*At church, person walks past my office and hears modern christian music playing...
"Wow, you like that?"
"Yeah, I've had this album for years."
"I thought you only liked old stuff."
"But you heard christian rap blasting from here just last Sunday."
"Yeah but... well I guess I just didn't notice."

Ever notice that people only notice what they want to notice? Ever get the impression that it gives them the wrong impression?

"Urrrrg! that stupid phone always rings right when I'm sitting down to supper!"
"Um... actually it hasn't rung once during supper in the last two months. You just haven't noticed all the times it hasn't rung."

Where I work the cashiers are always complaining about that one rude guy in line today. They never mention all the nice people they met. When I was a cashier it was the most enjoyable job EVER, because I met so many neat people. I keep wondering what happened to all the nice people I used to meet as a cashier. They're still there, but the cashiers only notice the rude one.

So many people only notice certain things, and they use these to form opinions that are so different from reality that I sometimes wonder what planet they came from. This wouldn't bug me so much if they kept their opinions to themselves, but they keep sharing their wrong opinions at any given opportunity!

I'm not sure why they want to share their opinions so frequently, but you have no IDEA how many times I have heard "Oh Isaac wouldn't like that song" because they think all I listen to is old gospel. Or about music in general, "that style isn't real christian music" and they always mention one certain song someone made as a puff piece, that isn't really good, to support their judgment of a whole music genre as "not real christian music." Or how about "the sound man has no idea what he's doing up there, he never gets the balance right." No, you're just half deaf from demanding the monitors be turned up to jet engine blast level all the time. That's not what I say, but every time they start complaining about it that's what I think.

It reminds me of a James Thurber short story about a gander, his goose wife and their goslings. Someone made a remark that he was a very proper gander, always taking care of his family. Someone else overheard that and thought they said something about propaganda. He told someone else, who said "Yeah, I think I remember him talking to some hawks a few years ago, and I thought they looked a bit like radical islamists." Someone else thought he saw someone that looked like the gander throw something one night that looked like a bomb. Eventually they all got together with their scraps of wrong impressions and ran the gander out of the barnyard.

If you get the impression this isn't a complete post, you're right. It's early in the morning for me. But maybe it can be a discussion. Or maybe I just wanted to rant. I'm not sure.

My friend told me that on a white sheet of paper, if you put a dot there, the only thing you will notice is the dot.

I thought it was just a matter of people liking to complain/have a martyr complex. But yes, I see this too, Lynx.
