On this rare occasion I am feeling the need to indulge my ooey gooey side, I am throwing out this Valentine's Day themed question.

What is the most romantic gesture you have ever had done or have had done for you? I understand many may not be in relationship right now, but I dare to venture a guess that at one point in life we have all celebrated at least one Valentine's Day or experienced a romantic gesture.

So lets hear your schmaltziest, diabetes inducing moment if you are so bold.

And just to show that I am brave enough to play my own game:

One year I covered a gf's floor with 5 giant bags worth of Hershey Kisses and left her a note that said that I kissed the ground that she walked on.

So, what is the most romantic gesture you have ever had done or have had done for you?

I love this logic.......making a huge mess for someone to clean up is romantic. :p

**dumps the trash can in the middle of the living room to test the theory ;)

In the summer of 2010, I met a girl that I grew to really like a lot. We were both staff at a four-day Christian leadership retreat for college students. Instead of automatically being placed with students from our own campus, we actually had to sign up to be with a specific group of students. Naturally I signed up to be with students from my campus, but this girl and a ministry staff woman from her university both signed up to lead the group with me. Because the staff woman was a new mother and had a baby to tend to oftentimes, she kind of stepped back and let this girl and I take the reins of leading the group. For whatever reason, it just seemed like she and I clicked instantly and it felt like we had known each other for a long time after just those four days. We only lived 45 minutes apart, so we kept in contact through text, talked on the phone every now and then, and hung out a few times. I asked her to be my date to a wedding later in the summer, and she excitedly agreed. I went away to a Bible camp to be a counselor for 7 weeks and we kept in touch through a weekly phone call and we wrote back and forth a couple times. When I returned home from camp, it came up that her brother was going to be in town and her family was going to a baseball game. She had already committed to going to the wedding with me, though, and she was going to do that. I ended up calling her and telling her that this time with family seemed like something really valuable to her and that if she wanted to go with them, I would be completely okay with her not going to the wedding with me, especially because she wouldn't have known anyone there anyway. She accepted my offer, and we decided instead to hang out the Thursday night before wedding weekend. That night was the night that I asked her out on an official date--or rather I asked her to pray about it and that I would too (she had said earlier that day that she thought it was weird when guys had been praying about dating her without giving her that opportunity to pray about it as well). We decided to break contact for the weekend so we could focus on prayer and not get distracted from that, and I told her that I would call or text her early that next week. It actually worked out really well with the wedding and everything because I had time to pray during the drive but also was able to have fun and keep myself from stressing out over "what-if's" all weekend.

Anyways, from the backstory to the romantic gesture:
Early on when we were texting she sent me a picture of a pencil and told me a story about how she was on her way to class and realized she had forgotten something to write with and was kicking herself about it. Then she found this perfectly sharpened pencil on the ground and to her it was a little message from God about how His timing is perfect and that He has the best in mind for her. So anyways, instead of texting or calling her that next week, I sent her a letter explaining what I had sensed from God that weekend--that it was okay to continue pursuing her. But I also put a perfectly sharpened pencil in the envelope and wrote about how I felt that God had perfectly prepared me for that moment in time.

We talked on the phone the next day and she ended up explaining to me about how God revealed a lot of things to her that she hadn't seen before--sinful areas in her life that she needed to address. She said that it really wasn't the answer she wanted to give me, but she felt like God wanted her to remain single for the time being. Honestly, though, while it was not the answer I wanted to hear, I actually praised God after that conversation because of the way I felt that His hand was in that entire thing, from the moment we met up to that conversation.
We've continued to keep in touch since then and while I think she's had a couple of guys pursue her that haven't turned into anything, she's largely remained single over these 4 1/2 years or so. She's been living and teaching in Paraguay for a couple of years now but is planning on moving back to the U.S. in the spring. From a couple of conversations I have had with her in the past few months, she's been pretty marriage-minded lately and will be more focused on that when she moves back. She will no doubt be quite an amazing catch for whoever does marry her.

Okay, I've spilled all my cheese for the day. Back to punching lions and wrestling bears and eating steaks and stuff ;)

My second ex and I had numerous romantic gestures.

She loved cupcakes. I mean, she was so crazy about them that she could eat a box of 6 in a day! She lived in the north of India, about 1,400 miles away from me. So every time I flew down to visit her, which was once in 3-6 months, I would take a box of cupcakes with her. I would just sit there and watch her eat the cupcakes - it gave me so much happiness.

