Default Medieval Times, Part 1-- What Does a Modern-Day Knight in Shining Armor Look Like?

    Good morning, Lords and Ladies.

I have been thinking about this topic for some time, but was freshly inspired by a regular poster who said, despite having been burned in a past relationship, that he is still determined to "slay someone's dragon", which I thought was phenomenal.

Back when I was about 19, my then-boyfriend and I were snowmobiling with friends on a dark, snowy night. We had ventured into a dimly-lit field, and because the only light was from a very distant street lamp, my boyfriend (who was driving) didn't see a wire fence until the very last minute.

Although he duly tried to avoid it with a sharp swerve, the force of the turn smacked me straight into the fence and I went flying. As I sat dazed in the snow, he immediately came running... and began to check my hands very thoroughly. I didn't quite understand at first, but then it dawned on me that he had seen that the brunt of the impact had been on my hands and arms, and, being in school to become a future EMT, he was making sure I didn't have any broken bones or injuries.

I can remember thinking in that moment, here was my knight in shining armor, because he made me feel safe and protected.

I have heard many guys state that they would like to be someone's Knight in Shining Armor someday, which I think is a most valiant endeavor (not to mention, irresistibly romantic <3), but what would a modern-day Knight in Shining Armor look like?

    * Would he be chivalrous? And how do you define modern chivalry? Does it just mean he holds open the door for a woman?

    * What, exactly would make one a knight in shining armor today? Is he someone who goes around rescuing everyone around him?

    * Guys, what would make you feel like a knight in shining armor, and why would it be appealing to you? Tell us about an event that made you feel like a knight in shining armor, and why.

    * Ladies, at what times in your life do you feel you've been rescued by an honorable knight?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

I also plan to write a second thread about what modern-day dragons a damsel (or anyone else) might face, but I thought it would be more interesting to kick off with this one first.

    Ready? Set? Joust!!!

    A modern day Knight.

I think of John McClane, working his way through the Nakatomi tower. Taking out former East German commandos, who are robbing the place, just so he can save the woman he loves.

I reckon with this new generation of males, we will have to settle with them rescuing the princess on a mobile game app.

I guess if a guy helps a lady out, like stopping to help her with a flat tire, that could be a chivalrous act.

I would really like to slay a dragon though.

Chivalry is a quality of considering the needs of someone else and demonstrating courage, kindness and honor through it.

I definitely don’t need to be rescued. I was already rescued by God. I already have a hero in my father.

This is important because I have developed a sense of self worth and respect for myself. There are too many losers out in this world who think they can woo a woman by pretense of ‘caring’.
There are so many stories of young women, some in their teens, being lured by older, predator-like men and vice versa.

If a woman respected herself, she would not deal with the louts of this world - the bad tempered, abusive, steeped in vices kind of man.
She would not deal with the emotional stringers of this world, jerking her around on every whim.
Sure, he rescued her from a dragon.

Some women are in precarious situations in life that might need a James Bond-like man to step in. The rest of the world is caught up in their own prisons of the modern world.

A man can be chivalrous when he shows he cares. I believe it is in the little things. It's when he walks you back home in the night, the other way from his own house because he wants you to be safe.
It's when you are walking on the sidewalk and he gently moves you to the side, away from the road.

It's when he texts you, because he had a feeling you might be upset. It's when he picks you up from the airport without being asked. It is when he brings you snacks and food even when you are mad at each other.

When it is super cold outside and you are bundled up inside, eating ramen noodles, you get a call - ‘Hey, I am at a food truck, what would you like?’... then you see a knight in an ordinary man's clothes.

All these tiny incidents are actual things men have done for me in my life. These little moments have stayed with me far more than anything.

What I want to know is, where were all those dragons coming from? Couldn't those knights hunt up a few breeding grounds and mount a concerted attack? >.>

To rescue a damsel, the damsel must first have a problem that requires rescue. Modern women are far too self-sufficient to require such. Mind you, I'm not saying that's a bad thing... unless those same women are waiting for a knight in shining armor.

And by the way, shining armor is like pristine western gear. If the cowboy looks like he just came out of the clothing store, he might just be for show. Same with that shining armor. If a knight is any good, he either just got a new set of armor or his armor has a few dings in it.

Or he might be a politician... or a salesman... or a lawyer (same breed, different colours, though a few lawyers are smart).

I had to smile at this. Not as a cut to the guys of this generation, but because people are so used to feeling like a "hero" via entertainment... yet in real life, has our society lost the ability, or even knowledge, of even basic manners, let alone taking care of someone as a spouse?

In my childhood state, holding the door open for the next person behind you was just what most people did for each other.

In the current state I live in, I can be walking 3 feet behind someone, and they will let the door slam in my face right after they've entered it. What really surprised me is that I've noticed it even more among the senior citizens, because I thought they were the ones who would exhibit "good old-fashioned manners" more than anyone.

I loved your entire post, Rachel, but this part really stood out to me: "Then you see a knight in ordinary man's clothes..." Absolutely love this.

And besides... What woman wouldn't love a man who helps her slay the dragon of hunger?

And, I'm guessing, he'll also have a few battle scars as well.

Maybe part of the problem is that we all think we're looking for someone in a perfectly impeccable uniform... But in reality, they're just keeping all their scars covered up.

Some of us "Damsels" have scars too...and I would hope that my one day Knight doesn't mind them...
My Knight would be kind, loving, and faithful. He would be a Godly man who would lead his family to follow in the will of God...As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

This is what the millennial knight looks like...

Clean shaven, waxes his eyebrows, gets highlights, experiments with a tiny bit of lip color, grows hair longer than his father ever did, ready for a selfie, has to have the newest iphone, loads of debt and thinks he's better than anyone else. I really don't know why I'm single...millennial knights are a huge catch!

Personally, it doesn't really appeal to me in the sense of having someone swoon over me for heroics. I'm not saying that character trait is wrong - just that it's not mine. I prefer to help anonymously if possible. Once though I remember telling someone that I was praying for her, and she had a reaction along those lines. But I tend to deflect, perhaps feeling as though I'm a distraction from what's really important.

I'd rather help the traveler on the road than the princess in the castle... if that makes sense.

I don’t know about Millennials or Gen Xers, and I sure don’t need rescuing. But I wouldn’t mind being swept up on the horse of a Baby Boomer Knight to find fun and adventure!

I didn’t see a temple in the city because the Lord God All-Mighty and the Lamb are its Temple. The city didn’t have need for the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the Glory of God gave it light; the Lamb is the Light.

To me it's less about heroics and more about being sensitive and thoughtful . Discernment is a very attractive trait. Also... he is willing to buy me an alpaca.

Is this really too much to ask ?
If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.
