“"Whose child are you, young man?"” she says
I give my name; she asks again, she’s tired
“"Yes, but whose son are you?"” Her aged face a map
Etched on it the wrinkled journey lines of pain and joy perhaps?
I grunt and give my father’s name this time
A light flickers in her soft but weary brown eyes
“I see, Is he the one who nearly died?”
“No maam, he’s dead for twenty years” I sigh.

I know the question crossed my mind before
Of why I had to stand at someone’s door
She cannot let me in until she sees
The root and structure of our family tree
It matters not that winters breeze gets colder
Her focus is behind and beyond my shoulder
For there lie the souls of generations past
But they’ are gone now their mould has long been cast
Yet at her door I stand right now in space and time
Alive and slowly carving out a legacy that’s mine

So who am I really?
Am I just the offspring of someone’s offspring?
A grand-parents song that my life has to sing?
Am I the extension of a father long departed?
Or the one with the smile his dear mother imparted?
Am I not more than the one they produced?
Much more today than some ancestors fruit?
For even the fruit we know one day must fall
Thus seeding its own tree and heeding life’s call
But here I stand her daughters heart to win
If only her dear mom would just let me in!
