There is currently a ban in the USA for gay men giving blood.

Because a sizable proportion of HJV positive people are gay men, the ban has been in place since 1977.

There is talk of lifting the ban.

Yet according to a CNN article...

"Men who have sex with men still are disproportionately affected by the virus and account for nearly half the approximately 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention"

--->As blood donations decline, U.S. ban on gay donors is examined - CNN.com

If this is all true, is it possible political correctness will end up putting our blood supply at risk?

Are there really that many gay guys out there willing to give blood compared to the rest of the population?

Maybe we should allow greater priority to immigrants who donate blood!

Way out in left field...

It will put the supply at risk if they don't test the blood for HIV. Problem is that testing is expensive, and giving blood has always been free. Either the government will have to pay labs to test the blood (which means more taxes) or people will have to start paying to give blood.

Another option is to require folks to get themselves tested for HIV before giving blood, but that's kind of a hassle and most people will probably just stop giving blood.

They already test all the blood they take for HIV...they have too. I mean you didnt honestly think they would take people at their word? No, all blood donated to the Red Cross is already tested for a variety of diseases before it goes out to the public. Their is no reason not to allow homosexuals to donate. I have some gay friends that just lie and donate anyways.

There are tens of millions of heterosexuals in Africa with HIV, in fact MORE people are heterosexual that have HIV in the world than homosexual.
