[SUP]9 [/SUP]But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he released his semen on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother.

It's not about masturbation.
But he HAD to masturbate to release the semen, right?

Good Lord, this thread is in such a sticky situation. Lets just say that the sin there was not rasing children to his brother as was his duty. Can we agree thats the point of the verse and move on?

Yes, sure. But Donkey's right. Onan's sin was that he wasn't willing to do his duty for his brother's sake.

Peace to all! If somebody does it to "covet" others for pleasure, then the NT prohibits even mere thinking with malice. Thus, some churches require their members to wear "decent clothes," primarily to prevent malicious, desire-provoking thoughts. As much as we can, being Christians, we try to abstain (for those singles). God bless!

yeah, i have to agree that this is not a topic explicitly discussed in the bible, just as pornography is never discussed in the bible.

however, i'd humbly suggest that the greek word "porneia" references all forms of sexual impurity, and it's literal translation speaks to the act of surrendering (even the concept of "selling off") one's sexual purity. it covers all forms of sexual impurity and fornication outside of marriage (in contrast with moixia, which is marital unfaithfulness).

it's also a reference of idolatry, which i think is quite an accurate label for any habitual sin.

i love that it uses the analogy of "surrender" or "sell" because our spiritual purity is a thing of value that becomes cheapened/lost when we don't hold it in esteem.

in the past, i've heard people say masturbation is okay when there is an absence of lust, and i can't really argue too much with that on specific verse. so, if one can masturbate without any lusting, then perhaps that might create a small bit of ground one can stand on. however, i would be very concerned with the slippery slope of that, along with the directive of making no provision for sin.

however, for me personally, i believe all acts of sexuality were exclusively created for the marriage bed alone.

Haha! That's as subtle as P.O.D's "Abortion is Murder" song.

Masturbation is natural and a human thing to do, its a small thing that I don't think anyone up above cares about too much. In my opinion.

I would suggest that it is not necessary for him to masturbate in order to "spill his seed on the ground." The passage clearly says that he slept with his brothers wife and then spilled his seed on the ground, in other words he was having intercourse with her and withdrawing immediately prior to finishing. Coitus interruptus was (and still is) a commonly used method of birth control.

Sure, I guess that makes sense. I wouldn't know. I've never had sex.

The NT says that the people of this age marry and it also says that not all have the gift of celibacy. Does this mean that only celabents are worthy of eternal life? I don't think so and I think that the answer is in the NT
