Hello Singles (and friends of other various relationship statuses :D),

A news headline caught my eye yesterday was about a teacher who was under investigation for punishing a child who was left-handed. The teacher apparently wanted the child to use their right hand instead.

In my own family, we have several lefties and the most fascinating thing to me is that some of them are quite athletic, but yet play about half of their sports left-handed and the other half right-handed. While I was shocked that a teacher in this day and age would still try to "correct" a left-handed child, I've also heard a few lefties in my own life talk about being punished in school (some even had their hands slapped with rulers) for using their left hand.

Have you encountered this type of thinking in your own life?

I could be mistaken, (and feel free to provide more background info if I'm missing something), but the main reason why left-handers were historically punished is primarily rooted in Christian beliefs--particularly in reference to passages stating that those who are saved will be seated on God's right side, whereas, the condemned will be shown to the left.

This got me thinking about instances in which people--who truly believe they are following God--invent and enforce such prejudices and abuses (similar to when it was believed that if you could swim, you were a witch or devil and therefore, must be hanged.)

I'm interested in knowing:

1. Are you or is someone close to you left-handed, and have you received mistreatment because of it? How was your situation handled? (Did a parent stand up against the person who punished you?) Were people always trying to "correct" you into using your right hand? And what was the reason given for your "correction"? (Why was it so important to someone that you use your right hand instead of your left?)

2. What situations have you been through in which people punished, oppressed, or wrongfully mistreated you because they felt you were somehow "sinning" or "evil" in some way, when you know you were not?

3. How did you stand up to such people, and how would do you go about correcting them? (Especially if it's a teacher who is mistreating your child, etc.) Were you able to show them through God's Word that their thinking was incorrect?

4. How can we, as Christians, stop such false thinking/teaching, and prevent the abuses that come with it?

I know someone out there is bound to ask what this has to do with being single. From my experience, when we are single, we are often seen as being more vulnerable, and I know that in my own life, I've seen people who have (at times, unwisely) assumed they were free to be more critical (they call it "being honest") or harsh with singles even when the person wasn't doing anything wrong, but yet these people truly believing that they are somehow "helping".

I'd be very interested in hearing your stories, even if they have nothing to do with being left-handed.

I have experience with a teacher who did this. Unbeknownst to me, before it was to late. I was extremely peeved! I was upset with the teacher and upset with the nanny for helping the teacher reinforce it. I was working 18 hour shifts 8 days a week at the time....so no judgement that I didn't notice. Regardless I was excited that my son was primarily left handed, as I am ambidextrous as is my other child, however I was always pushed to use the right hand. My son from day one was all about the left hand. So I was thrilled thinking of his Baseball career. Any way, no other mistreatment for the left handed in my family. Of course no one sine my grandmother has been all left handed....sadly!

Thank you so much for your reply, JeniBean...

After some thought, I know this thread is a bit mashed together and it is at all just meant for left-handed people. Please forgive me, as most of my writing comes on about 4 hours of sleep and after a full night/early morning at work.

The basic theme of the thread is when Christian principles are misinterpreted and instead perpetrate prejudices and abuse. The left/right hand theme was meant to be used as an example.

I wonder... WHY are people still so insistent that children be encouraged or even punished into using their right hands?! It's not the 1800's... so I wonder why this belief is still obviously so deeply rooted in our culture? And, unfortunately, in our educational system...

Seoulsearch,

The next time you want to post something that has NOTHING to do with being single,
but you want to post it in the Singles Forum,
please message me...
I'll be happy to write a more believable segue.
: )

I'm just teasing.
I don't care what anybody posts in the Singles Forum.

All I care is that everybody in the Singles Forum is all happy and chipper,
so we'll all have lots of energy to go over to BDF and beat each other senseless.

In defense of all the people who will comment on the left/right handed thing, I have to state that it is really hard to see what the main topic is. For the record, the main topic is people who try to correct others because they think people are doing something wrong. The whole left/right thing is merely an example. But you have to read the OP carefully to see it, and even with careful reading some people will still miss it.

At any rate, to the main topic. The problem is standards.

No, I'm not saying we should drop any particular standard. But most standards are not in the bible. They are based on PRINCIPLES found in the bible. Standards can, and should, change over time and depending on location.

For example, consider the town with a bowling alley that is family friendly. The local church has no standard against bowling. In the next town over the bowling alley is a seedy place that no christian should be in. That town's church has a standard against bowling. Now should the town with a seedy bowling alley take the other town's church to task for not having such a standard? Should the church in the town with a family friendly bowling alley claim the other church is legalistic?

Thanks, Max!!!

I guess my reasoning is, "I'm Single, Therefore, Any Topic That Catches My Eye Is Fair Game."

