I'm not going to post this in Bible Discussion. Just too much....umm...it's just a bad idea.

Luke 19:3-10
Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly. When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

It's beautiful because Jesus saw Zaccheus, probably the most hated man in that area, and said, "You know what? I don't care who you are, what you've done, or how hated you are. I'm going to your house, and I will accept you JUST as you are."

It's also sad because in this passage, we see a person trying to receive the Gospel. And you know who's in the way? The crowd. Probably people who claimed to love Jesus and follow his teachings. All I can say is, good thing Zaccheus didn't give up on Jesus because His followers weren't being so kind. The thing is, though, times haven't changed. We didn't learn and still haven't learned from this story.

There are people today that are greatly hated but need to hear the Gospel, regardless of who they are or what they did. And even if they're able to find Jesus, even after Jesus has accepted them and says, "Yes, salvation is yours!" we're STILL in the way. We're still saying to each other, "What is that person doing here? All they do is cause drama!" And you know, maybe they do. But we can pray for that person instead of making one huge fight about it.

I'm not excluding myself from this group. Too many times have I stood in someone's way. I read this passage and all I can think is, may I never again be the one standing in the way of someone trying to receive the Gospel. May they see the TRUE Gospel, and may I never again look at someone and think they're too far gone and can't be redeemed or they're not deserving enough for Jesus. The only time it's too late for a person is when they're dead.

P.S. This was not sprung up by anything that occurred on here, I promise. This was not made out of anger, more like out of my own conviction. And now that I'm thinking about it, this forum has really been kinda peaceful as far as trolls and debates go. Keep up the good work on that. :) Y'all are great!!

This thread is purely just something that was just laid upon my heart today. Not just for CC, but for my life. I've really been feeling like I've been too...something towards people. Maybe cynical. Anyways. The story of Zaccheus popped into my brain. I read it and thought, wow, why didn't I see this before when I read it? Probably because of all the cutsie Sunday school teachings I've heard over the years. Nothing wrong with Sunday school, it's just when you're practically born under a pew and you hear something over and over again the same way, it can kind of be challenging to view it from a different perspective. :) And I thought you know, maybe you'd find it interesting to read my new thoughts on this passage.

I know the feeling. I just can't stand when I feel people start stuff just because they can, it ticks me off when people do contradictory things, and I feel bad for letting them carry on because it's feels I'm saying: "Go on, belittle us. You're right, correct us for our lack of understanding. Yes you know the truth most of all!"

I know you can't understand the heart of another person, but just by studying their word usage you can tell a lot about the intentions they have. I'm not trying to brag, but I have a tendency to tell how a person is just by studying their words, so when I snap, it's because I feel that I've detected ill or misplaced intention. I'm not saying I'm always right, and I know my temper is something I need to work on. I'm just not all that used to not striking back.

It is hard. And I'm definitely not saying to be a doormat. And if someone is harassing you, take care of it. But pray for them, too. Because as I said, they do need Jesus. And the drama starting thing was just an example. Though it is very prevalent in today's society.

Love it. Thank you for shedding that light. Sometimes we approach subjects where we may think it's being right but we'll never know how another takes it and may have missed their long shot chance and never look in the same direction again because subconsciously we were their stumbling block or huge wall to see this.

One interesting thing about this incident is where Jesus says "Zaccheus get down here, we got some stuff to straighten out in your life" and Zaccheus... wait, that's not how it went.

I John 5:3 - For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Jesus didn't call Zaccheus down to straighten him out. Jesus called him down to have lunch with someone who was going out of his way to see Jesus. And Zaccheus didn't give half his goods to the poor and refund four times what he had cheated people out of because Jesus laid down a list of rules. Zaccheus loved Jesus, and because of this he started cleaning up some things he knew weren't right in his life.

There's an old saying, "It's easy to live for God hard, but it's hard to live for God easy." For one who loves God, following His laws is no big thing - it comes naturally, a result of association with God. We don't live right because "Well that's what we have to do if we want to get into Heaven." We live right because we love God and we know this is what He wants, so we naturally want to do what will please Him.

You know who has the hardest life? It's not the christian or the sinner - it's the one who wants to be a christian, but still get as close to the world as he can and still be "okay." The sinner has an easier life because he knows he's a sinner and he's happy with it. The christian has a much easier life because he trusts God. And like Zaccheus, the christian just naturally does what is right because that is the only way that really makes sense. The christian has found something better than the world, and it's only logical to follow what he knows is best.

That's why Jesus told Zaccheus to come down and go have lunch with him. Not because Zaccheus was a sinner who needed to be corrected, but because Jesus knew Zaccheus was looking for something better, and Jesus had it to give.

Freely you have received... freely give.

This is a good post, too. Btw. Is the thing I have in bold just something you're adding to the post, or did it feel like I implied something in this post I didn't intend to imply? I mean, I agree completely with everything you said. It's just because I can't interpret everything you typed out clearly (believe me it's me, not you. lol). x.X

This post is kind of only a half-reply to this. Not everything in it is gonna pertain to your post. There's some new things that I also have been thinking about.

Since Jesus isn't physically here anymore (though He lives inside us), it's now our job to present the love of Jesus and show them that Jesus wants to show them love, too. Show people that JUST like Jesus, we accept and love them, too.

Once they experience the love of Jesus, not the do's and don't's of Jesus, we obey Him not because we simply have to, but they WANT to. The do's and don't's don't end up mattering as much. We know that Jesus has our very best interest in mind, and has a much more fulfilling plan for our life than our own plans. And once we see that, we not only follow the do's and don't's, but a desire to go above and beyond for the sake of Christ wells within us. Sure, it isn't EASY, but no good things in this life come easy to us. The greatest reward comes at the greatest price. But it's not something that's like some great burden (for His burden is light :) ).

Everyone is looking for something better and more fulfilling. Why do you think materialism is so prevalent? Because on our own, we're empty. Completely empty. Their wells have run dry. Which is why we gotta get out there and show them the fulfillment we have from the living water, the well that WON'T run dry, and will leave them/us satisfied. :)

Also, ouch. That's enough deep thinking for the day. My head hurts. No, really. I think after dinner I'm gonna drink some peppermint tea and do umm...no thinking required stuff. :p

Play some Gungirl 2. Freeware video game. No thinking required, just shoot zombies.

And yes, that part you highlighted (highlit? well, put in bold anyway) is an integral part of the thought I was typing. It referred back to the initial premise in the third paragraph.
