Without being painfully aware of our frailty and mortality
Life seemingly loses its shine and is somewhat shallow
Without ever knowing the hard lessons of defeat and failure
Our victories and triumphs are somewhat hollow
How do we learn to cherish the ones we hold close to our heart
If we have never had those hearts torn by the loss of someone dear
How can we really embrace the depth and passion of loving
For within its bitter-sweetness lie the ghosts of heartache, betrayal, our fears
We cannot hope to drink of loves honey-like sweetness
If we won’t risk being stung by its sometimes heart-rending song
And if we never confront the dark shadows of our own weakness
Then how will our character and hope become strong?
