I started reading a lot about 5 years ago and found that it helped me quit smoking cigarettes. Seems boredom is a catalyst for smoking.

Anyway...Ive been trying to make my own personal library of sorts for a while now and was just wondering about some recommendations from others. I enjoy variety ranging from history, fiction, psychology, etc.

Of course the bible goes without saying. I have about 5 of them...so please don't state the obvious here.

Am currently reading the next book by James Rollins "Bone Labyrinth". He has a series called the sigma force novels. Really hard to put down. Thanks!

I've seen it on the best seller list...I aim to get it, but I usually wait for multiple vendors to enter the selling market on amazon. Usually I can get the popular books brand new or like new for under a book if I wait a bit...then its just shipping and handling

I generally read sci-fi, so I have a lot of Frank Herbert, Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Doherty on my shelves.

Neal Stephenson wrote a couple good books - Cryptonomicon and Snow Crash

Robert Ludlum writes good books too if you like spy/crime thrillers

It's old, but The Naked Ape by: Desmond Morris was a good one. So was another oldie, Why Am I Afraid To Tell You Who I Am by John Powell, I believe it was. (both minorly Psych books)

If you like light Theology, The Jesus Driven Life by: Michael Hardin is a fantastic book. As is Saints in the Arms of a Happy God by: Jeff Turner.

The Jesus I never Knew by: Phillip Yancey

Thanks for the recommendations...keep em coming. Not huge on sci fi....but there is a book series I started reading that's awesome with sci fi...waiting for the third book to come out called "morning star" . I can't remember authors name off top of my head tho.

Have any of you read The Last Temptation of Christ? I read the book after I saw the movie. What do you think about it?

Nope, I haven't read the book, but I really like that movie. Willam Dafoe was phenomenal in the movie.

I almost never pay full price for a book. You would be amazed at the library I have amassed for next to nothing. You can buy a lot of good titles (though admittedly several years old) on Amazon for often as low as .01, plus shipping.

Yea he was. Didn't scorcese direct it?

Its only point in controversy was how things transpired with Judas. In the movie it has Jesus and Judas actually similar to closest friends.

The scene where Dafoe comes out holding his own heart is pretty wild.

That is what I always do. I try to get hardcovers for the sake of durability. Most popular books or well known usually have like300-500 sellers for a penny...then the 3.99 for ship and handling. But its still good deal considering places like Barnes and noble charge 20 to 30 bucks for something new.

"Boundaries" by Cloud and Townsend
"Mere Christianity" and "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis
"Living by the Book" by Hendricks and Hendricks
"Darwin's Black Box" by Michael Behe
"Schindler's List" by Thomas Keneally
"The Black Rose" by Thomas Costain (my personal favourite novel)
"Skipping Christmas" by John Grisham

One inadvertently reveals a great deal about oneself by revealing the books one reads and recommends. :)

I'm a frequent flier at Amazon too. There's a used/second-hand book store in my little town that has a good selection of stuff and very reasonable prices, so I've gotten a lot there too.

IMHO, Mere Christianity (the one by Lewis... Not Necessarily the one by Nee) is one book EVERYONE should read.

"God's Smuggler to China" by brother David.

I mentioned that everyone should read Mere Christianity.

That goes double for people on the CC forum because it starts with these words:

"Everyone has heard people quarreling."

It depends what type of books you want to amass. One book that really helped my christian walk and I highly recomend it is:

The Discipline of Grace (God's role and our role in the pursuit of Holiness). Jerry bridges.

The Holiness of God. RC Sproul is another eye opener (its a bit older though).

I would also recommend anything by Tim Keller - many say he is the 'modern' C S Lewis.

The prodigal God
King's Cross etc etc.