The first time we met was for my 25th birthday. Well, we were so romantic (no PDAs, mind you) that we got a free dessert at a restaurant, a song dedicated to us at a karaoke bar and other freebies at every cafe we went. People went "Aww" when they heard our story and saw us together. Even better, whenever the air stewardesses saw the box of cupcakes in my hand they went "Aww, that is so cute!" and they always made sure the box and its delivery-boy were comfortable throughout the 2:40 hr journey.

We always surprised each other for our birthdays. For her 24th birthday we visited her favourite childhood picnic spots - the planetarium and the railway museum. We even watched one show at the planetarium and took a ride on the toy train. For my birthday, she made me a very beautiful birthday card. It had different drawings that we had exchanged for each other and a list of the nicknames she had kept for me. The moment I saw the card, I started crying. I cried so much that she had to hide the card to make me stop. That's the craziest romantic moment I've had with anyone.

There was this time when I had lied to her about where I was. I told her that I was going out with mom when I went to play sports with my friends. I had never lied to her until then. She found out and she was very upset about it. She ended up crying and that was so gut-wrenching that I took a flight the next evening to apologize for what I did. I didn't even get to spend 24 hours with her, but I did that just to tell her that I was stupid for lying to her. That is the second craziest romantic gesture I've done for anyone.

There you have it. Now, please let me go and hide myself out of embarrassment. :p

I made this card one time...I drew a picture of an orange bunny holding a heart on the front, and inside I wrote "I love you". And then I put the card in the boy's cubby above where he hung his coat during the school day, and waited...

And I saw him read it, and cringe, and give it to the teacher, who gave it to my mom...

Yeah, I was six. But it was maybe the most romantic thing I've ever done in my life.

It's not MY fault the kid thought it was gross and not romantic. Pfffft.

That's hilarious and it reminded me of this 'story'. I loved the little blond haired girl in 4th or 5th grade just last year - nah I'm just kidding - back when I EYE was in 4th grade and bought her - with my own precious money - this ink pen. It had two hearts on it - like where the clip is and it was silver with gold trim pieces and a pretty nice pen. I put it in a box that had cotton in it. I mean it wasn't a monte blanc or whatever, but it was ok. I got it at the drugstore. Anyway I gave it to her in class and didn't say anything and she asks me "what is this?" and I shrugged and said it was just something I got her. So she opens it and she made me feel like that was best gift she ever got! I even remember her name.

Anyway, it turned out she came from a pretty well to do family and she was doing things like bringing cameras to school and whatever. Probably had the mont blanc's and waterford pens. I saw this Mercedes drive up to the school and let her out one day, so I felt pretty stupid giving her a cheap old pen.

Our family moved from there and so I went back to that school a couple of years later and saw some of my old buddies and then saw her in the hallway of the school. She couldn't have been 12 or 13 and she was even prettier, and she smiles again when she yelled out "I still got that pen!" All I could do was just grin and the bell rings and that's the last I saw of the pretty blond haired girl.

Sorry hoss, I regret to tell you that you guess wrong. I'm one who has never had a girl on whom to do these romantic gestures.

And believe me, when I say I regret to tell you I mean it. Wish it were different, but I just haven't found a girl yet.

okay, so i am probably going to avoid looking like a total sap, but i think it's a lost cause. yes, i am that ridiculously romantic. it's painful sometimes. : )

here are a few of the things i have done in the past for a guy that i was pretty enchanted by:

+ written a lot of stuff. notes, poetry, and cutesy stuff.
+ broke into a guys house so that i could create a pretty elaborate treasure hunt that ended with a pair of skiis
+ conspired with two guy pals who were going to a game with him to swap me out instead for a romantic evening there
+ pretended to forget his birthday so that i could have a surprise party later that day
+ baked six dozen cookies once for my boyfriend who was going away for a couple weeks. i'm not sure why he needed so many, but i guess a lot of cookies are better than a few.
+ also gave a fake gift just to enjoy watching him try to act happy about receiving a sewing kit and a kitchen potholder that was later replaced with something far better (electronic toy that he wanted)
+ one time, the guy i was dating had rattled off a "dream dinner" as an answer to a question i'd asked. i made it for him a handful of dates later. he was super surprised i'd remembered it down to the nnnth detail.
+ i've packed several picnic lunches -- romantic little weird things that amuse me. and for bonus points, fishing was involved. ; p
+ i fixed a scrabble game once. it was so funny. i bought three more games from the salvation army so that i could cheat and give him all vowels and i could spell cool words. i started the game with "happy" and toward the end of the game he figured something was up. i gave him an early anniversary present with "happy anniversary" in tiles taped to the package. it was kind of fun. he was mad about me cheating for about five minutes though. hahaahahaa. ; p

