A school told an 8-year-old autistic kid he can't bring his Bible to school and read it during free time. Yet the school gave his sister a worksheet that mentions why daddy drinks wine.

(WJBK) - Jessica Cross of Dearborn Heights is frustrated with her children's school after her 8-year-old autistic son was told not to bring his Bible to class anymore, and then her 6-year-old daughter's worksheet referenced alcohol. Her children attend Highview Elementary in Michigan.

She says her son, Jason, would take his Bible to school as his book of choice to read during free time. He was eventually told that book is "only for church, not school."

Cross says this was just the beginning of her frustration with this school. She says, for months, she's been disgusted with the way her special needs son has been treated.

"Putting my son in time outs for 13 hours a week and refusing him lunch, and just absurd things and just, if I did something like that I'd lose my kids!" says Cross. She has kept classroom logs and says she's gotten nowhere with the school officials since October.

"We've done meetings. We've met together, and whenever we all get in the same room together, then they just lie," she says.

But what her daughter, Jaclyn, asked her Wednesday while she was cooking dinner was the last straw for this mother.

She says her daughter asks, "'Mommy, why would a daddy drinking wine make a mommy happy?' And I dropped my spoon, I was like, 'What?'"

Her daughter's worksheet read, "My dad drinks wine. He puts a lime in his wine. It makes my mom smile."

When she voiced her concerns to the superintendent, she says the response was: "What would you like me to do about it? What can I do about it?"

FOX 2 spoke with the superintendent of Crestwood schools, Dr. Laurine VanValkenburg. She says she understands Cross's frustration and says, "If a child wants to bring a bible to school, they may."

As for that worksheet VanValkenburg apologized, adding that she has been unable to address the situation as she has been out of town. She says she will make sure both incidents are looked into when she returns.

Very sad story!! I hope she can find another school that will allow him to read his bible. Even good schools are hard to find these days.

Are you guys... like joking around?

Has the Mother even read the bible?

Let me give you a hint... do you think the Bible might reference alcohol??????????

I don't understand how she is outraged at the alcohol thing.... and then cool with the bible??

Maybe she should get her son to read the part about Lot's daughters getting him drunk and raping him???

I find that the school's stance on disallowing the child his bible was a terrible one. And, the way the school treated him was awful. I personally know of an instance where a friend's autistic son is often put in time outs because the staff isn't trained properly to handle his medical condition. We have to be tolerant.

And, regardless of what David_1 stated, a reference to Daddy's wine making Mommy happy in a 6 year old's workbook is outrageous. The school district should have their knuckles rapped for that one.

I find this outrageous and I hope the school changes it's stance on allowing the boy to have his bible at school. I am a teacher and I have always been told by our school lawyer that I cannot tell my students what to believe about the bible. But, if they choose to read the bible on their own or pray, that is their choice and it is allowed as long "as it does not disrupt the learning process".

It always makes my heart sing whenever I see a student reading their bible during their free time. I also love to see the students get together for group prayer in the morning before school starts. We have a "meet me at the pole" event where students can meet at the flagpole before school and pray together. This is student led, they do invite teachers to join in but, we are not leading the prayer or telling students they need to attend.

What we should be questioning is why the ACLU hasn't done anything about this.

Cases like this you gotta get the ACLJ (kind of a christian version of the ACLU). On rare occasions the ACLU will come up on the same side of the fight as the ACLJ, but it is rare.
