Pope Benedict XVI has announced he will resign on February 28th, saying he no longer had the strength to fulfill the duties of his office.

The 85-year-old Pope announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals on Monday morning.

"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," he told the cardinals.

"I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiriual nature, must be carried out not only by words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering.

Vatican spokesman, Federico Lombardi said: "The pope announced that he will leave his ministry at 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) on February 28."

I read something about this a few weeks ago. I've never heard of a pope stepping down. They usually just die. I will have to look up the information that you provided. Considering current events and the mindset of the world I think this could very well be the last pope.

Just thinking here...Some say that when the False Prophet comes along to assist the Antichrist, it will be the Pope. I'm not sure just how I feel about that. It makes sense in a way. At least in the gentile world he will be considered the leading religious authority. I think a lot of catholics are waking up to the corruption in the vatican and system. I know some catholics and they do not believe in the infallibility of the pope or venerate Mary as perfect.

Interesting days ahead. I think believers would be wise to start searching the scriptures again.

I have never heard of this guy but he must be someone special and close to god because of all the talk about him. As for if he is the start of everything prophesied about the begining of the end...Idk we would definately need alot of proof in scriptures. Let me know if anyone figures this all out, because while i doubt it can truly be this close i am ready at the same time. Love ya Jesus I'm gonna hug the crap out of you.( That was meant as a loving gesture)

he held the Official Office of Grand Inquistor...(which is still extant). < they can torture ya if they want to...why shouldn't they? we said Gitmo is okay.

on the night of his 'election', he said all religions outside of Roman Catholicism are defective, and he said he was against the dictatorship of relativism - just as we might expect - but did he really mean what he said?

he also oversaw from behind the scenes, and put the finishing touches on Nostra Aetate. (thought crimes ahead):

Nostra Aetate: What is it? < click

though this Commission was under JP - Benny was in on it: (see if any lingo rings a bell - we now "return" to moral "Law"?)

"3. God has created the human person as a social being which by definition places limits on individual human freedom. Moreover freedom of choice is derived from God and therefore is not absolute, but must reflect Divine will and law. Accordingly human beings are called to freely obey the Divine will as manifested in the Creation and in His revealed word.

Jewish tradition emphasizes the Noachide Covenant (cf. Gn 9: 9-12) as containing. the universal moral code which is incumbent on all humanity. This idea is reflected in Christian Scripture in the Book of Acts 15: 28-29.

4. Accordingly the idea of moral relativism is antithetical to this religious world view and poses a serious threat to humanity. Even though the Enlightenment helped bring about a purification from the abuse of religion, secular society still requires religious foundations to sustain lasting moral values. Critical among these is the principal of the sanctity of human life and dignity. Ethical monotheism affirms these as inviolable human rights and therefore can provide inspiration in this regard for society at large."

Bilateral Commission Meeting, Jerusalem, March 11-13, 2007; Adar 21-23, 5767 < click

and he was responsible for jettisoning all restraints on the abominable sin of usury for christians (or anyone) March 27-29, 2012:

"2. The theme of this the 11th meeting of the bilateral commission was titled "Religious perspectives on the current financial crisis: vision for a just economic order".

as well as proclaiming marxism as the new "gospel":

6. Furthermore, just as the Divine gift of wealth places obligations upon the recipient in relation to those less fortunate materially; similarly countries with developed economies have the obligation to recognize their responsibilities and duties towards countries and societies in need – especially in this era of globalization."

