Plus-sized parking spaces for Chinese women drivers

A mall in China gives women wider, and pink parking spots.

Dalian (China) (AFP) - The parking spaces outside a Chinese shopping mall are distinctive: marked out in pink, signposted "Respectfully reserved for women", and around 30 centimetres wider than normal.
Unusually, though, the 10 spaces outside the main entrance were provided after women had trouble parking in the standard basement slots, managers said.
"I think this is very convenient," said user Yong Mei. "Other parking spaces are too narrow."
"It's not gender biased," she told AFP. "It's just that women have a few issues with vision when parking."

Who knew the visual acuity of all women was impaired? Dear China, if you are going to insult an entire gender, use strategy. Consider couching your absurd stereotypes in "concern". Bring up the term safety, place the parking spots in well lit areas close to the building.

Ironically, insurance companies in the usa have identified men as the ones who engage is risky driving practices such as speeding, not using seat belts and driving while under the influence of alcohol. But maybe the truth can be documented best in fatalities: More men than women die each year in motor vehicle crashes.

The mall managers deny the allegation. "We just wanted to make things easier for women, who make up most of our customers," said Yang Hongjun, a woman herself.

You should not only applaud them, you should go and shop there. They show a great amount of social concern. It would be an alternative to...

Perhaps it has nothing to do with 'visual acuity' (ta ta), but rather the width of Chinese women compared to their counterparts making exiting the vehicle in haste to go shopping much more difficult. :p

You know the average lawn produces about 50000 BTUs of cooling effect......I wonder how many BTU's of cooling effect has been replaced by black top that you can fry eggs on?

Hmm can't tell if this is sexist because it is essentially saying women are bad at parking or if it is sexist because they are giving women only preferential parking spaces and not men lol. I think we'll just let this one slide.

i don't mind my entire gender's driving ability insulted, since they're willing to paint the spots/lines in a pretty pink shade.

sounds like another great idea conceived by big, smart, insightful and benevolent men who know what is best for us -- considering our challenges and limitations are many.

by the way, all those housewives driving minivans probably have a better understanding and ability to use mirrors that the average sedan/subcompact driver.

this explains it. My less then 1% Chinese heritage is what causes my poor parking in perpendicular spaces. Now, if it's parallel or or slanted, I'm good to go.

Did you look at the width of those special Chinese parking spaces for women? They're not exactly wide. I don't think this should be seen as sexist, rather that it should seen as common sense that larger parking spaces are necessary for all people.

We should do this in the U.S- to all parking spaces. Because there's always that one person who parks in two or three spaces. Or the one person who parks a quarter inch away from your driver side door. Or the person who...

Yeah, people just stink at parking.

Yeah, people just stink at parking.

I remember a day when parking spaces tended to be 6 to 12 inches wider than they are today. Parking a full size truck in some parking lots these days is a bit tight, and once you're parked getting a door open far enough to squeeze out without dinging the car next to you is a near impossibility.
