I am probably older in spirit than you are. People don’t just “grow up” and get over losing love. I am not a child with a crush or puppy love. If you think my feelings are those of a child, you are very much mistaken.

I will love him forever, not a long, long time. No one understands. It is alright. I know one day I will be dead and loneliness will be over. It is my cross to bear in this life.

I think the worst part of it all is that you do not believe I love you. You think it is a crush, puppy love, a fantasy, a delusion, etc. I suppose it is my fault. I did not make you feel my love for you.

It’s from the musical, Showboat. The character was biracial and married to a whote man. In the film, she was played by Ava Gardner rather than Lena Horne because Hollywood thought casting a black actress was too controversial. It is a shame, as I believe Horne originated the role on Broadway. But I don’t know for sure, I need to look it up.
