Default Valentine's day...... is it a sham?

As singles awareness day approaches....... I wonder who is behind celebration of wealth distribution. Is it Big Chocolate, Big Florist, Big Greeting Cards, National Association of Restaurants, or something more sinister?

After work, I headed to Wally World, first time I've been there in a year. I got some socks that are quiting on me. I walk in to see no less then 5 aisles devoted to the celebration of love. This is when I remember the day is fast approaching, and I have two little ones. What kind of father would I be, if I didn't get them something?

When I was married, every year, I would get my wife a stuffed lion. Anyone who knows me, would see how the lion matches my identity. It was kind of cool thing, unfortunately if I ever got married again, I'd have to come up with some tradition that is way better. Going to be hard to top.

I was wondering if anyone on here was the kind to buy Valentine's day, or to make it. Is this a sham, pushed upon us?
What kind of Valentine's day traditions do y'all have? What would y'all expect on Valentine's day from a lover? What do y'all have going on the 14th?

I'm supposed to be off that day. I may share some grilled salmon with my cat Callie.

This is what I got from Wal-Mart for the kids.20180206_234820.jpg

I saw this on the interweb today. Kinda tickled me. How many ladies would melt over a chicken nugget Valentine?

Yeah I'd take the nugget one with great appreciation.

Even though I've technically been single every Valentines day of my life, I actually really enjoy the holiday. I like to get something little for my Mom and Dad and brother, my nieces and nephews, the 2 disabled girls I work with, my sister and if I want to myself.. lol

Honestly I really just like giving to others. I want people to feel special and loved , so I'm all for a holiday to do so. I know it's supposed to be about romance and couples, but that's just not what it's about for me.
If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.

Last year I sent flowers to a man that I had waited for for too long and he rejected them (as well as me). This year I have ordered a nice, hopefully a surprise, to a very special person, and I hope they will not be rejected. I am quite sure the favor is not returned. I have a dream of some day having flowers delivered to my door, too. I am quite positive it is not going to happen this year either, if not my dogs have hacked in to my pay pal account.

Sham? It is commercialism and shallow for sure. But it is good to remember the friends that are special to us. It doesn't need to be shallow and pricy. Just a kind word or a card would make a person's day. And it doesn't need to be February 14th to do so.

Valentines Day is a total sham. A ridiculously lucrative one.

I don’t really celebrate it. I don’t really Not celebrate it, though. It’s just kind of...there. Sometimes I make something for my husband, or write something. Sometimes not. Sometimes my husband gives me a fancy coffee maker or my favorite chocolate, sometimes not. I do help my kids make cards for their grandparents, though.

Honestly, I never knew Valentine's Day was kind of a sweethearts holiday until I was unreasonably old. For our family, it has always been a day to show love an appreciation to siblings, parents, and children. Mum and Dad usually give us candy of some kind; the "kids" have done different things in the past, and not everyone does Valentine's every year, but I think I've gotten a Valentine from each of my siblings...candy, stuffies, toys, cards, DTY things, baked goods, what have you!

Usually, I get down all the card making stuff and make everyone a personalized card. I'm giving that a rest this year, in favor of THIS, which looks amazing. I'm hoping I'm not biting off more than I can chew baking-wise lol.

Valentine's Day is no sham...but like every other holiday, it has been shamefully commercialized.
“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.”

I think so. I feel myself dry heaving at jewelry commercials anymore. I'm so bitter and jaded that I need to surround myself with cats just to be relevant.

It may be a scam for manufacturers to monetize off of couples' love but on the other hand, if I had a Valentine, I would love surprising her with a gift!

One day while I was driving in my car, tuned in to CBC Radio, they were covering the story of the woman who was behind starting mother's day. After it quickly turned into a commercial monster that it is to this day, she worked tooth and nail for the rest of her life trying to stop it, to no avail, and the flower companies, forever in her debt, even though she was against them, paid for her funeral, since she died broken and penniless.

Valentine 's day is basically a Roman Catholic invention In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation all because of his stand for Christian marriage in a polygamous, sexually immoral society. The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius' daughter were, "from your Valentine." Thus, he inspired today's romantic missives

I don't have anyone to share Valentine's Day with. Growing up I had healthy experiences with it. I don't see anything wrong with buying your boyfriend or girlfriend a gift.

    Keep it simple.
I'm not a bad guy. I'm just misunderstood.

Galatians 6:14 - But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Once upon a time when I was young and handsome
I actually got a real Valentine's Card from an unknown admirer.
I was the Works Manager for a small rural town and someone
put this card in envelope on my work desk.

No name; just a declaration of unrequited love.
Never ever found out who it was from; much to my
    wife's delight.

Even though it's been 28 years I am still desiring to
know my admirer from afar... hello, do you still care for me???

Naaaaah. I saw the movie, in which all the actors spoke in Latin.
So it must be true. It was at an arts films festival back in the 70s.

Valentine was in the Roman army and they tied him to a pillar and fired arrows
into him because he refused to submit to the homosexual love of his commander.
Filmed in Sicily I think. Great scenery.

Either way it I a story of a Christian young man upholding virtue against depravity.

My bf and I agreed not to do a darn thing for each other. I don't like Valentine's Day because it's expected that if you are in a relationship to go out for dinner or a movie and be all mushy and romantic. Well, I view romance as an unexpected gesture that society does not push on people. So romance should not have anything to do with an organized holiday where it's expected. In fact isn't that what Anniversarys are for?(which, our one year is next month and I think we are gonna see "Death Wish" how more romantic can we get?) Granted, I'm going to bake him some cookies today, but I also make things for him quite a bit.

I generally endorse these days that bring focus on Moms, dad's, marriages, love etc.
Yet thanks to human nature there is always a downside.
One is the manipulation to have people spend or overspend.

The other, and more important reason these holidays can be a negative is that they may put the notion in people's minds that it's a once a year thing to treat your mom or dad or husband or wife special.
