Obama's IRS is trying to more broadly define political activity in a blatant attempt to rob you of your free speech for the express purpose of silencing critics and retaining as much political power as possible. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) explains:

“What the administration is planning here is nothing less than declaring a war not just on its opponents, but on free speech itself,” McConnell said on the Senate floor Thursday. “The administration proposes to redefine political activity so broadly that grass-root groups all across the country that exist for the sole purpose of speaking out on issues of liberty or limited government or free enterprise or anything else that the administration doesn’t want to hear about will be forced to shut down … just in time by the way for the midterm elections.”

“They want those who disagree with them to sit down and shut up,” McConnell said.

McConnell called on the head of the IRS to stand up against the Obama administration’s “thuggery.”

"The new IRS commissioner has a simple choice: He can either restore the public’s trust in an agency whose reputation was already in doubt, or he can allow himself to be used as a political pawn by an administration that now seems willing to do anything to keep those it disagrees with from fully exercising their constitutionally protected right to free speech," McConnell said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) admitted this was what the Democrats are trying to do: protect their political position at the expense of American liberty.

The ACLU is already embroiled in the previous IRS scandal on the side of the conservative organizations and the ACLJ has filed formal objections to the IRS's new anti-free speech regulations.

IRS’s Lerner, Treasury Department secretly drafted new rules to restrict nonprofits:

Email: IRS, Treasury drafted rules to restrict nonprofits | The Daily Caller

The Obama administration’s Treasury Department and former IRS official Lois Lerner conspired to draft new 501(c)(4) regulations to restrict the activity of conservative groups in a way that would not be disclosed publicly, according to the House Committee on Ways and Means.

The Treasury Department and Lerner started devising the new rules “off-plan,” meaning that their plans would not be published on the public schedule. They planned the new rules in 2012, while the IRS targeting of conservative groups was in full swing, and not after the scandal broke in order to clarify regulations as the administration has suggested.

The rules place would place much more stringent controls on what would be considered political activity by the IRS, effectively limiting the standard practices of a wide array of non-profit groups.

Obama doubles down on using the IRS to undermine the liberty of all Americans.

how many of you honestly believe that Tea Party "nonprofits" are not politically motivated associations?

not one single 501c group had their nonprofit status revoked in 2012.

just try to remember you're hearing spin and propaganda from both sides of the aisle.

The proposed regulations go beyond IRS statutory authority. Under our Constitutional framework, at the least, the IRS needs Congressional authorization to impose such authoritarian requirements upon 501(c)(4) organizations effectively ending much of their free speech and even then it should ultimately be ruled unconstitutional if they ever got Congressional authorization to do this.

The IRS should be deferring to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on matters of political activity as they already have an extensive regulatory framework to make these evaluastions and an existing body of law to interpret that frame work.

The IRS cannot just wake up one day and say let's help the Democrats stay in power in the next election by passing a rule that says all the mostly conservative groups structured as 501(c)(4) organizations no longer have free speech.

But THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN CAUGHT SECRETLY TRYING TO DO!

The IRS has a long history of being used for political purposes, abusing taxpayers, and then brought to heel by Congress and the extent of this, by itself, is unique among federal agencies.

This may be the most egregious abuse of the Bill of Rights they have ever attempted.

This has zero to do with the 2012 IRS scandal in which they deliberately delayed the approval of conservative political organizations while simultaneously fast tracking the approval of liberal political organizations you mentioned.

This is MUCH MUCH worse. The IRS is not empowered by the Constitution to deprive organizations of their freedom of speech nor be able to biasedly choose who gets to have freedom of speech and who does not.

Governments can only do what the people allow them to. When we do our part and work together to stop them and punish them for engaging in unethical, immoral, and authoritarian/totalitarian behaviors; then that's what governments DON'T do.

Unfortunately when you try to highlight what governments are doing, you are labelled a conspiracy theorist by the apathetic.

True Drett. I suppose that goes with the territory. Evil always gets a boost from the apathetic.
