The world's greatest pound-for-pound boxer, Manny Pacquiao, is now born again, praise God.

He's a legend here in the Philippines, and he's not just the greatest boxer (who has the world record for winning the most belts in different weight classes), but he's also a full time congressman, also a singer, an actor, a businessman, has his own TV show, etc.

Anyway, he now says he's addicted to Bible study. And he says if he had died last year he would have gone to hell for sure. When asked what his greatest desire is now, he simply said to learn more about God.

I don't think this has made much news worldwide (like his blockbuster fights do), but his new born again experience is news here in the Philippines.

Sorry the interview is mostly Tagalog, but there's some English. :D (And I have summarized it above.) Here's the link:

Wait what? He was already a Christian I thought! He was a devout Catholic Christian as of 2009.

Hi Dscherck

Yes he was a "devout Catholic" for many years but NOW he says if he had died during all that time of being a devout Catholic, he would have gone to HELL. You see, people are very religious in the Philippines, but still most of them are on a highway to hell just like in every country.

As Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3)

And "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." (Matthew 7:13-14)

And "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 7:21)

And to be enitrely honest here, the Catholic church leads a lot of people to hell, by misleading them into putting faith in Mary and all the non-biblical religious stuff they do.

Manny Pacquiao has now discovered the Bible, and is studying it for himself now, instead of just believing and following all that worthless religion that he deceived himself with for many years.

And indeed he was very religious for all these years (prayed before every fight, even gave glory to God saying "without God I am nothing", etc.), but he wasn't born again. He was just religious (like many Catholics, and even a lot of Protestants).

I don't think anyone can know whether they are going to heaven or hell. In the end it's up to God's mercy.

That said, I was raised as a devout Protestant Christian, and read the bible constantly. I still do, and it was through the Scriptures that I was lead to the Catholic Church. Protestant Christianity gave me a strong desire to read the Scriptures constantly, and a desire to share my faith with others. And it was through my love of reading the Scriptures that the Lord eventually lead me to the Catholic Church.

I'm grateful for all that I learned as a Protestant, there's a definite working of the Holy Spirit in many Protestant communities, and the zeal for the word of the Lord is amazing, but that said, I've never been to a more Christ centered church than a Catholic Church. And I've yet to find anything the Catholic Church teaches that contradicts Scripture. Remember that non-biblical doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. After all, we're told by the Apostle John that Our Lord did many other things that weren't written down.

And I think it's disappointing to hear someone call religion disappointing. Christ didn't do away with the Law (aka, religion) but rather fulfilled it. And while it's fine to rail against hypocrisy in religion, to call all religion worthless is to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

The Catholic Church is the world's largest charitable organization, bar none. Here in the US, 1/6 of the people receiving hospital care do it at a Catholic affiliated hospital. And the Catholic Church has consistently been the strongest (though not the only) advocate for the sanctity of life from conception to the very end. Just last month over half a million people came out to March for Life here in DC, the majority of them were Catholic. The Catholic Church helped establish some of the first universities, and has been at the forefront of science. And it continues to bring the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus to everyone, offering them the gift of hope in Christ. There are many, many martyrs found in it's history, brave men and women who gave their very lives to spread the Gospel. And this continues on to this very day as Catholics shed their blood for the Gospel.

I'm grateful for his new zealousness, but I feel sorrow that he so easily dismisses his earlier faith.

That's ironic. Every time I open the bible, it seems to disagree quite strongly with Roman Catholicism.

I for one am quite glad that Pacquiao is heading in the right direction.

Praying to humans is idolatry.

Here's a scripture for you:

1 John 5:13 "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."

1 John 5:19 "We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one."

haha that happens to me too...actually reading the Bible is how I converted from Catholicism to what people call Protestantism, which for me it's actually a relationship with God.

Well I hope Pacquiao continues growing in his relationship with God and takes this opportunity to be a living testimony.

So, Mary and the Saints are gods?
Nope. We ask them to pray for us, but we don't pray to them. At least, not in the sense that they are divine. We use pray in the sense of asking. Just like I can say, "My dearest brother in Christ, Jimmydiggs, I pray thee to ask God to watch over me in my time of trouble."

Obviously I'm not considering you to be equal to God, but I am "praying" to you.

Eternal life yes, but where we'll spend it isn't guaranteed. Even the Apostle Paul wasn't 100% sure where he'd end up. He was hopeful, but he wrote numerous times of his "hope" of salvation. And we note that in his letter to the Philippians he shares in Christ's suffering so that "if possible" he may be saved.
We all have eternal life, but there's no way to know for sure where we'll spend that life. We can have reasonable hope, but hope isn't a guarantee as the Apostle Paul warns us repeatedly.

considering we cannot earn our salvation it is complety through faith, do you think Paul was worried he would stop believing in Jesus? i think not

i think paul was worried about not forfilling the mission Christ had gave him

he was not worried loosing his salvation

"See then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off" (Rom. 11:22)

"I pummel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified" (1 Cor. 9:27).

"I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby justified. It is the Lord who judges me" (1 Cor. 4:4).

"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." Philippians 2:12

We can see that Paul warns us that we have to continue in our journey of faith, lest we be cut off. And he even remarks that he struggles and works to subdue his body lest he be disqualified. And he admits that while he's not aware of anything to disqualify himself, he's not the final arbiter. And as he was in prison, he tells us that we need to work out salvation. Showing us that salvation isn't just a one time event for us, but a continuing process.

We can be hopeful, but the heart can be very deceitful (Jer. 17:9), and we must be careful to not be overconfident.

Manny always had an air of humility about him. At least that's the way he came across the many times I watched him fight on T.V. One of my all-time favourites without a doubt. This is great news indeed :)
