I've been about wondering what makes like interesting. Lately I've been losing interest in everything, even stuff I never thought I'd lose interest in. The same thing happened to me many years ago, but to a much greater degree and at that time it made me think constantly about suicide, but this time is much different.

Maybe it's because I've been through so much these last few years (being a full-time caregiver to my father who was dying of cancer, dealing with his passing, trying to take care of my elderly mom) that it has made me look at life in a totally new perspective, or maybe its part of my grieving process, or the fact that I have to stay strong for my mom, but this time it is not driving me to suicide. This time it's making me feel like I've come full circle, that I've been through the worst life has to offer and I made it through and now everything else is as King Solomon once put it, "just smoke and mirrors"..

But this isn't about me. I want to know what everyone's thoughts are on the subject..

What makes your life interesting? What do you think makes life interesting?

One more question.. How do you keep from losing interest in things?

A quote from someone wiser than I: "We speak of comfort and luxury as though they are necessary for a happy life. The only thing a person needs to be happy in life is something to be passionate about."

For me, music makes life interesting. (Bet you never would have guessed.) But for everyone who is interested in something, there are many who can't see why they are interested in that something. I will NEVER understand why anybody would collect stamps or old coins. And most people don't get why I'm so into music.

Whatever you are interested in, it will probably be hard to explain to others why you are interested in it, and why it makes life interesting.

One more thought: I remember what Mark Lowry once said. "If I had to put all of being a Christian into one word, I'd pick... interesting. Living for Jesus is very interesting. If you want a boring life, stay away from God.

If we are compliant to Him, trust in Him completely, obey Him without abandon, keep our eyes and ears open to the possibilities and opportunities He has for us, He will do things in our lives, steer us to things, take us to places, meet us up with people, that is so fascinating and interesting, there will be nary a dull moment.

Frankly we're never promised an interesting life. But when I find myself going into that decline of finding interest in nothing, I pray almost constantly for a renewal of the joy of salvation; I read my Bible and try to find answers and interest and my way back to God.

Have you ever had a friend who you haven't seen in many years and you get back together only to find you need to readjust? You've changed, gone separate ways and grown apart. It takes work to get back together and have the great relationship like you used to. It's the same way with God. If you don't consciously keep God at the middle of your life, you don't quite "click" the same way you used to. I feel like that same thing on a spiritual level is what is usually lying at the bottom of my lethargy. I'm not quite in touch with God. There is some unconfessed sin lying between us, or I want to go a different way than He has mapped out for me. I've been away too long and I've grown apart (and believe me, this can take an unbelievably short amount of time!) I pray for a renewal of the joy of salvation and He always answers. Last time it took two years before He showed me the tangle and how to fix it and answered my prayer with a "yes"; but He DID answer, and He always does.

That's just my experience, but I hope you find it helpful and uplifting!

Involvement with other people is what makes life interesting to me. NOT enabling, but being involved.

What makes life interesting?

Liberals. Because watching paint dry is so much more entertaining with them around.

Everything to me makes life interesting... I mean I haven't learned how to do everything yet... I know how to do some things like I really love demo....Give me a hammer and a wall to take down and Blond is a happy camper... it means some type of remodel project is going to happen...

Or my sewing machine sits on the dinning room table just waiting for me to make something it is interesting to watch it sit there and wait for me to come and turn it on and get going on a project.... Tourist watches me watch the sewing machine and that is interesting.... I guess we are a couple of watchers....lol

I haven't read every book yet, or met every person in the world yet... Talk about making life interesting.....PEOPLE now there is an interesting subject.... Good and bad interesting.... But no two of them are alike....so many different interesting features.

Then there are movies to watch and songs to sing and listen to and places to vacation and check out which are all interesting to this Blond... Best part is that God made all this stuff for Blond to be interested in and it is interesting to me that someday God will want to live where Blond is with all the other interesting people that wanted to live with Him too....

Life can suck the life out of you sometimes and Blond gets that...but for now this Blond has too many interesting things to do....Best get to it....

