Hey people, I know this is a delicate subject, but an important one for single christians. I'm a single male and raised catholic, and feel that there seems to be some kind of tacit approval in today's permissive society, in which most people assume that it's ok to pleasure and relieve yourself. As singles, we may feel that need very strongly, but does that make it right? As christians, I think many of us feel deep down it's wrong to do it, no matter how strong your need and desire may be. I struggle with this issue daily, and would like to hear your opinions, and especially from christians who are trying to abstain from it, as I am trying to do. Thanks and God bless.

There are multiple threads on this subject. All you have to do is search 'em by the keyword "masturbation".

I believe it is wrong. However it is something that a lot people struggle with. The bible says lust is wrong. Masturbation will cause you to lust. It says to excersize self control. Read Galatians chapter 5 and second timothy chapter 3. I believe they both talk about self control. It says somewhere that man should marry so that he doesn't doesnt burn with passion. However, if your single, its not likely your getting married soon. Pray about it and read those verses/chapters, I believe this is what it is talking about.

I suffered from this throughout my teenage years. I found that the dirtier I felt, and the harder I tried to stop the worse I became, and the greater the allurement. I believed I could not be a Christian and do variousd things wrong?(including masturbation)that I was doing. But I now know I was putting the cart before the horse.
I was fortunate to read a book on Grace, it told the heart of the Christian message. It wasn't what I in myself could struggle to stop doing, but what Christ could do through the Holy Spirit if I trusted him. I became a Christian and told Jesus I did not want to masturbate and then I left it in His hands. I lived by the principal of faith in Christ. I was a Christian because I trusted that Jesus died for me, that was my basis, not how good I personally was.
For the first few days I ontinually masturbated, but instead of condemning myself I focused on Jesus and trusted him and rejoiced that I was saved. It wasn't easy. A voice kept saying in my head.
'You can't be a Christian and act like that.'
But I ignored it, I was saved by faith, not my own goodness. Within a week the masturbation stopped, and I had been griopped by it for six years. I hope that may help

God Bless

Thanks for your responses. All the other threads on this subject seem to have been shut down, and I feel this is an important subject because it is such a common sin of the flesh, especially among males. I feel that christians must be confronted with this issue, so that they question whether they actually believe it is ok, or if they just rationalized it and justified to themselves. I know only too well how difficult it is for a male to resist, but that doesn't change the right and wrong of it.

It sounds like you are searching for answers and I can recommend a really helpful book that ministered to me once.

It's called "Hang on to your Hormones" by Beverly Hadland. If you can't find it in a book store you could contact them directly I suppose?

She is now married so her last name is Turner.

yes, it opens up the doors to gates of hell!! but seriously satan can use that to his advantage, what we think is not that bad, were using that part of the choice process called the knowledge of good and evil what we think is good and act on can soon when getting hibitual turn evil, so its best to listen to the tree of life(the WORD of GOD) to keep ourselves clean from all lusts. repent rebuke replace with the WORD also pray to GOD he will give you your hearts desire for companionship, and thank him for it .... stay in his will GOD bless

Well, there's no actual law or command in the bible that deals specifically with it and says don't do it. It is wrong in the eyes of many and has been since the early days of christianity, and prior, in Judaism. Therefore it is wrong, but not sinful. Sin comes by the law, without a law about it, it is not sin.

"Masturbation" is a sign similar to your car being low on gas. Often we seek satisfaction in the flesh when we're not satisfied in God.

It's wrong but its' not sinful.
It all depends on that doesn't it? Who is the master and what is the bate? If the master is self and the bate is spending time fantasying over what we don't have then how can it be harmful to one's spiritual growth can it not? What kind of life did Jesus Christ live? He lived a Holy life style, he was a single man and stayed that way to prove that we can overcome. He is the best example for both men and women. Interesting isn't it that God came down as a man instead of a woman. I guess God knew what he was doing. If he did it at the cross then surely he can do the same thing in our own personal lives. It just depends on how much faith you have that God can set people free from lust and note he can and will do it if people seek him.

I guess as a female I see masturbation different than a man. I always thought of it as a release of body fluid and tension, almost like urination. I always thought it was best for a male to sastify this urge than to dwell and "lust" after females because his body was uncomfortable. I don't really see this addressed in the bible, but yet I don't really see any other body functions addressed either. Can a male masturbate and not lust but use this only as a relieving device? I have no clue myself. I'm just asking a question.

Well, I can understand your view. But as a male, I've always known that it's wrong because I was taught that the seed of life is sacred. When males masturbate, we spill and destroy that seed. I think that's why satan tempts and torments males to do it so much, making it as hard as possible for us to resist. He knows its a sin for us males, so of course he wants us to do it. I know that in my catholic upbringing, the males were taught to try as hard as we can not to do it. I don't think they even discussed it with the females LOL.

it's a very hard struggle for any christian male, but sin is sin, wrong is wrong, no matter what. As HeartofGod points out, God came down to earth as a man instead of a woman. Why? It's probably because the sexual temptations of a man are the most tormenting. So Jesus became the perfect example of facing great temptation and overcoming those temptations and never giving in. I think it's self evident that Jesus NEVER masturbated, even though he was a male and faced that temptation, and that alone tells us that it has to be wrong for any male to do it.

So to any male reading this thread, i want to challenge you to question what you're doing and to at least make every effort that you can to resist. You know deep down that it's wrong! Try harder to resist! I know how difficult that is, but you have to try harder! If you're accustomed to indulging in it and you think its ok, then you've been seduced by the sexually permissive society. Dont forget, the permissive society is one of satan's best weapons! Business is booming for him as he rakes in the souls who have been lured by the pleasures of permissiveness. Satan sure knows how to bait his hook, he knows what we want. But are those pleasures worth your soul? No matter how good it feels, is it worth eternal torment? Think about it!

i know the torment of male sexual frustration, and it is very bitter, I grant you that. It is hard to endure. But eternal torment in hell is far worse! FAR FAR WORSE! Think about it! And if you need help with this problem, you can contact me.

Why is it sinful when God gave us wet dreams? Wet dreams are often more severe emotionally and lustfully than masturbation.
