So... this deserves a serious discussion. Because I'm honestly wondering how many of us would amputate a limb for money. Please feel free to provide background on why. (Grew up in poverty, would use it to better the world, need it to purchase a lifesaving organ from someone else who grew up in poverty and needs a quick $20 mil...)

That is an interesting thought. I wouldn't do it because honestly I have a hard enough time on my own two feet I couldn't imagine only having one of them, plus I kinda like my feet.

No, I wouldn't do it. 20 million dollars is a lot of moola, but I really can't abide even the idea of hacking off one of my limbs. Besides, I like to be able to walk properly and all manner of things. Good idea for a thread though, Grace. ;)

^_^ Glad we could rouse you to post a thread, Grace. You're awesome, btw!! ..if no one else has told you today.

Would I sell an organ or limb for money? Hmm... I wonder. I don't really love money, which is the root of all evil (*see 1 Tim 6). It does help in several cases, however...

For example, America spends something like $160 Billion dollars on Christmas gifts, decorations, etc...every year. Do you know how much it would cost to give every country, town, people, etc...clean water for the entire earth?? $10 Billion.

Think about it.

So, depending on the cause, sure! Would I give up my legs so the world could have clean drinking water? Absolutely. All the more if it was Christ-centered. Would I give my entire life, my body to killed, for the Gospel? I believe and pray that I would. Life's not about us. It never was. It's about Christ. The thing is... He gives us a pen, so we can write in what sort of role we play in His story. I hope to give the pen back to Him, because He's really a better writer than I am anyway.

That said, I hope to be one of His supporting characters, and if I die, I die. It would be an honor, whether or not I'm ever remembered, to be willing to give my life for the Jesus who was so willing to give His life for me.

"If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord." -Romans 14:8

A foot or a limb? Are there rules to this question - like could I sell my foot and then buy it back and have it re-affixed for a fraction of that $20 mill? Or maybe get a cool, functional cyborg foot, kind of like Luke Skywalker's hand? Or do I just have to be left with a stump?

Thats the thing. I think everyone would do it if it was for helping your loved ones. Want to take care of your wife or kids for life? If you would already take a bullet for them, surely you could spare a foot. You could do a lot more good for others with your lack of foot than you could with your foot. Try doing 20 mil worth of good being foot stingy :p

Reece, I had to read this multiple times, because it looked like you said:

It would be an honor, whether or not I'm ever dismembered...

And I was like O_O

Gotta do what you gotta do, Grace. Being a martyr isn't normally anyone's first choice, but things happen.

With particular emphasis on part B, though the historical positioning and context of the statement is obviously of great importance as well.

The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah's son. If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.'" -Isaiah 7:9

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.1 Corinth 6:19-20

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.Romans 12 :2
[h=3]1 Tim 6:10[/h]For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
1 Tim 6:9
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
Well there are other scriptures on greed.

You know...I was originally going to oppose sparks post using scripture, but after reading through several passages, I changed my mind. Rather...I think I'd just like to post this.

1 John 3:16-18
We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

I would gladly expend myself for the sake of others, and even moreso the Kingdom of God. I'm not saying I or anyone else should be having their limbs or organs chopped off, but I am saying that it's better to be sacrificial and loving than caring only for yourself.

Timothy (or Paul to Timothy, rather) says that 'the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil', but I say that selfishness is the root of all sin. To quote Jesus:

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." -John 15:13

20 million... seems like a lot, but any amount of money changes value with inflation. I'm remembering what happened to the japanese yen a few decades ago. If I traded my foot for that much money, how could I be sure that much money would be worth anything for the rest of my life? My foot however, that has value to me whatever the economy does.

I personally wouldn't do it just for money, I would do it out of love if someone was i desperate need, but even then I wouldn't do it from my own accord, but from the true will of God.
