Does this mean you were not celibate before this? If so, why the change? The scripture says that fornication is not what God would have for us so God will provide the self-control for you. Does this help in following Jesus more closely and with your friendships? God made sexual intercourse as a means of bonding two people in marriage and producing children, so I'm glad you are celibate as you are not married. Ammabev

I'm celibate. Mostly voluntarily. It works for me and feels natural.

I prefer to think of the word purity rather than celebacy.

Celebacy just conjours up pictures of medieval half bald rotund monks
in brown robes. :)

The bible puts it this way. It's interesting that v6 includes not to take advantage of
or defraud his brother in this matter (I take it to mean sister/brother etc). We think
it's all about us when sexual immorality is brought up, but what about the other
person who we cause to fall along with us....

I believe that as Christians we have a big responsible to ensue we don't cause a
weaker brother or sister to fall or cause a non Christian to fall in this matter.
Its not all about us. In fact no sin is just about us, it often involves someone else
and it always drags the Holy Spirit living within us, into places he does not wish
to go.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 NKJV
[3] For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from
sexual immorality; [4] that each of you should know how to possess his own
vessel in sanctification and honor, [5] not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles
who do not know God; [6] that no one should take advantage of and defraud
his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we
also forewarned you and testified. [7] For God did not call us to uncleanness,
but in holiness. [8] Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God,
who has also given us His Holy Spirit.

From a males POV, it has some benefits. It grounds me regarding my drive for fleshly pleasure.
At this stage in my life, I miss the intimate physical contact probably more then the sex.
If that helps...

How does involuntary celibacy work, out of interest?
Well, Jesus talks about three kinds of celibates, or "eunuchs" in Matthew 19:11-12:

1. Those who were born eunuchs
2. Those who were make eunuchs by men
3. Those who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven

The first and second ones are already involuntary celibates whose celibacy they didn't cause. It works for them because they have no choice, neither is there the temptation found in non-eunuchs (I think, correct me if I'm wrong).

The third one is a true voluntary celibate, and made it permanent. Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't being a eunuch literally having been "spayed or neutered"?

But I have a feeling that neither of us have ever taken Bob Barker's advice for ourselves. So, my only guess is that those who are non-eunuchs but are involuntary celibates find other godly ways to deal with any pent-up frustrations. They have to, because of the oversexualized culture.

I am celibate because I am single. While I am probably "past my sexual prime" and my hormones are in decline, my desire to connect with someone sexually is low. My desire to connect with someone intimately - anyone - on a personal and spiritual note is high.

Before anyone get their undies in a bundle with my desire to connect with anyone (male or female) intimately I am not talking sexually. Intimacy doesn't always entail sex.

A 'celibate' and a 'eunuch' are two different things...

A 'celibate' is someone who abstains from sex.

A 'eunuch' is someone who has been castrated. ( Yes, you have that correct. )

Castration is reported to cause a serious and severe decline in sexual desire. Thus, a 'eunuch' is thought of as having little or no sexual desire.

A 'celibate', on the other hand, has [ "a full complement" ] of sexual desire - yet, abstains from sex out of the will to control their sexual desire.

With a 'eunuch', it is a "default condition"; no will power is required.

With a 'celibate', however - it is a deliberate control by will power.

I don't understand how celibacy can be difficult, unless you're living with someone or are open to having sex in public places... If not, then how is one in even the slightest danger of having sex??

How does involuntary celibacy work, out of interest?
I know a lot of people, Christians or not, who are not having sex simply because they don't have anyone currently in their life who is interested in having sex with them.

They're interested in having sex a-plenty, they just lack the opportunity.

Many are too shy to find someone, can't find someone, or aren't interest in doing what it takes to find someone.

But if they had someone, yes, they'd be having sex. Therefore, they're celibate because of a lack of availability, which I personally see as a form of involuntary celibacy.

And no, I definitely not saying it's the correct mind frame at all. But it's something I've observed in a a lot of the people around me.

Who is going to admit to not being celibate? Make this thread more interesting.
