Here's a bit of a twist: My dad has a song in mind that he says he wants played at his funeral. Not exactly a lousy past/memory, but now when I hear Bron-Yr-Aur by Led Zeppelin, it's hard to not think about him passing away someday.

    Oh man.

    That makes me sad.

Come to think of it, my parents have specific hymns they want played at their funerals as well...

I'd better not dare look up what they are, or it'll have the same effect.

(Makes me think about how a person could really mess everyone up and say, request a ridiculously infamous song, like "The 12 Days of Christmas" or something as their funeral dirge.)

Yeah there is a song I can't listen to. It was supposed to be mine and my ex's song...

I found a recording of that song with a message recorded to another woman saying he always thought of her when he heard that song. Needless to say, A very good song is a tad bit ruined for me. Lol

That was a LONG time ago...no need to feel sad for me. I'm not sad.

What's lousy is when people I know and love ask me to sing a song at their funeral when they die. I always say, yes. Weddings are more fun to sing at.

I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
    Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they're blowing

    As free as the wind
    Hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
    Has no way of turning

More than this, you know there is nothing
More than this, tell me one thing
More than this, ooo, there is nothing

It was fun for a while
There was no way of knowing
Like a dream in the night
Who could say where we're going?

    No care in the world
    Maybe I'm learning
Why the sea on the tide
    Has no way of turning

More than this, you know there's nothing
More than this, tell me one thing
More than this, no there's nothing

    More than this, nothing
    More than this
    More than this, nothing

I cannot believe how sad this song still makes me feel (after reading
all your stories; Gabe, there were tears before you even got to the end
about the child possibly dying, and I am typing through tears right now).

This was the song that was in my heart when I got together with the man
I married a few days following a still birth, after already having had a
first trimester miscarriage, and then having another miscarriage soon after.

My life fell apart pretty hard after that.

Yes, several. There are some that sting less and I can listen to, and some... I have to immediately turn off. Which I hate, because I simply adore music and it pulses past my eardrums and into my soul and latches on.

Without association we wouldn't have memories, but sometimes I wish I could just immediately disassociate myself from two connections if they're painful. Same thing with certain objects, smells, places. But I guess if it was easy to do that, then it would be easy to lose the good associations, too, so I get it.

Though just now saying that, seems like even bad association *could* be a way to remember something and either realize you're different now/in a different place and to remind you of a lesson you may have learned, however painful.
