Hey everyone,

As some here know, I'm a big fan of the ORIGINAL Star Wars movies and as far as I'm concerned, up until December 18, no other movies exist. A co-worker and I have been fiercely debating whether or not the new movie will live up to the hype (he already has his ticket but I'm holding off), and I told him that I am "cautiously optimistic."

One of my little splurges in life are decorative key chains (I don't collect them; I only buy what I actually use), and for years, I'd been telling myself I'd buy an R2D2 key chain (I was particularly fond of the Lego version.)

And then... I saw those pictures of BB-8:

Now, I'm only allowing myself one key chain (because that's all I really need)... I don't want to abandon my beloved R2 but at the risk of sounding like someone who is only into looks... BB-8 is one cute little droid!!!

And so here I am asking myself, Where Does My Loyalty Lie???

Just for fun, is there a time where you've had to choose between:

* Old school or new wave?

* Vintage or modern?

* Familiar favorites, or new faces?

This could be for anything: books, shows, characters, video games, brands, styles, sports teams or activities (did you have to decide on playing hockey or football?) a musical instrument or equipment...

* What did you finally decide on, and what were the deciding factors?

(This thread is intended to be lighthearted fun. I know someone may come along and crash it with Christian martyrdom and that's fine, but my original line of thought for this thread were things we've all loved in pop culture and entertainment, just as a break from all the heavier topics.)

P.S. Someone asked me this morning if I have a lot of extra time on my hands and if that was why I've been writing threads. The opposite is actually true. My life is currently jam-packed and when I reach this kind of stress level I either: 1. watch mindless entertainment such as YouTube; 2. eat mass quantities of junk food (while watching said mindless entertainment); or 3. pester all of you people here and write.

I finally decided that option 3, while perhaps the most annoying, is the least-fattening option. (It's hard to watch useless videos while eating junk food when I write because I have to concentrate on using my brain and both hands all at the same time!)

Ah, I was going to try (I know you're missing polls, Siberian... I'll have to think of a new one soon :)) but imagine the chaos it would have been trying to include everyone's favorite pop culture references! :)

Don't go with R2, ......or that rolling snowman looking robot.

Go with 2-1B
(He's the droid that fixes Luke's hand in Empire.)

No one ever gives that guy any love.

What makes a series better than others is that it tries new things and offers new experiences, characters, and environments. I usually prefer later additions unless it's just fan-service...... which is almost everything nowadays.... or the original was made with more attention and care than the sequels.

Examples of doing a sequel right:
- 2010
- The Dark Knight
- Empire Strikes Back
- Toy Story 2 & 3

I'm scared of this new Star Wars movie because it doesn't look like it's taking any chances. What I wouldn't give for a KOTOR movie or one about totally new characters.

BB was engineered to be cute. It was the result of a company sitting down and deciding "R2D2 was a hit because he was cute. We need to make this droid cute, even cuter than R2D2."

Stick with R2. He's cute because he's just cute. Much better than corporate-generated artificial cute.

This is a good thread to bring up an ethical dilemma I have faced multiple times, and I'm about to face again.

Linux operating systems can be downloaded as big .iso files. Then I burn that .iso file to a blank DVD and have a bootable Linux system. But to download and burn it I have to use a computer... that is running the previous version. I have to use a system to download and burn to a disk the one that will replace it.

Can you imagine how heartless that seems to the old system? "Hey you, go get the Linux that will replace you. Then burn it to a disk for me. And when you're done I'll wipe you out and replace you with the new one." It's kind of like your boss saying, "We're gonna fire you and hire someone else to do your job for less money, but before you go we want you to train the new guy."

Who knew computer nerd stuff could get so ethical?

Because I need much more than looks to bring my lightsaber to life, I'm going to wait and see if this BB-8 has anything resembling a personality.

To tell you the honest truth, my personality is a lot like C-3PO and R2D2 mashed together. C-3 is my cautious, boring, anxious side, while R2D2 is spunky, craves adventure, and always does things his own way, no matter what anyone--human or droid--says otherwise.

I always leaned more towards R2 because he was a reminder to let my obnoxious side out a little more often. :p If BB-8 doesn't have a personality I can identify with... it's all over, and there will no longer be a contest.

One of my favorite lines was when C3PO said something to R2 and R2 made a blatting sound at him. It must have been cussing in droid speak because Threepio complained about his foul language.

I am a huge STAR WARS fan!!! I will find the good in the new one even though DISNEY now owns them. As I was stuck in Disney World for 4 days last week, the place is BB-8 crazy!!! One Star Wars fan said he is in the movie less than 2 minutes, no idea if it is true, as I wont watch the trailer or read anything. I want to be surprised! Regardless I feel he is so pushed as he is CUTE and safe for the real youngsters. Therefore drawing all ages to the movie, probably before it is time too.
