Default What do you do in life that makes you feel like you are fulfilling a calling?

    Hey Guys,

I don't do this posting threads thing very often. I hesitate because I feel like so many threads have been created and I am probably repeating a topic. Tonight, though, I was left with this feeling at the end of the day. It's a feeling I love. I had a pretty mundane day. I woke up and immediately began to clean. I cleaned the bathroom. I cleaned my kitchen, finally catching up on the dishes. I vacuumed and shampooed the carpets. My bedroom still looks like an actual tornado breezed through but that cleaning is for another day.

I picked up my niece. My nephew had been dropped off. I organized a fun night for the kids and their cousins. I took the girls to the mall. The guys stayed back and played video games. We all had dinner. I made 4 batches of popcorn and they are all currently watching a movie together.

It's such a simple night -nothing outrageous or crazy- but I feel like I am living God's calling to the fullest in moments like this. I was created for this. I feel like I was fulfilling one of God's main purposes for my life, being a mom. Another area of life I experience this feeling is when I'm worshipping/leading worship at church. It's the most satisfying of feelings.

So, my question is....what in life makes you feel this way? I think some of you might have similar answers and some vastly different. I would love to know what makes your heart sing...what makes you feel you are fulfilling a calling?

I've never felt that I'm fulfilling a calling. I've just sort of stumbled into things as they
    came across my path.

    Things like:

    Being a Sunday school teacher
Helping with teen youth group group
Providing music in my first church at various times
    Volunteering on children's camps
    Supporting open air preaching
Working temporarily, then later volunteering for the same Christian charity
Helping the pastors wife with her cleaning
On the worship team at my current church for 10 years
Now looking after my elderly aunt which is the hardest thing ever.

Ive never thought of any of the above as being a calling, they all sort of happened.
Im still not sure if I was even suppose to do the above or not. We needed Sunday
school teachers so I volunteered for example.
He is God and we are not.

I believe we all have a primary calling (called to follow Christ each day) and secondary callings that can change and grow. Secondary callings are what we do in life. Being a pastor is a secondary calling but so is being a mom or a teacher or whatever you "do" in life. Those can be acts of worship if Christ is made the center of them. Are all of them callings? Probably not but I would be inclined to think at least one or some of them are things you have been called to do. I think sometimes we get caught up on that word "calling" as this hallelujah chorus moment where you find the one thing you will do the rest of your life and I'm pretty confident it's not like that. It's a series of things we do over our life, the normal, the work - and we do it with the intent to glorify God.

I think for some people, they probably do have a specific big star calling.

Paul in the bible for example, or Abraham. Some people do have very big things they are
suppose to do. Leading ladies and men, think of the movies. I have a friend who
works as a missionary for WEC, that sort of thing. She felt it was something she was
always suppose to do. Plus I know a couple who worked for Whytecliffe bible translators.

Then for the rest of us we still do what we do but are part of the overall cast. Like Lydia in the
bible the seller of purple, rehab who protected the spies, the boy with the loaves and fishes.
They got a mention in the bible even though they weren't the star attraction. They still did
their thing and said their lines as part of the movie.

for my physical work, I found out that I love programming alot. I found that always progamming, reading new books on programming. I found happiness in it alot.

For spiritual, since I was a kid, so many prophesies have came out about me and are still coming out from different people saying I will end up working for God and that is where I will find true fulfilment in life and I discovered that whenever I preach or talk about Jesus, joy always fill my heart and I always fill more accomplished than even when I write program. Like yesterday, I was alone with a girl in her bf room with nobody there with us and my mind was running through a lot of emotions since the girl was beautiful and also was smilling at me than usual, sex ran through my mind and when I opened my mouth to speak, I started preaching (is like a power always overwhelmed me each time am in such situation). By the time I was through preaching, I felt relieved and the kind of emotions that ran through me was unspeakable

This is useful for giving some guidance on your gifts.

Whenever I have tried it, I always come up with a high score on teaching.
I suspect most people on CC would, especially those who frequent BDF!

I agree with you. I have always been called to lead worship. I've known since I was a child. I probably didn't state it well, but what I meant was, that's not my only calling. I used to think that was it, there wasn't anymore. As I grew in the Lord I realized,
yes, that is my calling but it's not my only calling. Right now, in addition to leading worship, my vocational calling is to work with the developmentally disabled. Also, being a mother is a part of that calling for this period in my life.

Working with my disabled girls and trying to help them have a more enjoyable life. It also drives me crazy, but it's pretty fulfilling. I also feel nice when I can volunteer to help someone who can't help themselves.
If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.

I feel fulfilled when someone talks to me about their problems. I just listen and say some encouraging words, sometimes I also rebuke them and they feel better afterwards.

Once I thought ministry was my goal and I ended up sad, bitter and disappointed. I ended up working to death without a real smile within me. I used ministry to pursue selfish goals and I ended up being cocky, arrogant and prideful. I used to be zealous about the great comission and I neglected my relationship with my family. I used to scheme dreams and big projects and always amountingg dreams after dreams because this world tells us to have big dreams.

Honestly, I just want to be like Christ. That is a worthwhile calling for me. To be like the most majestic man that ever walked this planet is a tremendous privilege for me. That is something worthwhile to live and die for. To be like Him.
When I relized that, my life changed.

If I strive to be like Him then ministry, the Great Comission, family, purpose and everything else makes sense to me. I will not need to find joy in ministry but to find joy in being like Jesus.

that is the mistake of most men of God. they place ministry above their own salvation and they believe ministry is the alpha and omega of their relationship with God. Not knowing that is not how it ought to be. And this is how it ought to be in order of importance.

    i. Your salvation first.
    ii. Your family will follow.
    iii. Your ministration will follow.

I feel like this when I am doing my job at work and doing it well. I take a quiet pride in doing my job well. I don't talk about it a lot, and it's only a job at a fast food factory, but whatever my job is, it is important to me to do it well.
