I was thinking about some things that were very popular before but aren't anymore and thought it would make an interesting thread...

Tell us what fads or trends you remember or that you're aware of right now...

I'll start...

I remember back in the mid-1990's everyone seemed to want a mountain bike. I think it was when they started coming out with affordable lightweight mt. bikes and they had 21 speeds and quick-shifters and some had shock absorbers and there were all these lightweight aluminum and titanium parts coming out that you could buy to make your bike lighter. I was totally into it myself and used to go mountain biking in a couple of state parks here in southern california. There were always a lot of other mt. bikers there too. Some with very nice bikes.

There were like these two schools of mt bikers... the downhillers and the technical riders. The downhillers just wanted to go fast without crashing. I was strictly a technical rider. I loved trying to negotiate a narrow winding trail at sometimes a snail's pace while taking in the scenery and all. I hated going downhill lol.

The only ones that stick out in my mind were the silly things girls in my class did to stay up with the trends like:

loads of hairspray and bangs that rose to the sky

tight rolling the legs of their jeans

multiple colors of socks and jelly shoes

stone washed jeans

...absolute silliness. Fads are funny. I used to get quite a chuckle at how people would bow to peer pressure and follow along with silly things.

When I was a teenager (10-13 years ago) sequin belts like these were really popular, as were...

Puka shell necklaces

heeled flip flops

and Juicy Couture purses (ew!) I had the above items but not these nasty purses. :p
They were really expensive too. I remember a friend of mine got one for like $300.

Back when I was in high school, it was popular for the boys to wear tight skinny jeans and eye liner, and to gel their bangs down in front of their eyes.

The music during that time was awful too : p I really hated the band My Chemical Romance. I remember the metal band System of a Down becoming more common too, where at first it was just a band that the metal-heads liked.

When I was in middle school, all the boys gelled the front part of their hair upwards, I never understood that trend : p I sometimes see my nephew do this too, am surprised that one still exist, haha.

Anybody remember Tamagotchi and Digimon? Anyone?

Hello?

Hey, sir, could you put your smartphone down long enough to answer me? :p

Well if anybody misses it, there's still a virtual version.

The Matrix happened, but it didn't happen to us.

Actually I can still remember that advertisement jingle...

"And face your foes direct
When you Battle-Connect
So let the fight begin
And may the best beast win

Prepare to Digimon
The fight goes on and on!
Prepare to Digimon"

Actually it was that last line about the fight going on and on that put me off them. I never did like games where you play it just to get stronger so you can keep playing it, for no apparent reason. Kinda like MMOs, never did like them either, for that same reason.