Please don't anybody think I believe in Malachy's prophecy just because I found the links. I do believe that if enough people believe something, they will change their actions accordingly. That is not enough to change when Jesus returns, of course, but it is enough to cause something to change in the world.

the malachy 'prophecy' is half forgery...half wishful thinking...and a tiny bit of deliberate orchestration...

the 'prophecy' was not actually written by malachy...it was forged in his name about 450 years after his time... not coincidentally the identifications of the popes are much more precise for the first seventy-four popes on the list...the ones that had already reigned prior to 1595 when the 'prophecy' was published...

after the sixteenth century the remaining thirty-eight identifications on the list are much less obvious...the connections become often quite tenuous and vague...and it looks much more like people trying to interpret the 'prophecy' to fit the reality...

most recently it seems that benedict xvi not only believes in the malachy 'prophecy' but has attempted to orchestrate its fulfillment in three different ways...it is rumored that john paul ii also believed in the 'prophecy' and influenced the current pope's belief on the subject... prior to becoming pope himself...joseph ratzinger scheduled the burial of john paul ii for the day of a solar eclipse...to match 'from the labor of the sun' on the list... then when ratzinger was elected pope...he chose the name benedict xvi to match 'the glory of the olive' on the list...prior to his election the name was considered an unlikely choice except among people who believed in the prophecy...many of whom actually bet on it and made money when ratzinger chose it... benedict also chose 'pax' or 'peace' as his papal motto...again to match 'the glory of the olive' on the list...

this probably doesn't mean that benedict's intent is to 'force' fulfillment of the 'prophecy' in spite of circumstances...but what it does imply is that benedict's belief in the 'prophecy' is so strong that he made his choices in order to 'go along' with what he viewed as something preordained and inviolable...

the description 'peter the roman' at the very end of the prophecy has different interpretations among catholic believers in the malachy 'prophecy'... some believe that there is a gap and that 'peter the roman' does not follow directly after 'the glory of the olive'...basically they see the list as ending with 'the glory of the olive' but then being followed by a disconnected note on the final pope who could come even centuries after 'the glory of the olive'...

one of the most influential malachy enthusiasts...ron conte...adheres to a different gap view... he claims based on a supposed prophecy given by pius x that the next pope will be called pius xiii and will be the 'peter the roman' on the list...but he also believes that there will be more popes after the end of the malachy list...such as a 'pope raphael'

and then some believe that the next pope will be 'peter the roman' and that the world actually will end during his time...

it is unknown which of these views benedict xvi subscribes to...or whether or not he will be able to influence the election of the next pope in order to 'fulfill' his favored opinion...

one thing that is known is that the conclave will be dominated by conservative cardinals...appointed by john paul ii and benedict xvi...and they are almost certain to choose a very conservative pope... an especially conservative pope with a particularly elevated view of the roman hierarchy and the role of the papacy might be temped to make a statement by choosing the unprecedented name 'peter ii'... at the very least a staunchly conservative pope would attempt to remind the world of his claim to successorship of the apostle peter...

one of the frontrunners is cardinal arinze of nigeria...who benedict has appointed to some of the positions he himself held before he was elected pope... arinze has a very high view of the hierarchy and the authority of rome...which has made him popular among conservative catholics... his election could reflect an attempt to match the description of 'peter of rome' by reference to the authority of peter and rome that he would claim... then again another frontrunner is cardinal turkson of ghana whose first name actually -is- peter and would fulfill the 'peter' part regardless of the name he chooses... or they could elect a cardinal who is actually from rome to fulfill the 'roman' part...

Reform of the international financial system
In response to the global economic crisis started in 2008, Cardinal Turkson together with bishop Mario Toso elaborated a proposal to reform the international financial system by creating a Global Public Authority and a Global Bank that consider the interest of all developing countries. The document of 40 pages was officially presented in October 2011 and criticizes the actual structure of International Monetary Fund and other institutions.[20]

:D Yep. Que the bogus end-time "prophets". They come out of the woodwork whenever a new pope is elected, as evidenced already in this thread. Took about a minute and a half for people to start posting false prophesies and preaching that Benedict's resignation signals the start of the apocalypse... again.

When senior leaders come to a place where they can no longer meet the requirements of the position, for whatever reason, retiring is the right course of action. I wonder why it took 611 years to see a Pope act with this integrity.
