Reminds me of Captain Natey in Catch 22. He purposefully makes himself bored so as to slow his perception of time, thereby increasing his life expectancy.

I don't think Heller intended the reader to take it this way, but I walked away thinking some things that make life shorter and momentarily unpleasant also make it worth living.
Yup

PS: Don't hate me for saying this, but ... I think that book is really, really, really over- rated.
It keeps repeating itself endlessly

Yes, this is what I was trying to express. Thanks for clarifying it for me. At least exciting, yet unpleasant experiences are not boring. There is something to the "live fast, die young, leave a good looking corpse" mentality.

I think that is a corner of human nature, almost a basic need, that the modern world has chosen to ignore in pursuit of all the other basic needs and creature comforts.

A great book on this is Chesterton's Napoleon of Notting Hill.

I don't like that book either to be honest.

That's the only passage I found in any way profound. And to find it profound, I had to ignore the context.

Yup

I am single because I look for love, acceptance, support approval outwardly. I think I have a lot of emotional wounds I question my abilities and worth a lot.I'm 34 I feel so old afraid I'll never find man that will love me

I'm single because it's no good trying to like or love somebody else when I don't like or love myself.

I'm single because I punish each new woman for the transgressions of previous women in my life.

I'm single because I have accepted the fact that every woman, no matter how virtuous and honorable she might claim to be, would cuckold me eventually.

I'm single because I've never been attracted to anyone and have always settled for the women who chose to pursue me.

I'm single because even if I were to someday be attracted to someone, I'm too big a coward to introduce myself and I think I'd just be mocked and humiliated if I were to try.

I posted before, but I will again.I am single because when I compare single, and marriage, single comes out ahead, and I told my friend if it were 100 years ago I might get married, but I do not know about today, which to me marriage is not exciting enough, and it becomes routine after a which that is a drag, and I have a hard time being confined like a bird in a cage, and my mental health would be better being single, for it is more peaceful, and serene.

Sure there is benefits to being married, but being single outweighs that,at least for now.

If a woman gives me 2 days a week in marriage, and that is it,I will be the best husband ever, but it is hard for me to do the 24/7 of marriage, but if I decide to get married, then it would not be difficult to do 24/7 once I agreed to it.

Single by choice. In this modern age we live in today, I think being single is the best option.
