When I was a child, and my brother a toddler
He would often come up and take things that were mine
And oh how I would yell and snatch them back
Because they were MINE, and that wasn't fair
When I was a child, Mom would serve breakfast
And each child would eye his bowl, and all the others
To make sure he got as much as his siblings
If his seemed lower than the rest, oh how he would complain
No peace could be had until Mom evened the bowls up
Because getting less than his brother was unfair
When I was a child in school, we would stand in line
To go to recess, lunch, or wait for the bus
And every kid watched every other kid
To make sure nobody cut line
If someone did cut line, oh the outrage
Because that's not fair
When I was older, in middle school, we would take a test
Some would try to cheat, some would try to catch the cheaters
If someone was caught cheating, oh how they complained
Because that's not fair
When I was in high school, couples started forming
And often a girl would steal another girl's guy
Or a guy would steal another guy's girl
And oh, how the person left alone would bitterly protest
And talk about the one who left him or her, and the one he or she left with
Such righteous indignation you have never seen before
Because hey man, that's not fair
When on my first job, at a fast food factory
Employees would come and employees would go
Sometimes one would be hired later than another
But advance far faster than the one hired first
And oh, how the neglected person complained
How dare they make HIM a manager
When I was here first
That's just not fair
When your life depends on you, you must be vigilant
To make sure you get what you deserve
All through life we guard what is ours
And make sure we are getting as much as everyone else
If I get less than you, that's not fair
But when I walk with God, fair doesn't matter
God promised I will have what I need
God promised to provide, protect, guide and love me
........... But what have I done for him?
Man, that's not fair
I have been cheated in my life
I was cheated out of insurance money in a car accident
Because the other guy lied to his insurance company
I was fired from a job for a trumped-up reason
Because they didn't need me anymore
I have been lied to and lied about
And that's not fair
But God protects me, and I have all I need
God asks so little of me, and gives so much
The unfairness of life doesn't matter
Because God works all things for good
People lie, cheat, steal and gossip
Trying to get what is theirs, whatever the cost
Even if it takes away from others
They lie awake at night, tossing and turning
Over something that was unfair
But with God, I don't have to worry about what is fair
Only about what is right
The only true unfairness is between God and me
And that is unfair in my favor
God is so unfair
Because He loves me
He would often come up and take things that were mine
And oh how I would yell and snatch them back
Because they were MINE, and that wasn't fair
