Since the end of the Cold War, both Bushs and Obama have been stuffing NATO down Russia's throat. Putin's finally run out of patience. I can't blame him. The Russian Federation certainly is NOT the USSR.

We had a stellar opportunity after the fall of the USSR to forge a lasting and real friendship with the Russia Federation and initially we started down that path. But in the end, we just reverted to treating Russia like the USSR and befriended Communist China instead. Our leaders blew a stellar opportunity with Russia while simultaneously making a very bad choice with regards to China. The result is we are more isolated than ever and much poorer too. Our politicians can't seem to do ANYTHING right.