And now you can see WHY I'm single. If some poor guy actually agreed to be my significant other... I'd be talking to HIM about all the random things I see/observe/question throughout the day.

*Happily bounces over to the BDF... with gloves already on!*

My daughter is left-handed but she was never singled out for punishment for using her left hand. I, on the other hand am right-handed and I remember getting my right wrist slapped with a ruler by a mean nun more than once for being unruly during weekly Saturday morning catechism class.

I'm really thankful for any and all replies here. I'm going to have to rethink how to word what I'm trying to say and probably try again sometime in the future, but in the meantime...

Jeni and Tourist, I appreciate you sharing your stories, though I'm trying to picture poor Tourist being walloped by an unruly nun. Er... maybe I need to reread that post...

Lynx, interesting analogy and I appreciate, as always, that you're earnestly trying to make sense of what I'm trying to say.

My writings are almost always after about 4 hours of sleep and a full night/early morning of work when my muscles are cramped (obviously, this includes my brain as well) and my thoughts are racing their way to my fingertips in an effort to be materialized... As you can see, it's not always pretty.

And if I had a husband, I'd probably be waking him up at all random hours of the night in order to talk about whatever mindless topic just popped into my head.

I was part of the leftie group that was punished. The reason behind it was that it was considered impolite behavior in the culture I grew up with. I'd have to ask my mother to be sure but I don't think there were any overt religious tones involved. Interesting thought, though. I'm sure that there are plenty of odd longstanding beliefs or cultural norms that are tied needlessly with biblical beliefs.

I remember mostly being corrected when I reached for things or ate with my left hand. Years later and I'm still a persistent leftie although I do eat using mainly my right hand.

I am left hand dominant, but like most Lefties, I have strong right handed ability... the most difficult thing I deal with is writing with my right hand and my knife skills using my right are... comical.

I was not punished, though my paternal grandmother wanted to correct me. My mother did make sure I wrote correctly (no hook-handed writing in HER household) and because of that, really only Lefties notice that I am left handed.

Sometimes with sports it's tough because I have a lot of equal ability, but that is to say, not much sport ability. Often when I learn things from Righties, I use my right hand and then translate the activity for myself.... that included golf, which I do golf left because someone gifted me with a set of left handed clubs (I know, I'm spoiled). I bowl right or left depending on my mood. I can play the guitar as a right handed person does. When I lift though, my left side can carry more weight... and my left is stronger when I'm boxing.

(what were the other questions?)

I'm a lefty and have never felt badly about it. I think it's because my grandma, one aunt, and one cousin are also lefties. So half of my relatives (the ones I'm close to at least) are lefties.

There are two things that I don't like though! In college sometimes the desks are small and they are geared for righties. And notebooks are hell! The springs hurt and I get ink or lead on the side of my left hand when I'm writing.

One of the cool things about being a lefty is that we are smarter! Haha I'm kidding!
But seriously, it's kinda cool that we can take notes while using the mouse on a computer because the mouse is on the right side.

Lefties rock!

I've really appreciated all the left-handed stories because I find them interesting.

I know someone who is naturally left-handed but broke his arm during military training and pretty much had to force himself to learn to be right-handed in the process, which has stuck with him his whole life. Ambidextrous-ity is also fascinating to me as well.

I've just never understood why anyone would feel a "need" to "correct" left-handedness in this day and age... Personally, I've always found it intriguing to watch lefties write! :D And I mean that in a good way!

Wow, as I'm thinking about it... Do we have any left-handed sewers out there?! Seeing as to my knowledge, ALL sewing machines are set up for right-handed people...

I just read a book about calligraphy and it included special instructions for lefties... Oh, the things we righties take for granted!!

I used to work in an office with a left-handed office manager and I LOVED to tease her!! She was such a good sport, too (which is why I did it.) One of my favorite things was to present her with "left-handed" office supplies. I'd take a pencil, put it on the LEFT side of her desk, and say something like, "Look, Trish! (not her real name) Just for you!! I took the time to find this LEFT-HANDED pencil... to make things easier for you!!" (Same thing with the stapler, ruler, paper clips... :p)

More often than not, she would just use her left arm... to throw things at me.

Do you know someone left-handed? Be sure to stay out of the way of their left hook. :D

When I had carpel tunnel surgery on my right hand I had to learn to right my signature with my left hand and submit it to our accounting department because I wrote check requests and they had my right and left hand signatures to o.k. the check writing... that was fun. Also because I was told to change jobs because of the surgery by the doctor I refused to change jobs and instead taught myself how to mouse left handed so now tourist has to move the mouse to the right of the computer every time he wants to use it....lol

Many people at work also thought I was a lefty because of the mouse on the left... It was hard at first but I mouse better left than I do right now....lol

I'm left handed, never been corrected.
