Hey Everyone,

I was just curious about this, because I've seen it happen time and time again: what do you think of using pictures in avatars, profiles, and albums... that are of someone who isn't really you (but is extremely good-looking), and quietly allowing people to believe that picture is actually of you?

I have to be honest. I'm certainly no online expert, but I've been on and off the online dating site/chat circuit for maybe 8 years, and in all that time, I've never once heard of a user who represented themselves with a photo that looked like a model... and was actually that person in the picture.

While I've never been a mod, and I'm usually the last to know what's going on, people do often talk to me about their lives. And what I'd find happening is that (unsurprisingly), the most popular people were the ones with the most beautiful photos. Everyone was trying to talk to them, whether the person in the picture claimed to be taken or not.

Eventually, someone would try to meet one of these beautiful people in real life... and word would get out that these beautiful pictures... were just that--a flat picture with a mystery person behind it... who was in love not with the people they met, but with all the attention these pictures were getting.

What do you think?

* If people use beautiful photos of beautiful people who could very easily be mistaken for them, should they put some kind of notice in their profile that says, "This is not actually me"?

* Does everyone have a right to choose whatever photos they wish, allowing others to believe that picture is really them?

* What about using pictures that really ARE you... but, let's say, from 10 years (and 50 pounds) ago? What should the guidelines be regarding honest online representation of oneself?

* If you're in a relationship (or claim to be in a relationship), is it ok to use someone else's picture then, because you're technically "not looking" anyway?

Now I know there are some exceptions. One user here in Singles used a photo of an actor for his avatar, but this actor is known for a specific genre of work. Someone who obviously didn't know who this actor was mistakenly thought it was an actual picture of this member, and I doubt this member meant to deceive anyone with that picture.

However, I made a post in another thread that I've gotten to a point where I don't trust pictures in which the person looks like a model. In my experience, they'll usually say something to the effect that they have a friend/relative/cousin's uncle's stepfather who is a photographer... and can make anyone look like model. Sure... and I have an oil well in Texas I'd love to have you invest in.

Maybe I'm just turning into a hardcore cynic.

Or maybe I'm just more than a little sad to hear about yet another deceit via a beautiful online picture--that represented someone else.

I would love to hear about your thoughts and experiences!

P.S. Once again, I'm sorry for the typos in the title. I actually changed it three times and obviously didn't delete everything from the last edit.

It just wouldn't be an SS post without an entire list of errors. :)

P.S. This thread is also based on my own experience.

During the first year or so of my own online dating adventures, a guy contacted me who had pictures that looked like a model. This set off my warning bells right off the bat because (and I wrote another thread about this a long time ago), I don't attract guys who look like models. It's not that it's not possible, it's just that I know my whole life, guys who look like that have never tried to talk to me.

This is why I think it's important to know whom you attract online vs. in real life, because if there's a sharp difference, it might mean you're representing yourself in a much different way online. Being realistic can save a person a lot of heartache.

When I cautiously complimented this guy's pictures... he brushed it off with, "Oh, my sister's a photographer. She can make anyone look like a model." Well... uh... For instance, in one picture he was shirtless... and chopping wood. Sorry, but that was another red flag (it looked way too staged and all geared towards getting attention.)

Long story short--not only was this person not the guy in the picture--but he was married. Unless, of course, he was lying about that, too.

Be careful out there, folks. One thing I love about the CC Singles community is that I think, in our own way, we all try to look out for each other.

I don't believe they should. They need to happy for how the Lord made them. Most people who are buetifull got no act right. Some do however. Most I go to school with don't though. I would love to be pretty, but I'm not. Mine is the unfading buety of a quiet soul, which is of great worth in Gods sight.
Just be who you are:) don't be someone your not. It doesn't matter what you look on the outside. What matters is your heart:)

Hugs, you ARE beautiful. We know, because we SEE you on these pages. :) <3

What's more, you have "the unfading beauty of a quiet and gentle spirit, that is valued greatly in the sight of God." (1 Peter 3:4).

God bless you, hon.

For the record, the feline in my avatar is MUCH more handsome than I. He can't help it though, most felines are just handsome by nature.

Kim you mentioned a picture of yourself, but from years (and pounds... your words, not mine!) ago. I have another monkey wrench to throw in. What about with makeup? No I'm not preaching against makeup. But the purpose of makeup is to make your face look different. If one would not use a picture from years ago, would one use a picture wearing makeup?

Just something to ponder. Where is the line, and how do you know where to draw it?

Lynx,

Apparently, you have the "cat" part right... but have dropped the "fish." :D

Actually... my avatar pic was taken 2 days ago, and I've been roughly the same weight for over 20 years.

You asked a really good question. I think the question is all about honest representation--how honest should honest be? And do the rules change for someone "single" (and looking to attract other singles) vs. someone who is "taken"?

I AM wearing makeup in my avatar photo, but I don't think anyone can really tell :D.

For my own self, I've always chosen pictures of me in everyday life. My thinking is that maybe, if the person likes the way I look every day, he might also like me when I put in some effort. :D

I have little tolerance for those that post pics pretending to be someone else. It's not really the celebrity thing; I have no problem with that. It's the random pics of someone they found on google or whatever. I don't get it.

As far as the "professional" looking photos, of course it's entirely possible that someone can have that done, but it's not what most people would typically use on a forum like this. Instagram? Sure. More times than not, those pics do prove to be fake.

And with the age thing, I couldn't care less. You are you. Use your baby pic if you want to lol.

If you pay attention, most people pretending to be someone else will usually tell on themselves at some point.

That's why I don't use a picture. I couldn't find anyone who looked better than me....LOL

I am seriously just kidding there...but to be serious here, I don't think people should use pictures of other people. I think that is being deceptive.

I know this is out of the blue, but I still think Miah was who she said she was.. (the supposedly young female pilot who was a member here)...because of one very significant clue... She had posted a picture of her table with her coffee and sunglasses on it and I think one of those makeup things that women carry in their purses and it looked like a nice candid pic and she wrote something like "getting ready for another day at work".

Well.. I noticed there were a few pages of paper in the pic that had writing on it which couldn't be read unless you zoomed in like 200%. I was wondering what it was and I saw that they were ICAO codes. Hardly anyone even knows what ICAO codes are, let alone has a printout of them next to their morning coffee unless they are a pilot, and not just any pilot... a commercial pilot. And it wasn't like she was trying to flaunt its presence in the pic because you had to zoom in real close to see what it was... Anyway, it doesn't matter now I guess.. :p

It could be a mental thing too. I think people truly dont understand how damaging a body disorder can be. Or even if your just that insecure and self esteem. Even the littlist bit of attention can feel like the world if your suicidal. Even if its not for the right reasons or even you just the words sometimes can be so much help. Ik it doesntake semse bevause its jot really them but some people need to live in a little pretend world to just survive. Even tonight im just struggling to hang on. Id never post my own cause ik it wouldnt be accepted, yet i have people refuse to talk to me, be mean, say im catfishing etc etc for not showing. Sometimes its not evem worth trying to find someone who wont mins. Or maybe try they are at the breaking point and even just admitting they dont like how they look, or just the one more person rejecting themcause they wont show could be the last straw. Im deff not saying this applies to all cause of course it doesnt, but its another point of view and from someone with serious body issues.

Also sorry for crap typing. Im on my phone and bad anxiety so im shaking.