okay, so one backfire:

when i lived in vegas, i had eaten a couple times at this really cool restaurant in which you eat your meal in the dark. i thought it was a cool concept because i could see how it heightened the taste of the food, and that it seemed like maybe a fun thing to recreate at home. i tried a new recipe and made a great dinner. well, i kind of forgot about the fact that they had servers with flashlights to help people up and around if they needed to get up.

well, things went okay until i realized that he'd gotten up to reach for something and he knocked into the table. everything went mostly flying, and i had a lap full of food on this newish (mostly) white dress. i turned on the lights, and it was a HUGE mess. 3/4 of a bottle of shiraz draining on the carpet, steak cooling afoot, and a lot of other stuff randomly strewn across the floor. he felt terrible, and the evening ended with a rented rug cleaner, him apologizing profusely, my dress soaking in some detergent and me feeling mostly stupid for all my grandiose ideas. ; p

Can I help in finding the right girl for you?

From what I understand you need a warm, fuzzy bear with white/brown/black fur (but definitely not blue or pink), who loves to croon, sing, play and eat. Right? Must she also be adept at climbing trees and swinging from branches? Also, should her tail be long enough for her to hang from tree branches using it?

I wrote a guy a poem once. The fact that he was dating his now wife at the time and the fact that it was an I appreciate you and not an I log eyou poem (that was supposed to be I love you stupid fat fingers) probably keeps it from being in any way romantic but it's the closest I can come to any such story of my own.

Beyond that there's a story that my mom surprised my Dad by singing him a song at their wedding ( I wasn't around yet and they got married pre home video so I can't prove this) and another one of my guy friends sang his wife a song at their wedding reception and I thought that was pretty sweet.

So, what is the most romantic gesture you have ever had done or have had done for you?
So, serious answer (even though my previous post is a true story)-

When my husband and I were newlyweds, we had pretty much nothing. He had started a job in a new city and we'd gotten a crappy apartment, and I was trying to find work. We had no money, we could barely pay our rent and were living mainly off of elk meat his parents had given us and a little beef his grandmother had given us when they butchered a cow, plus a big bag of rice, and canned vegetables.

We lived like that for a few months, and it was breaking us both down. Finally, I got hired at a grocery store, earning minimum wage, but it was enough to ease a little of the huge burden on my husband.

I didn't tell him as soon as I got hired that morning; instead, I took our change jar (which had mainly pennies and nickels, some dimes, and 3 quarters), went to a Coin Star machine and cashed it in for about eight dollars, and bought lasagna noodles, cottage cheese (ricotta is gross, and was too expensive anyway), tomato sauce, and a loaf of French bread.

I called my mother-in-law and asked her for her lasagna recipe, because my husband had often mentioned that was his favorite. I was missing a few of the ingredients, but I put together what I could.

While that was cooking, I cleaned up the house, lit candles, put on some of his favorite music, and set up an indoor picnic on the living room floor (what? it was cold outside).

My husband came home to a candle-lit lasagna dinner (which tasted...meh...but it was at least different than what we'd been having), and the news that he didn't have to bear the entire burden of keeping a roof over our heads anymore.

Soooo, I have done a romantic thing or two as an adult :)

That's so rude (if it was intentional). If you don't want someone to call you, if you're not interested, man up about it.

zero, can I get your digits? :D I'll be sure to call you at exactly 7:23 P.M. :p

Lol yea it is rude. I have to confess though, this actually happened to a friend of mine (for real), not me.

The most romantic gesture that ever happened to me was that a girl (who was not my gf) wrote a song for/to/about me and played it for me on the piano. This happened in high school and I wasn't attracted to her, but I did think it was the sweetest thing ever..

All these stories...
