The whole business of psychological treatment is to make men and women forget themselves,to become interested in something else, to this self interest to some thing else. It is this morbid, pathetic interest in self that makes us so miserable. That is why we break down in life; that is why we fall when tribulation comes- self- pity. Why should this be happening to me? I ask. I am looking to myself all the time and because of that everything is exaggerated. Now Paul does not do that because he is looking for Christ and the glory of Christ and the gospel is what he is concerned about. It is not, why am I chained to these men? or what I am suffering or enduring! His one concern is that with all boldness,as always,so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be life or by death.
Clearly, the man has lost himself and therefore there can be self pity,no sympathizing with himself,no feeling sorry for himself and going down hopelessly before it all. No, he has a healthy altitude towards himself. He says, Iam in Christ,Iam a citizen of the kingdom and it is not self that matters, it is the kingdom,it is the king. He is so concerned about this that he is emancipated out of this whole vortex of morbidity and unhappiness that is such a curse in life at the present time.
By Dr . Martin LLoyd-Jones.
My beloved friends, shall I ask you that simple question? Have you suffered one of these trials? How have you come through it all? You know what happened to you, the heart knows it's own bitterness but I ask you, are you like Paul? Are you free from this grumbling and querying the love of God? Are you sure of God and are you right in your altitude towards yourself? Have you become lost in Christ, which is the secret of it all?

Actually psychologists don't use distractions any more. They used to - if somebody was depressed or just plain bored they would try to get the person interested in hobbies to distract them from whatever they were depressed about.

These days though, they just use pills. At least it has a slightly higher success rate. But it's still just a planned distraction.

The problem has always been that life without God is ultimately pointless and futile. The reason it has become so depressing lately is because more people have more free time to actually think about their lives and realize this. Back when living took more work, a person didn't have nearly as much time for contemplation - gotta get back to work, gotta survive. In the last century or so we have machines and now computers doing much of our work for us, so we have a lot more time to think about why we are actually trying to stay alive... and some people are realizing they don't really have a good reason to try to stay alive. Leisure has a dark side.

Not sure I agree that technology has given men more time to think. It seems it has given them more distractions, )and at a mere touch of the finger.)

Pharaoh, inspired by Satan, tried to deal with the Jews wanting to go outside of the could try to worship by creating more work for them. His thought was, they just have too much free time and that's why they want to go. So I'll distract them from this desire by demanding more work from them so they won't have time to think about it.

Satan's tactic hasn't changed really. Its still an attempt to distract.

In theory, it makes sense that technology would give men more time to think, but in reality, technology has just created more distractions to take his mind off serious questions. He can check his mail, play games, watch movies and videos, chat, Facebook and amuse himself with every app imaginable.

This was driven home to me by a young child complaining of how bored he was and his mother asking if he could use my kindle to play games. So bored was a sort of code word for: without anything to distract.
