My best friend and her husband lived with me for a while. They moved out leaving a lot of their belongings. I have contacted them a few times asking if they want their things. They schedule a date but no call/no show each time. It's been about 4 months and laws say 60 days that their stuff is considered abandoned. I am in the process of getting my house on the market and need to declutter. What would you do? Just get rid of their things?

Are they close enough where you can drop their stuff off at their place?
Or would they be ok with paying shipping costs to mail their stuff?
Or give your best friend a call and say "as much as I love you, you need to get your crap out of my place asap! we can go out to dinner afterwards or something. But for real, move your stuff."

lilbittie, before getting rid of their things, I would first contact them again and let them know what is going on, that you are putting your house on the market and unless they come and get their things, you will have to get rid of them. Be sure they understand the situation. If its not possible for you to keep them for them, and they still don't come, they most likely don't care too much about the items anyway.

I would notify them one more time with this one line added.

If you don't come by and pick up your stuff by _________ 2015, I'm going to sell your stuff in a garage sale and keep the money.

Or you can say you're going to sell their stuff and they can have the money. Whatever. Either way, the selling of their stuff or the promise of money will probably have them running to your home.

I would put their stuff in storage send them the key and the bill then walk away from it.

That would probably cost a lot of money. Also, it's not her responsibility.

I will contact them again to let them know. I'm sure they don't care about having their things. They would have picked them up months ago. For those who have suggested mailing or taking their things to tgem, it is a lot. I would have to rent a truck. Funny how life works out.

Tell the if they don't have it ALL gone by X date it will go in the trash. No need to explain anything more.
