If a unicorn loses its horn, is it still a unicorn?

No, I'm sorry. All the magic is contained in that horn, an upon its loss...you are hereby demoted to being a semi-normal horse.

But does it really?

There was at least one helpful thing I learned from reading A Series of Unfortunate Events and it was this: if you have a set of triplets and you kill one of them, the two remaining siblings do not become twins; they are still triplets.

I'm horribly tempted to ask if surgery makes Bruce Jenner a woman, but that would completely derail the very important subject at hand xD

Sad thing is the unicorn in all serious likeliness is probably the rhino. Their famous horns being torn from their heads pretty much because there's a part of Chinese society believe they have magic powers of, let's just call it fertility. Of course that's nonsense, but is a real issue of our time. It's one of the main reason we could literally be the generation that destroys the unicorn sadly. I know it sounds way out there, but it's really an issue.

In your triplets theory... It's true that it doesn't make them twins, as they originated as triplets, but considering them triplets with the absence of the third child also doesn't make sense at all past sentiment. Logically, they are technically no longer triplets, but neither do they become twins.

To quote the Chronicles of Riddick: "We all start as something else."

As for unicorn-lore, they were often killed to harvest the horns due to the inherit magic possessed in the horn. That's where the theory of magic loss being associated with horn loss originates. It was often folklored that should a unicorn 'lose' its horn, it would either turn into a human or die. Strange to think about, but then...the fantasy world is a rather strange place to begin with.

...and after posting this I read GIS' post about Rhinos... Hmm... *shrugs* Sounds plausible.

Actually, technically, they are still triplets, regardless of whether there are 3 of them or not. Because if you were a twin and your sibling died, you would still say that you were a twin.

It would just be a unic (eunuch). :(
Cool play on words, Zero!!!

Is a unicorn still a unicorn even if it loses its horn? I would have to say yes. Sure, it's missing a vital part, but if a lizard lost its legs, it's still a lizard without legs--i.e., it does not become a snake.

I also wholeheartedly agree with Crosstweed's answer about twins and triplets. Once you are part of a multiple birth (more than one baby in the womb at the same time), that can never be undone. I've known 2 people whose twins died at birth, and each VERY much identified themselves as lifelong twins without hesitation.