Well, Zero, I think for me, it's a mix of God, people, finding things you really enjoy, and always changing/trying new things.

Im a person who can very quickly gets tired of things. Eating the same thing, doing the same thing, following the same routine... That whole concept of diminishing returns really made sense to me in college. With God being the only exception, the amount of utility (joy, pleasure, etc) seems to lessen and lessen until you don't even really enjoy it anymore.

So, how did/do I respond to this? (Within reason, don't wreck your life with drugs or joining a gang or anything) Always try something new. Meet new people. Go new places. Learn new things. Acquire new skills. Work different jobs. Try new food, go to a different store. Change the channel. When you can, try a different car, clothes, living place, events, hobbies, entertainment, and the list goes on and on.

I can't say you'll never be bored or that all changes/new experiences will be for the better or even that you'll find things you don't get tired of... But it certainly does keep life interesting the majority of the time.

I actually think King Solomon became foolish toward the end. He married women God told him not to. He worshiped false idols; got caught up in the politics and luxuries and the trivial nonsense of life which Jesus said are the weeds that choke out the Kingdom of God in us.

Through it all, I prayer, scripture, conversations and relationships with others, work and ministry, my own experiences good and bad, God has been able to save me repeatedly; teach and show me things; help me to love Him and People and life..Lessing them as beautiful things even amidst all the darkness and pain and sadness and mess and anger and everything else.

He's the exact same God of the Old & New Testamanet, as He was before, and after, and still is today. He delivers wih a mighty hand and outstretched arm like the Jews from Egypt, Daniel from the king and the lions, the Jews from the wilderness, everyday people from sickness and death (though spiritual death is much more the issue than leaving this body and plane). He says, "Look! I am doing something new." ...and He does! Creation is still an ongoing process. There are, in fact, new things under the sun. We need God, however, to be able to see or do most any of it. Jesus did say that apart from Him we could do nothing.

I believe Him and what He says/said. I've seen it in my own life. Actual truth vs lies... God vs the schemes of the devil and foolishness of man...our own hubris and folly.

Anyway... I'm going to start going off on tangents soon. Let me just say, Jesus came so we could have life, and abundant life at that. If we're not living that abundant life, than I believe it's because something is missing or needs to change.

Asifinpassing: good point about Solomon getting bored, especially if you take into account what he said in Ecclesiastes about everything being futile (vanity.)

If I lose interest, I lose interest. Same goes for people, I suppose. I'm not materialistic in very many ways and easily part and separate from things. It doesnt bother me, I guess.

Hi Zero, I can understand where you are coming from.

I have spent the last 10 years looking after my elderly aunt while
trying to meet the increasing demands of my employer. The last
4 years has been especially hard to deal with.

I think that a person like you describe is either depressed to some
degree, or maybe they have come to the morose conclusion that
all is vanity just like Solomon.

I probably have a foot in both courts, I wonder what the future will be
like and I tell God I want more than this, I want my life to be useful,
I don't want to go round and round in that old tread mill of getting up
going to work, going to bed, having a bit of fun which is soon forgotten,
for it all to start again.

I want more, not in a material sense, but in a spiritual sense.
I want to save the world, i want to hit everyone over the head
with a bible and tell them to get saved. I want my job to be fulfilling
and have a real purpose not just to line someone's pocket.

I want friends who I can really share with, not just superficial
friendships.

I want time to use the natural musical talents God has given me.

I want to be that person who trusts God 100% and takes everything
to God in prayer, not just out of habit or because it's the Christian thing
to do, but because I really really know God with all my being.

I want to be a person who never worries because I know God is bigger
than all my worries.

I want to be the sort of person who is content even amidst the raging
problems.

Sadly I've got a long way to go, but I can hope. :)

As for the material, while this might give limited joy, I seem to have
lost interest in many material things. Maybe it's because I'm so fed up with
cleaning, washing, fixing, decorating, polishing, maintaining them. Lol
