I'm thinking about having a part time job, so who has some great ideas about being self employed? This is just brainstorming, so feel free to joke, or talk about some successful business ventures you have done. I'm just kicking the idea around. I have a cousin who started a business at her home, but worked a full time job in the day. Now, she has put her notice to quit her day job, to work full time on her own business, and she is doing quite well. I know it's not easy!

I've tried many times to be self employed, but never managed to make it profitable. Sure enjoyed it though, something amazing about being self employed. I heard Colonel Sanders failed many many times before he did well selling fried chicken.

Thanks in advanced for any humorous or encouraging comments!

That's basically a taxi driver. Nice one NoNameMcgee! That is pretty cool app or program they have. Have you used uber before and do you find it cheaper than a checkered cab?

Some jobs I thought about was real estate agent or mortgage broker for side jobs. Considering the internet makes most things accessible to everyone, there is really endless opportunity for self employment. Most people want more. More more more! People want more services and more goods. Many times they don't even care about quality, as long as it's cheap, and easily accessible. Look at all the fast food chains! Fast food is not about quality generally, it's about a cheap meal that is quick and easy.

One person from church said, people need to eat, and need a place to live. Everything else is a luxury.

I saw this one show about a man who would do just about anything to make a buck for his family. He would listen to anyone for a buck. Just go out on the street and have a sign that said, I will listen to you for a dollar. He said, it's amazing people just need someone to talk to. He had pranks like, animals must be clothed, it's a disgrace. Actually when on t.v. and said something like, it's obscene for animals to go around naked. One lady sent in $100,000 for the cause, he returned the check, because it was really a prank. lol

there are 4 options

the cheaper 2 are much cheaper than a cab

the 3rd one is a little cheaper

and the most expensive is comparable

the kind of car you have

determines how many qualifications your car gets

a close friend of mine does uber

makes from 900 to 1200 weekly

and chooses his own hours

Great ideas mochi. Buying and selling products, people do that all day! Thanks for the kind note, it's great to be in a situation where it's not an emergency. I believe in looking for opportunity, not following the status quo.

That looks like a living wage to me NoNameMcgee! You get to stay in your area, unlike many truck drivers, and choose your own hours. Free time yes! Hmmm.. Not bad! A few down sides, wear and tear on your vehicle, and your picking up hitch-hikers.

Only if you want to be taken seriously. :D

I personally believe some of the best makeup artists could be men (and yes, straight men), if there wasn't such a stigma against it. I once asked a (straight!) male with an artistic eye to do my makeup and it wasn't half-bad. With some practice, I bet he could have been better at it than me!

Plus, think of all the women you'd meet...

Alas. The last time I sold anything door-to-door was some kind of fundraiser when I was a kid.

(In all seriousness... Best wishes to you, and keep us posted.)

This doesn't look half bad. I will keep it in the back burner. Your friend does pretty good driving uber, sounds like a great job to have if you like to surf. Check the surf report, than make money the uber way! This is why I like bouncing ideas off of people, everyone has their own perspective.

You'll only have to work at being an Avon lady until you've met enough ladies/have built up enough files to set up your own dating/matchmaking service.

Not only can you set the ladies up on a promising first date (for a nominal fee, of course), but then you can then sell them all the products they'll need to pretty and primp themselves for said dates.

It's a total win-win situation!!! :p

Not only will you be able to set them up with a great guy (hopefully your friends fit the bill :D), but you'll be able to make sure they'll be beautiful when they show up (that could go for both your female clients, and your male friends .)

E-Harmony's got nothin' on you! :D

I do independent computer work: Computer and peripheral setups, tune ups, software and hardware configuration, virus removals, phone repairs, etc.

The freelance stuff is inconsistent, but a single side job can make me more $ in 2 - 3 hours than my full time job can in an 8 hour day, despite that I tend to undercharge people.

I've gotten my feet wet with an MLM company once, too, and there's good money in that if you stick with it. I'll be looking at Lyft, and maybe Uber, soon.

That's rad! Your tired of the corporate grind maybe as well. Yeah tech work seems like there is money to be made. My friend got a Master's Degree in Computer Science and now makes about $85k a year. The local computer shop charges about 85$ to fix my pc when it goes bad, which seems worth it since it does take about 2-3 hours to do a system reboot. I can do it, but it is so boring and tedious. That reminds me, I need to back up my hard drive..lol Thanks for talking shop!

What about taxes? Being self employed and having good records on cost and profit is another thing to consider. So, you managed to keep a float working for yourself, now it's tax time! NOOOOO! I lost all my receipts and can't find them, now what?

No receipts, no deductions. Probably get audited and get hit with a large tax bill. Being self-employed requires tremendous discipline and substantial calculated risks to even have a chance to become profitable and sustainable.

Yup, that sounds about right. Life is always about taking chances, that's the beauty of it. The real trick is managing risk and having an exit plan.

What about part time jobs that are faith based that would generate money? Is that the wrong mind set? Many people in ministry make money. RoboOp has the Christian social media covered. I would hope that most would love to increase the Kingdom while they work.

I believe that you can serve God no matter what your job is or where you happen to be.
