I would rather have Music in Church.
People raise more of a stink in that thread than they do in this one.

And besides, this would never be allowed in the Music in Church thread. No playing instruments, even the woodwinds.

The rule in my house is if you have to fart, you have to fart in the bathroom. If there is something you can do, then do it, but I understand people can't help it if they have to fart or burp.

The rule is that the person who notices it first is the guilty party....

Just home from service, and i was not amused...why do people feel its acceptable to fart mid-service...i understand its natural body movement, but its discomforting and gag-inducing and distracting.... Can people either... 1. Hold it in or 2. Leave the room :/ my nose and stomach cannot cope with the nastiness ><

I'm not sure how big your church is, but can you sit in a different area from the guilty gas passer?

Obviously this is a violation of a core belief you hold....."a person shouldn't fart in church". Since that is out of your control what are your options?

Well they can fart outside the main hall :p...just mid-service if people are evacuating that spot while the minister is sharing...that will cause a public spectacle and shame on the person. I just think if you feel really gassy, either sit somewhere isolated, warn people or leave the room to let it pass. Regardless of it being a natural occurence, i still do not think its mannerable or polite to let one go when around people :p

Carry a bottle of non-aerosol air freshener with you to church next time. As soon as the flatulently-challenged party expels the disagreeable odor, aim and spray a fine mist. Then apply a clothespin to your nose and offer additional clothespins to the other parishioners. heehee I'm absolutely joking, my friend.

Seriously though, if it's somebody you are certain knows better and is just being discourteous, tell them in confidence and with grace how it bothers you terribly.

This reminds me of an elderly lady who used to sit in the back of our church years ago because she had a problem with flatulence. She was always joyful, always sang to the Lord with her whole heart, was sweet and kind to everyone, but nobody ever sat next to her because of the foul odor.

I was one who wouldn't sit near her because the smell was extremely terrible. But I finally realized my attitude stunk worse than her bodily aroma and I chose to sit next to her. How happy she was that I did! Of course, there was no denying the air around her was enough to make your hair stand on end, but the joy on her face and her sweet graciousness toward me made me get over myself. I can't stand the thought of myself every time I remember how I avoided her. I'm so grateful to the Lord for making me be nice to her. She didn't live very long after that.

Maybe they could order gas masks and charge them to the gas passer....?

I notice a lot of smells that I choose to ignore: old people smells, powder covering up various body odors that really should have been dealt with by shower or bath, bad breath, B.O. that they didn't even try to cover up. I do better at ignoring some than others.

From where I am at the piano or keyboard, I can smell flowers if they have them that day, and at the end of the service, I smell the candles right after they have been extinguished. I like those smells. :)

What about the way wood smells inside churches?

I rather like it when there´s not wet paint.

Everybody farts....everybody.

Yes, of course, if we didn't we might explode. It's just if he knew of one particular person who farts like crazy, maybe he could find another area to sit. Not that he has to be rude to the person but just sit somewhere else.

Hahaha, this is a problem for me as well. Not just farts but people burping too. India is not exactly known for its etiquette, so I understand why it is so. :)

Could you sit in a different place? I know that Body Odour of any kind is very annoying but there's little we can do about people who smell like that other than avoiding them. :(

I'm just going to say this, but if that's the worst thing that happens in your church, stop complaining. You can't tell about someone's health condition just by looking at them. Also, some people are not always aware of when they were going to let them out, such as my brother. So yeah, while fart smells can be uncomfortable to be around, I could think of worse things, such as strong perfume, or other stuff.

SARCASM ALERT SARCASM ALERT

Dear Lord,

Please keep all the stinky, dirty, messed up people out of my church so I can have my comfortable little Sunday morning service and not be bothered. Thanks.

PS. Why don't you ever give me opportunities to serve you?
I was starting to think the same thing, but not sarcastically.
