I love musicals. I love everything about the genre. The optimism, the downright silliness of breaking into song at a moments notice, the accompanying dance moves whether it's Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, or Hugh Jackman...

Galatea and I were talking on the Romantic Movies thread about 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, which lead to us talking about musicals in general. It seems I am not alone in my love for musicals (hooray!).

So let's share the love! Come post your favourite musical number from a movie/show here.

The first one that came to mind for me, was the unforgettable number where Harold Hill rhymes T with P, and that stands for Pool...

First, welcome fellow Canuck! :)

When I was a kid, I was taken to see several live musicals... Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, and a few others. I kind of avoided them during my teens, but saw Showboat live in my late 20's, and have developed more appreciation lately. The town where I live has a Christian college that has done several live productions of well-known shows. In the last few years I've seen excellent performances of The Sound of Music, The Music Man, and Fiddler. I would not say it is my favourite musical genre, or even among my top five, but I do have good memories of most that I've seen.

Hmmm... favourite musical number... Tevye singing Tradition!

Hi Tasha,

One of my favs is Fiddler on the Roof! For one thing, I love Jewish culture and how some of it foreshadows the Jewish Messiah, The Savior of the world. I highly recommend this movie to all.

I would have added it to the Romance movie thread, but I don't think others would have considered it a romance ....... it doesn't really fall into that genre, but I love it where Tevye and Golde sing their love song to one another.

The most romantic is when there is no romance. :)

The
opening - A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But here, in our little village of Anatevka, you might say every one of us is a fiddler on the roof trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without breaking his neck. It isn't easy. You may ask 'Why do we stay up there if it's so dangerous?' Well, we stay because Anatevka is our home. And how do we keep our balance? That I can tell you in one word: TRADITION!

This is one of the best musicals you'll find. When we first saw this my young son got up and attempted to do the Tevye
dance while Tevye sings, "If I Were A Rich Man", all the while pitching hay in his barn. You'll laugh, you'll cry, ......every emotion engages though out the movie. Anyone else watch this movie?

Great minds think alike. You beat me to it on Tevye. I guess our fingers were typing at the same time.

I also really enjoyed The Sound Of Music! I personally like musicals that are set in an historic setting.

There are two things in particular which stand out to me regarding Fiddler... the first is that in the world of Rodgers and Hart/Hammerstein, a small-budget show with an unknown cast became a massive hit.

The second is a sad note: at the end, when the daughters are going off to the four winds, one mentions that she and her husband were planning to go to Warsaw. As the show was set prior to WWII, it is a poignant reminder of what became of so many Jews under the Russian and Nazi pogroms.

I will never forget my mom taking me to see the Broadway play in the late '60's.

The musical (really an opera, since there is only singing/music) that brought me to the Lord, and why.

(And some day, I will be able to listen to it without crying.)

A song I related to differently when I was young than I do now much older. And it's still changing the closer sunset comes.

And I absolutely love dancing, but this is me learning how to dance.

I used to work so hard and for weeks to learn how to do a dance as simple as The Rock. (Butt stays above the leg stomping. Stomp left leg. Stomp right leg. That's it. Whole dance. lol) Supposedly not hard, but I've got no leg coordination. lol

Hubby hates musicals, so one of the first movies I treated myself to while he was gone. Probably my favorite! (That and less tears than Jesus Christ Superstar. Not to be confused with no tears. Just less tears. lol)

They really were like fiddlers on the roof. Doomed to fall, yet playing a little tune until then.
