My dog and I love to run together, but I get shin splints nearly every time I go out. :( This is a recent development. Not sure what is causing it to suddenly start happening.
I'm no physiotherapist so I could be wrong. I have suffered from shin splints before. Here are some probable reasons -
1. Do you warm up enough? Do you spend enough time stretching your calf muscles?
2. Have you recently changed your running shoes? Some shoes don't have enough of padding at the sole to absorb the shock from your heels.

Same old shoes I've always worn to jog. But stretching more might help.

Yes. Maybe the change in weather means you need more time lumbering up.

The other (but remote reason) could be that you changed your style of running. Ask your dog, he may have noticed it if you did.

Ha! I'll ask him. He may not have noticed because he's too busy trying to run right in front of me. :p

Grace, has your running surface changed? I've noticed that when I run on pavement, I have more issues than if I run on an actual track or on my property. Another thing to check is the flexibility of the sole of your running shoe. In order to prevent injuries, I was told to wear a running shoe that did not bend easily. Alternating from running to cycling helps me a lot too. I have not been running with my dog lately because my knees are pretty angry. As we ladies get older, we need to take calcium intake into account as well.

My favorite workout habits include dance, cycling and a military fitness program that includes squats, crunches and upper body workouts. There is a site for women called Hardbodies that I really like. Very helpful and encouraging.

Great thread btw! :D We tried something like this some time back, but it fizzled. :) Hope this one does far better!

To train my shoulders, I carry around the burdens of each day.

To train my arms, I pick up my hopes and dreams and put them back down after they die.

And to train my legs, I continually run after lofty ideals that I will never catch up to.

Okay, that was way too depressing.

Let me spice things up a bit with my "Euro Training". Here is Terry Crews demonstrating the "Euro" workout I do.

Descyple, is this workout the secret of your muscles?

Man, I need to search for a trainer who is good at this.

Hey Roh Chris, you can hire me to be your trainer, and all you have to do is pay me with chocolate bars (and I don't mean none of those nasty "workout energy chocolate bars", I'm want Snickers, Mars, and basically anything made from Hershey's).

"No Cocoa Beans, No Gain" - that's my motto!!!

We got a deal???

P.S. I also get to eat the chocolate bars while I'm training you, and if I get carried away and subsumed by the chocolate bars (which often happens), then you are on your own for the rest of the workout!!!

Awesome mate. You can be my trainer. I don't mind you eating them bars as long as you train me well.

Anyway, let's get started. Here is your first advance payment of bars. Hope you enjoy eating them.

I'm currently doing a cardio/strength training mix that includes the rowing machine, weight machines, and free weights. I do a mix of arms/legs/chest/back each time, but focus on arms or legs alternately. Today was arms. I have three routines that I rotate through 2-3 times a week. I was doing Hiit training for a long time, but that recently fell through and I haven't been able to work it back in due to scheduling conflicts.

One of the questions I wanted to ask was about calorie burns. My gym has a smart key that keeps track of my routine and tracks calories based on everything I've done, the amount of weights used, reps, sets, etc in conjunction with my weight/height. Today's burn according to their system was 512 calories for about an hour at the gym. (15 minutes of heavy rowing, then weights.) That seems high to me. I'm wondering how accurate their system might be. I'm counting calories too, and I don't want to mess up and overeat because I didn't burn as much as I thought I did. Could they be counting the slow burn that happens over time? How are calories even counted with strength and weight training?
I'm not sure if anyone has replied to you or not yet, Grace, but I feel like it's hard to say. I would maybe look it up on another site or calorie-counting tool like MyFitnessPal just to double-check it.

I guess this is as good a place/time to share this as any, but weight issues have been a huge struggle for me for most of my life, and I have been very self-aware and self-conscious of my weight ever since I was little. It's caused a lot of self-esteem issues for me, but those have been easier to ignore I guess in the times of my life when I've been more fit. I was around 300lbs for most of high school, and then my freshman year of college I had a lot of extra time on my hands and went to a super healthy university, and my weight dropped to 255. I did take care of myself but wasn't super into counting calories or anything at the time.
Starting my junior year, I had less free time and I also had chosen to transfer at that point and took a semester off to work. No more campus food, more money, and a car started to mean eating out more for me. Then I transferred to a university that wasn't as healthy. The campus food was terrible and they didn't have much for exercise facilities, and paired with my silly lack of self-care and discipline, it resulted in me eating out frequently while pretty much never exercising at all. This trend continued on into my post-college years, and for the past year or two, my weight plateaued, but that was only after some really significant weight gain (I'm embarrassed to share the number, honestly).

About a month ago, I had it. I was sick of this being a problem, and I was sick of not being able to do anything about it, and by God's grace I was able to get into a simple routine that I have stuck with since. I use MyFitnessPal, count calories, stick to a calorie limit, drink a ton of water, avoid soda, and exercise almost every day. My exercise has involved walking, lifting weights, and playing basketball once a week, but I'm hoping to move from just walking to a little bit of running mixed with mostly walking. I've seen good results so far. I had a little bit of weight loss the first couple of weeks, and then the weight loss was really significant last week (like 14lbs or so). This week it has fluctuated like crazy (even though I do weigh myself at around the same time every day--right after I wake up), so it's hard to tell where my progress is at, but I know that it is going to slow down considerably, and that it is going to take a couple of years at least to get down to where I want to be. I also plan for this to be a lifelong set of habits, so hopefully as I continue to live those out, I will see positive results.
I have had so much encouragement and support from friends and family, but I think the hardest thing about it has been continuing to go on with this while feeling alone. I've recently gone through a phase of feeling loneliness more than I typically do, and I know it'll eventually pass, but it does make this a little bit harder.

I wonder how far the Blond swims in an hour? I just keep swimming back and forth across the pool....kind of like a mouse on a wheel. Maybe I should go to the Gulf of Mexico and swim for an hour and see where I end up. That would be an interesting experiment.

Yes, I have been letting tourist know and promised him I would swim parallel with the beach and not out into open water as I don't want him to worry about me getting caught in currents and not able to get back....I know I have my Blond moments but sometimes I do things right.......lol

ChandlerFan, thank you for sharing this. I love that you've found something that works for you, and plan to make it a lifestyle change. That's what I've done as well. This is the first time I've ever tried calorie counting, and I'm thrilled to see that it's actually working! I've been exercising regularly for several years now, but I'd gotten to a point where my body weight just wasn't going to go down any more without adjusting my food intake. (The one thing I was terrible about doing.)

I'm so glad your friends and family are an encouragement to you. I wish I had an answer for the loneliness. :( Praying for you now in that regard. *hugs*

Yea, that sounds right to me. When I used to run 3 miles a day I would burn 450-500 calories and it would take me about 40 minutes. I'm well over 200lbs so someone lighter would burn a little less calories, but 500 doesn't sound unreasaonable for 60 minutes in the gym.
