I was talking to Pip about this the other day. Apparently this is a widespread thing and it drove me absolutely nuts for like a week after I found out about this whole thing. I have very clear, vivid and specific memories of the Berenstein bears and reading the books as a child. I even remember being taught how to read with those books, and that I was pronouncing it as "Styne" like in Frankenstein at first and had to be corrected and told it was pronounced "Steen". Lots of people have similar memories.

However, nope. Apparently it never was Stein, it has always been Berenstain. I usually never do polls but I am curious how everyone else here remembers it.

I remember the books... And I wasn't much of a reader back then... But even I was corrected a few times on pronouncing how to say it... Glad I'm not the only one who wasn't right all these years lol

Hmmm... I remember when I was a kid thinking it was Lincon instead of Lincoln. And when I first noticed it was Lincoln I thought what I was reading was wrong. And for a brief time I thought it had been changed from Lincon to Lincoln all over the world for some reason...

By the way there's a whole subreddit for the Mandela Effect, and multiple threads therein about the Berenst(e)(a)in proof of a glitch in the Matrix.

Ive always heard it pronounced as "steen". Did you ever watch the cartoon? They pronounced it as steen there.

Who ever told you to pronounce it "styne" must of not have known how to pronounce it : p

You misread the OP, nobody told me to pronounce it "styne". I had to be corrected and taught it sounded like "Steen" :p. I never seen the cartoon though, only read the books. And nope, go back and youtube the cartoons. They pronounce it "stain", not "steen".

For real? I could have sworn they pronounced it as steen.
It would be weird if they didnt, since reading the name youd think it were "styne". That would mean someone would have had to have went around pronouncing it wrong, and everyone followed along with them for some crazy reason : p

Ya, for realz. When I first heard about it being called stain, I thought it had to be some kind of internet troll. I even went so far as looking for old books and all that good stuff thinking I could debunk it, but nope.

Oh yeah, I forgot to personally weigh in on this. I had those books and I recall them being the Berenstain Bears. I think so many people remember them the other way because Stein is the natural way you would expect it to be spelled.

Gold-Styne (Goldstein)

Franken-Styne (Frankenstein)

Therefore, Beren-Styne.

Or so it seemed... if you followed the pattern.

And if I remember right, growing up, all that was available was the books--at least at the time, I didn't have access to recordings or a TV program, so it just seemed like the natural way to pronounce it.

Great question!! Very nostalgic! :)
