I am posting this here because I know I can get some good advice on this. So please pardon me if it is not the appropriate forum to post in.

My friend wants to lose some weight. Somebody recommended WOW's Green Coffee Bean extract to her. It's not easily available in India, so she will have to buy it through a health website. Before she bought it, she wanted to know if there were any side-effects to it and if it was really effective.

Can you guys advice me on this? It doesn't matter if you have used it or not, if you have some advice to share (with some links to back it up), please do. I told her I will let her know if it was safe to use, by tomorrow.

Thank you in advance. :)

Beats me about the green coffee bean extract all I know is that caffeine in general helps you lose weight because it gets you moving and you don't eat as much at least that's what I've observed and I know a lot of diet pills are really just caffeine and B vitamins and I sure do know caffeine because the dark chocolate I like has a lot of caffeine in it so you can bet I've had experience with caffeine and I can tell you it's great but I'm fairly certain the only benefit of green coffee bean extract is the caffeine but that's cool to because caffeine is great...

Coffee, fen-fen, meth... the basic idea behind using these for weight loss is consuming a stimulant. While I recognize that there are those that will not concur, I am of the opinion that healthy weight loss does not include any kind of specific weight loss product, diet, or cleanse, but rather merely balancing activity with what you eat.

The side effect of many weight loss regiments (including many cleanses, certain juice diets, and some homeopathic options, not just the Obviously bad options...) is that the dieter is effectively starving themself. This can have long term health effects, alter brain function, and (the one that gets people's attention) cause weight gain.

The safest way to increase metabolism is typically to simply Move More. Combine that with scaling back portion size on what you eat and making reasonable food choices, and (ahem) learning to be comfortable in the skin you are in by making your focus not be a particular weight or size, but rather the goal of health and wellness. That, my friend, seems like a formula for success to me.

No no no NO! You'll never get anyone to follow that way. Telling them to eat right and exercise is a sucker's game. What gets their attention is "Take this pill and keep living the way you want and eating what you want and the pounds will magically melt away."

Remember, what works is irrelevant. What they want to hear is what will sell.

You're right... that's the same kind of madness that makes people think a religion based on love, grace and forgiveness might be the one true path to a positive outcome in the afterlife. <Grins, prepares the bottles of "patent medicine for the next Medicine Show & Tent Revival.> C'mon, Lynx. The next town down the road hasn't heard of us yet. This time you can be the healer and I can walk again.

lolz.

I read that taking green coffee bean supplements can cause bad headaches that sometimes don't go away for days. It's probably similar to caffeine's side effects, except GCB is probably stronger.

Well... it IS based on love, grace and forgiveness. Some religions just leave out the part about a personal relationship with God, and it causing you to choose to live a better way.

Now what labels are we putting on this snake oil? We're out of "Pain killer" labels, but we have plenty of "Shake the shakes" chill cure labels still. And we're headed toward winter, it should sell. :D

But yeah - "feel good" religion, snake oil and diets (diet pills and fad diets both) do have an awful lot in common. Mostly the placebo effect.

I'm a little more worried about what would happen when she stopped taking it. I know that some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others, but when I quit drinking coffee, I got wicked withdrawal symptoms (including horrible headaches) and I threw up until there was absolutely no sense in it. I was only expecting the headaches, lol.

And if she doesn't alter her eating habits, won't she just gradually go back to her old weight when she stops taking the GCE? I'm not sure that it will do any harm, but I'm not convinced that it will be of any real long-term help, either. However I do not have personal experience with GCE or any other weight-loss supplement.

I experience the same symptoms when I cut back on my caffeine.

Howzabout them labeles we used in pawtucket? The ones that say it'll cure everything from rhumatisim to rabies?

I imagine that it would be possible to OD on the caffeine in that coffee extract. (btw, the caffeine in soda pop and many energy drinks, diet pill, etc comes from the "decaffeinating" process from making decaf coffee. They remove it and then sell it to the other "food" producers.) Think about that many stores LIMIT the sale on energy drinks to so many per person per day. An uninformed consumer could put themself into a bad state with that GCE.

You know you can buy pure caffeine? A teaspoon is roughly the equivalent of 12 cups of regular (like the kind you get at McDonald's) coffee.

Coffee, fen-fen, meth...
I just love that you put methamphetamines on the same level as coffee. Seriously, this is the best thing I've read all day. ^_^

Right? Somewhere in the northwest US, there's an audible crunching sound happening. Gypsy perks up - "The Hippie Signal! To the Crunch Cave!"

I agree with Pop, and I would definitely ask a doctor about such supplements before taking them. Caffeine is not as safe as some people would think, especially for those who are sensitive to it.

Years ago I took that stupid Hydroxy Cut before there were all the warnings (and lawsuits). I am very sensitive to caffeine but since it's over-the-counter, I thought, hey, if I take half the dose in twice the amount of time recommended, I'll be ok. (I never claimed to be the brightest bulb in the bunch.)

Not only did I not lose any weight, but like Pop, I became jittery and uber-sick and it wasn't a pretty sight. I would imagine some of the feelings I was having were similar to the onset of a heart attack. I also have high blood pressure, which is definitely not a healthy combination with caffeine. (I had a co-worker once who had to be taken to the emergency room because he had chugged multiple energy drinks in a row and his blood pressure was through the roof.)

Just because you can buy it anywhere doesn't mean caffeine is safe, especially for some people. Please check with a doctor first!

Yeah, Palpatine had it shut down right after he closed the senate on Corsucant.
