Hey Everyone,

Lately I've just wanted to do a few simple demographic (why did I just try to spell that as "demon-graphic"?!) checks here in the good ol' Singles forum.

Now I realize that someone who's 25 and has had 4 relationships is probably in a very different place than someone who's 45 and has had 4 relationships, so I'm going to make an attempt to reflect that in the poll (which, like the other one I just wrote, will be multiple-choice and anonymous, so no one can see your answers.)

To be honest, I'm not quite sure how to set it up in a way that asks what I'm really trying to ask with this poll. It won't be perfect, so if anyone else here has experience with writing polls on this site (I'm looking at you, Zero! :p) and has suggestions on how to improve upon this in the future, feel free to PM me with suggestions. (You really have to have tried writing polls here in order to know some of the in's and out's of how to work with them, and I would encourage anyone with an idea to go ahead and give it a try! :))

I'm also always interested in how the definition of relationships has changed over time--even the term "relationship" doesn't seem have a standard, universal definition in today's world.

Some people will have a 6-month period of contact with someone they only talk to online and/or on the phone (and never meet in real life) but will count that as a relationship; others will spend every day with someone in person for months and yet never define it as being relationship material.

Please feel free to tell us how you personally define a relationship. Here are a few suggestions for topics of discussion:

* Do internet "relationships" count if you never meet the person in real life?

* Does spending a lot of time with someone in real life count as a relationship, or does it have to cross over into holding hands/kissing, etc., in order to "count"?

* What is your personal definition of a "real" relationship, or at least, one that you would "count" as qualifying for this poll?

As always, please give me a few minutes to write the poll... and thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts. :)

I've never had a boyfriend . I've never been on a date. I have however had very close long distsnce male friends. We never had a title though since we never met.

I'm not sure how I'd define a "real" relationship. Not all the women in my list were long-term associations. Two were wives, two were "kinda" longtime girlfriends. Two were short term "just kind of dating" deals. One was a mutual infatuation that both of us were too scared to see it go anyplace, and the remaining was a mutual respect and admiration that we didn't want to sully by making it a physical relationship.

None. The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters.

Well I don't feel so out of place now. I also have had no relationships. Just never bothered looking for a girlfriend.

That's not on the poll though. I'm guessing this thread is starting out in a way Kim did not really expect. Not the way I expected either. I thought I'd be the only one here who has never so much as been on a date before.

Almost 30 and none. But I'm very reclusive and I lack self-confidence so that might have something to do with it.

Wow... It looks like I missed the boat to my own party. :p

It's looking like the category with the biggest number of people are those who haven't had relationships...

I guess I had assumed that demographic would be covered in the other poll, since a major section of the choices was for people who have always been single.

Very sorry if anyone feels excluded from this poll--it certainly wasn't intentional, and, lesson learned! (But I hope those who find an answer that suits them will still keep voting and posting.) :)

Hmm...is there some sort of rulebook as to what defines a relationship? Do I need to bring in the Supreme Court to determine "relationshipality"?

("And after much deliberation, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 against of Jane Doe being his girlfriend. Chief Justice Roberts' majority opinion states that DC and JD didn't see each other enough, overriding a Court of Appeals decision. Sonia Sotomayor's minority opinion states verbal technicality.")

No.

I think once you go on an explicit date or something that is self-evidently not just a friendly outing, then after the second one is when you're in "a relationship."

Male-female, exclusive, multiple dates. It's weird trying to pin down an exact definition because mine have been very amorphous where we are both interested but nothing significant enough happens to where I know how to count them. For the most part. I'm just gonna put 1-4 for simplicity.

That's a really good working definition.

You've thought this through more than most of us.

Reps to you!

No.
