars. Same thing happening now with recalls on cars already out on the street.

Is your car made in this century? And, assuming it is, why are you driving it, because it is computerized and can be hacked.

This is common fare for the crime shows. I remember seeing just that happen on NCIS several years ago. CSI:Cyber. If you're worried it can be done with a driverless car, why aren't you worried it can already be done to your car?

And it's not harder to hack a human. DUI means something. So does driving while texting, driving when sleepy, and everything else we do that's just plain dumb when driving.

From what I read, the victim was jaywalking, and in AZ
jaywalkers are supposed to yield the right of way to traffic.
Also, the UBER car was doing 5 under the speed limit.
Those factors will probably shield UBER from any criminal charges.
Having said all that, I don't like this idea of "driverless" cars.
It's one thing to have a robot cook your hamburger,
but removing spiritual elements such as compassion
and sympathy out of dangerous activities is not wise.

Yes, but what if it was reported whenever a human had an accident. We'd never hear the end of the reports....
