How apt is a Christian man okay to be with a Christian girl who has a belly button piercing/hidden tattoos that are important meanings to her, but not on public display? Is this considered bad or sinful?

As with all 'what/how does a man/woman think/feel/like/dislike/etc...' broad stroke questions, there are no flat answers. Some guys don't care, some guys would love it and some would hate it. There is no single answer. Some people think tats are sins, some don't. Same with piercings.

Personally i despise belly button rings. And i'm not a fan of tattoos on women. I don't see them as sinful, just not what i prefer. But, again, other guys may feel differently.

I know I am going to get a mouthful for saying this but go and look at the origins of belly button rings and why the ladies wore them. All of these things ties up with the woman's lib & Jezebel-spirit and unfortunately from a Christian perspective it is not ok.

If it was my daughter sitting on my lap asking me this question I would try to explain to her as gentle as I could that it is not the place of a Christian lady to get tattoos and belly button rings, but that is just me.

Am I a fan of either, nope. However, would either stop me from pursuing a woman if I was otherwise interested in her, no. I may have a preference that a woman not have them, but I would not let it affect any decisions I make. It is what is tattooed on her heart, not her skin that matters.

I hate this ignorant old school mindset that tattoos and piercings are bad. "Jezebel-spirit"....seriously?!?! There are so many things that started out with a particular purpose and lost their contextual meaning along the way, and we do them all the time.

Piercings and Tattoos aren't bad. They aren't sinful. I don't feel convicted for having tatts or piercings. I'm still blessed

The problem with body art is it lasts 3-5 years and starts to smudge. So to keep the colors and images they have to be continually redone. As you get older you often regret the idea etc. which again is a problem to remove.
Now body transfers which rub off make sense. I suspect though body art is more about saying I am an individual, and I matter. Both of these are true with or without body art. Self image is something you need better clarity on, but part of being a christian is realising God loves us so much He died for us, we matter, at a profound deep level to the creator of the universe.
So body art and piercings have never mattered, and are possibly just a distraction....
This is not an old mindset, this is just life experience....

As a Lynx I have to object. No true un-photoshopped feline would tolerate that treatment. :p

I was just curious as to whether or not you also feel the same about nose rings?

I don't know if you have a son or not, but would you allow him to marry a girl with a nose ring?

The reason I ask is because maybe you're not familiar with the story of Rebekah... the woman Abraham's servant Eliezer found to marry Isaac. The Bible clearly states she wore a nose ring because (Gen. 24) Eliezer gave her one as a gift and "put it in her nose". Not only that, he was obviously carrying nose rings with him while looking for the right young woman to marry Isaac's son, so they must have been fairly common in those days.

I totally understand it might not be someone's preference but when Christians start calling such things "the spirit of Jezebel", I always wonder if they missed this part of the Bible.

As for myself, the only piercings I have are one in each ear and they may as well grow closed because I rarely wear earrings or jewelry at all (in the type of work I do, any jewelry I wore would just get destroyed anyway.) I also don't have any tats and don't plan on getting any, but it's just my preference.

Ironically, my Dad is an ordained minister and my Mom got a tattoo around age 50. She said she'd always liked them and thought they were pretty. He really didn't want her to get one (not for religious reasons--he just doesn't like them) but they compromised and she has a small, colorful tattoo about the size of a quarter.

I don't mind tats/piercings on other people--I've seen some amazing works of art on others that I loved--but have no interest in it for myself. I am often drawn to tattoos on others because I find they each have a very interesting story behind them, and I like people's stories. I am also especially drawn to tattoos that were done in memory or honor of someone else. However, I HAVE seen some tats I'd consider obscene (nudity, sexuality, etc.) or demonic (gang signs, demonic faces and images) that I wouldn't be comfortable with at all.

In the end, to me, it just all boils down to the person and who they are.

IBDesmond,

You may hate old school but its God himself who said in Leviticus 19:28 that says we shouldn't make any cuttings in our flesh for the dead or print any marks upon you. I AM the LORD. So if you have a problem with it, take it up with the Master. God says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14:12. Put no trust in the arms of the flesh. Philippians 3:1-16

Think about it katastrophe, when God told Moses to go and prepare the Israelites to come before Him in 3 days, He told them to wash themselves and their garments and take off the jewelry they had on because they were going to be going before God. So if God told them to take it off back then, do you think His words still stand today? No matter what we want, God's word is law. When we do what He ask of us then we will always have a LIFE VEST. Just a thought. It isn't a bad idea to research the origin of jewelry and why people wore it. God tells us we are going to walk on streets of gold, be surrounded by pearly gates. No time will you see in the bible where it says we will be wearing what the New Jerusalem will be made of.

Please tell you friend to search the scriptures to see if these things are true. Let God have the last say.

If you're not flaunting body parts in order to show off the art, I think you're fine. If a Christian man looks down on you for choices you made before even knowing him, he's not the one for you anyway.

We are no longer under Levitical law, and as Jesus demonstrated in his summary of the law ("Love the Lord your God...Love your neighbor as yourself"), it is not the action itself but the heart behind it that is the problem. I very firmly believe that in a case such as this one, a person can choose out of a wicked heart not to get a tattoo, and a person can choose out of a heart for the Lord to get a tattoo. I do believe that there are precautions that one needs to take and heart examination that needs to be done by one wanting to get a tattoo, but having a tattoo in and of itself is not inherently sinful.

I don't like tattoos and I do think the Leviticus scripture stll stands (because it is a "don't do this" scripture, not a "you have to do this" scripture), just as the 10 commandments still stand (don't do this... or that...), but that's just my opinion..

I don't judge those who have them though. Its between them and the Lord. And I would still date a woman who has them as long as she isn't obsessed with them..

Yeah, I kinda figured this would turn into a Bible Discussions thread... But we need more than one "THAT IS EEEEEVIL!!!" person to make it a true BD thread. Two is the bare minimum, so they can back each other up and agree with each other.

Me, I agree with Ugly. The Bible Discussions Forum people are taking over the whole place these days.

To the topic at hand: I can't really think of any image I would not get really tired of in a few years. So I'm not getting any tats. And making a hole in my body to put a decoration sounds... well... silly and painful. I can wear ornaments without punching a hole to stick them through. But I'm not going to preach to anyone who does get a tat or a piercing.

RememberTheSabbathDay your choice of Bible verses is... unfortunate. There are better ones to support your position. The one you chose was at a time when the people of Israel had greatly erred and they were currently in a lot of trouble. You should research WHY God told them to remove all that stuff. I'm not going to tell you which verses would better support your position because I have no interest in perpetuating the argument, but there are much better ones the "That is eeeevil!" side of the debate could use.
