I read S4T's thread about comfort food and was feeling tonight wiry about stuff in the news. Ever so often I hear something that I feel begins to darken my soul, before I go to that despairing place of feeling that the world is hopeless. There is so much evil. Before all that, I go to my 'go to' place, which assures me of truths in this world. I feel drawn to it. Like I thirst for that truth in the moment.

I want to know what is your 'go to' place? If it's scripture- which verse? Quotes from books? Friends? Pets? Excerise? Others?

S4T- not meaning to tread on your topic of comfort stuff. Hope this is OK

In case it wasn't obvious I was meaning something healthy, not destructive.

I 'go to' sleep.

Seriously though... if its about evil in the world (and I know there's plenty of it), I just remind myself that that sort of evil has always existed in the world (and its true) and the only difference is that now I've been made aware of it. Every time I think I've seen it all, something even more horrific comes along and blows my mind and I have seen images and read about stuff that would probably make the toughest of men weep or at least be deeply disturbed.

Just remember that the scripture says that man will become very evil, selfish and ungodly, especially in the last days (see 2 Timothy 3). It never mentions in detail what was going on in the days of Noah but I think the world will be even worse before the return of Christ. When Noah was around, the devil still had plenty of time to play on earth.. when Jesus comes, his play time ends.

South Africa is one of most dangerous countries to life in without a war. Normally when myself or my wife gets negative about all the sad issues and crimes we have in South Africa, we just think about people in our country that have it far worse than us. In our neighboring countries like Zimbabwe you have farmers getting kicked of their land which they purchased and build up from scratch. People’s businesses are confiscated by the government because Robert Mugabe is as mad as a hare.

Yes times are tough but we are grateful for Abba’s blessing in our lives. A kid that is beautiful and perfect in every way. Jobs in a country with a jobless rate of over 40% and then the best wife (in my eyes LOL) a man can pray for.

I try to focus on the good instead of the bad :)

I love Psalm 91 as it speaks of a ton of destruction, but that it will not happen to the righteous, but the comforting part of it is being under God's wing, that seems to be a close connection to God for me and a very comforting thought that He would take us and put us under His protective wing.

Don't get me wrong I know that very bad things happen to good people, however, Psalm 91 is a chapter of comfort to me and I love reading it over and over. It was my devotional reading on the morning of 9/11 the day the planes took the towers down and as my heart was breaking and so filled with sad emotions for all those that lost their lives that day I was so comforted by the devotional reading I had had that morning.

When I've had a bad day or things just aren't going well, i usually get subway, go home and watch a documentary, or a sci fi movie. It's usually very effective in helping me feel better. You can't be worried about your own problems when an alien is sucking someones brain out through their nose.

I have often had my Bible fall open to the very scripture I need at the moment.

Other times I feel better when I have a knitting or crochet project.

On September 11th 2001, I was at work when all of things that went on that day were going down. I remember the first person I called was my Mom and I was almost inconsolable that morning, my Mom said, Jen I know this is bad, really bad but we can't forget God is in control. I felt OK then, well I calmed down. I remember what she said though when something causes me to feel upset, God is in control, God is in control.

Scripture, prayer, music, sometimes speaking to others...but I'm always swept up in my inner world. It's vast, powerful, and holds a plethora of variety. Not to mention, it's infeasibly hard to escape.

From a music nerd such as myself, do you expect any answer except music? It's my shield against all the negativity at work, and it is equally effective against all the negativity I can generate of my own.

I also have these "vent out" sessions with God every once in a while. I write a letter and then read it out to God. I then pray for a few minutes over it.

I close myself in with music. Put on my favourite worship songs and I'm all at peace singing about them.

Otherwise, I just grab my favourite tuna sub, go home and watch an episode of 'Air Crash Investigation'. My troubles are insignificant when 100 people are praying for their dear lives 30,000 feet above the ground.
