I didn't see that there was a thread to just dump snippets and little excerpts of your favorite poems for quick sharing, so here we go! A friend of mine introduced me to this poem (this is just a part of it):

I have named you queen.
There are taller than you, taller.
There are purer than you, purer.
There are lovelier than you, lovelier.
But you are the queen.
- Pablo Neruda

While sitting on the bus bench,
wondering where everyone was going in such a hurry,
I stuck out my foot to trip a few cars.

I'm sitting here all alone
and I'm bored to no end
I wish I was two dogs
Then we could play together

translated, it's from a Dutch comedian

This one was from a hymn I read from my most recent book:

Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night.
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
I woke — the dungeon flamed with light!
My chains fell off, my heart was free
I rose, went forth and followed thee

It's hard to beat old hymns. I have a hard time getting into a lot of contemporary Christian music because so much of it is redundant and just doesn't have the substance the old hymns do.

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole
,Though stretched from sky to sky.

I was sent into the world to find my ken
I bent my back, I skinned my knees
the flowers and bees blessed my mind
God touched my heart without a human word....

Yes I totally agree! Like the same chord progression for chris tomlin (key of D) and matt redman (he uses the key of B and b minor way too much and even he admits it lol) and the same topics of grace and mercy.....yea they're nice but there's more to Christianity then songs just describing God (how great is our God, etc)....like the old hymns tell of salvation, of the obstacles in the Christian walk throughout life...i guess it's just not cool anymore/doesn't sell on the charts to talk about this in Christian music anymore....truly sad...but those hymns are such food for the soul!

a little long, but I couldn't resist...one of my favorite Hymns...

"A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth" by Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676

1. A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth,
The guilt of all men bearing;
And laden with the sins of earth,
None else the burden sharing!
Goes patient on, grow weak and faint,
To slaughter led without complaint,
That spotless life to offer;
Bears shame and stripes, and wounds and death,
Anguish and mockery, and saith,
"Willing all this I suffer."

2. This Lamb is Christ, the soul's great Friend,
The Lamb of God, our Savior;
Him God the Father chose to send
To gain for us His favor.
"Go forth, My Son," the Father saith,
"And free men from the fear of death,
From guilt and condemnation.
The wrath and stripes are hard to bear,
But by Thy Passion men shall share
The fruit of Thy salvation."

3. "Yea, Father, yea, most willingly
I'll bear what Thou commandest;
My will conforms to Thy decree,
I do what Thou demandest."
O wondrous Love, what hast Thou done!
The Father offers up His Son!
The Son, content, descendeth!
O Love, how strong Thou art to save!
Thou beddest Him within the grave
Whose word the mountains rendeth.

4. From morn till eve my theme shall be
Thy mercy's wondrous measure;
To sacrifice myself for Thee
Shall be my aim and pleasure.
My stream of life shall ever be
A current flowing ceaselessly,
Thy constant praise outpouring.
I'll treasure in my memory,
O Lord, all Thou hast done for me,
Thy gracious love adoring.

5. Of death I am no more afraid,
New life from Thee is flowing;
Thy cross affords me cooling shade
When noonday's sun is glowing.
When by my grief I am opprest,
On Thee my weary soul shall rest
Serenely as on pillows.
Thou art my Anchor when by woe
My bark is driven to and fro
On trouble's surging billows.

6. And when Thy glory I shall see
And taste Thy kingdom's pleasure,
Thy blood my royal robe shall be,
My joy beyond all measure.
When I appear before Thy throne,
Thy righteousness shall be my crown,-
With these I need not hide me.
And there, in garments richly wrought
As Thine own bride, I shall be brought
To stand in joy beside Thee.

Here's a poem I wrote back when I was going through a really hard time in my life. It's helped me a lot to be able to express myself in this way. Enjoy!!

Stand Up
By Me

Tiptoe past the fears, tiptoe past the tears
Stand up, stand up if you're sick of being pushed.
Stand up, stand up if you're ready to live.
It takes strength. It takes faith.
Stand up, stand up. Show them your strength.
Show them you're here to stay.
Walk past the hurt. Walk past the regret.
Tear the pains in half.
Stand up, stand up!

Exactly! Just going to be honest... you don't really get much Gospel or practical help from the newer songs. I mean, some of them are really good for worshiping to and have a helpful, positive message, but with an awful lot of them (not all of them) if I were an unbeliever who started listening to Christian music, I don't think I would get enough Gospel for it to make an impact. Or even as a Christian, practical help from them... the old hymns are so much soul-searching.

(These old hymns are definitely worth discussing! :eek: )
It Is Well makes me weep like a baby. I don't know if you've ever read some of the stories behind these hymns, but a lot of them were written in immense heartache. It Is Well was written by Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. Spafford's 2 year old son died, he was ruined financially in the Chicago fire, and all four of his daughters were killed in a Europe-bound shipwreck in the Atlantic 2 years later. He wrote the words to It Is Well as he crossed the Atlantic near the place where the shipwreck had happened, just as went to go meet his wife in Europe who had survived the shipwreck.

Dedicato a chi aspetta una speranza

davanti ad un dolore
nel freddo di una stanza

Dedicated to those that wait for hope

In front of a pain
in the cold of a room

This is an entire poem, but it's short. One of my favorites of all time:

Stevie Smith- Not Waving But Drowning

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.
