Conversation? We don't need no conversation, just get me started talking about music. I can talk about computers or food or chocolate for hours and I can talk about music for DAYS straight no problem just mention anything about music and I'll talk so much your eyes will glaze over trying to read it all but it's no problem I can supply all the chat conversation you need cause there's just so much to talk about with music...

    Hush Lynx.

Six hours and nobody saying "Sure, let's meet up" yet? Tsk tsk!

I have choir practice Thursday night (USA night) but if y'all decide to meet up I can be in for a couple hours before and then for a couple hours after. Friday night is clear and I'm not working at all Saturday.

Ok, and here's where I have to give my deep, dark confession.

I always find it fascinating that different people are more comfortable communicating in different ways. For whatever reason, I could pretty much write 24/7, almost every day of the week... But I can't handle a chat more than once every couple of weeks, at most. I enjoy them, but can only take so much because:

    1. I'm trying so hard to pay attention to people talking and typing at the same time. I know that in our last chat, I missed my chance to speak on the mic at least 3 times because I was trying to keep up with all the written communication as well--making sure people who didn't have mics were greeted and acknowledged, as well as keeping up with who was speaking, along with a couple of people who were trying to PM me at the same time.

It's all good, but just kind of overwhelming.

    2. In my experience, chats usually dissolve into 2 or 3 people constantly on the mic who will then dominate the conversation with ONLY what they want to talk about, and when it comes down to this, I don't stay long. (And I don't mean this as put-down to anyone who loves chat, but just as an observation and explanation as to why, in most cases, I can't do chats night after night.)

This is one of my problems when it comes to connecting with people in real life, too--they want to tell me all about what they're interested in, but never once ask me about what I'm into or what I like. And even when I do try to talk about, they're bored to tears, and quickly turn the conversation back to themselves again. Sometimes I stay and listen in order to be polite... but the past few years, I've been ditching those situations in order to seek more truly interactive experiences.

I know it seems hypocritical with as much as I write threads, but I hope it's also noticed that my communication is almost always geared towards getting OTHER people to start talking, especially those who have never really been given a chance to talk. I share a lot in writing because it's the only way I seem to be able to coax others into writing about themselves.

This is why I could never write a book or a blog, as much as I appreciate people telling me I should. I always see the purpose of my communication as a way of getting people to interact with me and with each other, and if that's not happening, I'll turn my efforts elsewhere.

This would be my main purpose in a chat as well--to make sure the conversation is as evenly distributed as possible and that hopefully everyone who wants to share is able to (or is coaxed/encouraged into doing so.) I can admit first hand that I'd mostly be there to try to break up any monopolies on the mic in order to try to make sure as many people as possible are talking.

I can be interested in anything another person is into--as long as it's genuinely reciprocated back to me. And if that's not happening, for me, the next best thing is to try to get as many people to share as possible in order to throw out a wide variety of ideas.

    3. Lastly, hey, let's face it: I'm pretty boring. Unless it's in writing, I actually DO run out of things to say rather quickly, and certainly wouldn't have anything very interesting to tell everyone night after night.

And for me, after a while, it becomes more about presence--like, let's get some activity going or let's both work on our separate hobbies but keep each other company... which, unfortunately, is really hard to achieve that with only an online chat.

But I'll definitely be open to trying to set up more chats in the future, and hopefully it will be with as many of our peeps here in Singles as possible.

If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.

I can relate to that, Seoulsearch. That was what I meant when the room gets noisy....

I have attended online classes and been in numerous skypemeetings and I teach online classes on skype every week. And to make this work, it is needed some guidelines. Last week it came in someone that "lives" in the chatrooms, that have payed the subscription and could speak non stop. Also when another has the mic. It was impossible to get the chance for a non subscriber to get the mic. It is therefore needed a good moderator, that will give the word to everyone, so they get a chance to present themselves, at least. A moderator can also set the topic of the debate or to lead it in a fruitful direction.

I am afraid this will never be possible in the Lounge. Perhaps in the Singles room, but then it comes back to that you have to pay a subscription, and it would then be better to rent an own room. So... I still vote for skype or hangouts. Hangouts would be easy, we could just publish a link here that you can click on to join. Manytimes the sound works better on Hangouts, too.

So... perhaps a new poll is in place, or do we just leave it and stick to the form of communication we do best, to type, like and post whenever we feel like it.

So that's it Kim. You're Martha! Too busy playing hostess to enjoy the party.

Chat does scroll fast sometimes, and people who are unaccustomed to it can find it hard to keep up with what was said. If you hang out in chat regularly you get used to it. I was keeping up with chat and playing UFO: Aftershock on a different computer. (Though it WOULD help to be able to make the text window larger... We can't hold nearly the amount of text onscreen that any standard IRC client could show. Doesn't help that when somebody is on mic or cam, that picture or video blocks part of the text.)

Personally I try to make sure to greet people when they come in, and I scan chat to see if there's anything being talked about that I have anything to say about. If chat is dead, I start a topic about chocolate. If chat is monopolized by one or two people I get bored and pay attention to other windows or another computer, and finally log out.

So tonight (Friday night) is gonna be taken up by an unexpected but welcome family dinner. Uncle Fred's birthday yesterday. Unwritten family rule is, any time somebody in the family has a birthday we gotta have a family dinner.

I'm off work and not doing anything constructive, useful or socially redeeming tomorrow. Anybody up for a Singles meeting in the Lounge?

My school work is in a holding pattern until I hear something, so I'll pop into the chat room for a bit. Same as last time - muted and sans mic, but I'll try to follow along for a bit.
Some days, I feel like removing the SIM from my phone, breaking it in pieces, tossing the phone in a wood chipper, grabbing my bug-out bag, leave everyone without saying a word, and just going ghost for the rest of my life.

That which doesn't kill you gives you a lot of unhealthy coping mechanisms and a dark sense of humor.

Central Standard Time, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. I will look up your time zone parameters when I get to my house and a real computer. I need to wash the dog and spray weeds around the house sometime tomorrow, so I want to know when other people will be in chat to schedule chores around that.

Sorry for the delay. Yesterday got a bit hectic.

Central is UTC -6, according to the great, all-knowing Google. So UTC +8, I'll be here sometime between 20:00 (8pm) and 11:00 the next day.

Well I've been doing other things in the meantime. Playing UFO: Aftershock, eating this and that, giving the dog a bath... Dog wasn't happy about it and neither was I, but he smells much better now.

    And you're next, right?

After all, we have to make sure you're presentable when I get you matched up.

Sorry folks... but after seeing the vast evidence in the last few threads that Lynx actually WOULD like a girlfriend...

I've been trying help... I even have someone in mind (and no, it's not me, LOL!)

But... As usual, he's being a bit uncooperative. Grrr.
