It is a bogeyman that somehow the idea of a single united earth would necessarily fall into the control of some hypothetical "anti Christ". Right now the harshest critics of this idea comes from the evangelical Christian community.

It is unlikely, there are far too many differences between cultures, nations and rouge elements for a truly united single one world government to ever come into being. Maybe in another 100 years, but I cannot see any steps that could be taken that would bring it about in less than that, unless there is some world wide catastrophe like an asteroid strike or one of the "super volcano" erupted.

if you take the view that the "world" in Daniel is Jerusalem, and whomever controls Jerusalem, controls the world - then Daniel makes a great deal more sense.

it is more likely that an Islamic gathering of nations will evolve and since quite a few of them were part of the Roman Empire, well .....

Right now, there are 4 spheres of power, the north, south, east, and west with Israel in the middle. These are also represented by the 4 beasts in Daniel. The antichrist will unite the 4 into a one world theological system by the fulfillment of biblical scripture. The antichrist will claim to be the living God of Abraham and will rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. I believe Jesus is coming back in the flesh and will challenge the antichrist in his beliefs and will cause the antichrist to be killed.

It is because the UNlikelihood of uniting the world that will make the antichrist so popular and cause so many to be deceived by him. Considering the shape of the world right now, who would not be amazed and follow such a man? Only those who are wise enough to know what has already been prophecied concerning this man.
