Hey everyone!!

I've been gone from CC for a bit and as much as I'd LOVE to be able to tell you a cool story as my reason, such as witnessing a big shakedown and having to be put into The CC Witness Protection Program (thereby, having to change my username and online identity :D), all I can say is that I've been taking care of some rough patches in life (we're all having them, huh?) as well as going on a 3-day fast with a friend.

Although I am not good at fasting from food (though I did cut back considerably, living on small meals such as a glass of milk or bowl of cereal), the main thing I believed God wanted me to give up was... *gulp* being online. GASP!!! No, Lord, please! Not the internet, no!! I am truly ashamed to admit how hard that really was. I kept thinking, "But what if I get an email from so-and-so..." and I love using the net as online library to research various topics of interest, such as recipes and cooking sites.

However, I've also learned that the best way to know if you've developed an unhealthy relationship with something is to try to give it up for a period of time!! Three days... I know that sounds pathetic, but the last day before the fast ended, I was literally pacing the floor, trying to keep myself from firing up the trusty old computer.

BUT, I also have to be blatantly honest in that, during that time, and with the help of a little bout of insomnia, I was able to finish two books I'd started weeks ago and kept meaning to pick up again, read six pages in my Bible study that I'd put off from the week before, went through an entire stack of paperwork on my table, and started on a pair of shorts I'm trying to make for my Mom that I started... embarrassingly... last summer.

I'm always thinking to myself, "If only I had more time!" Obviously, God is telling me I DO have time... I'm just misdirecting it... and at the end of the three days, I was ready to repent.

Now, I know that for some people, giving up online access is impossible, because their careers and livelihood depend on it... but for the rest of us internet "hobbyists"... I just wanted to ask the question:

What could you be doing or accomplishing if you spent less time online?

Ive been unplugged in the past, by choice, and what usually ends up happening is that I spend a LOT more time outside. I love it outside, but since I live in a metro-ish area, and am always online, I don't go camping/fishing/road tripping/walking/ hiking/biking/etc like I used to. When I move back down south, I'll probably be back on dial-up innernetz, so I'll be detoxed pretty quickly. I'll also be out in the sticks (hence the dial-up only), so I'll be a whole lot more country. Looking forward to that.

I'm either doing crazy stuff, or online. There isn't a whole lot in between. I don't even watch TV.

I don't feel like I'm missing anything because being online saves me money.

There are times when I certainly do have to intentionally back away from the Internet. Usually when I feel my backside going numb. :) My last fast was 5 years long. haha I usually just pop off and on a couple of times during the day to clear my workaholic's brain and maybe for an hour or so to relax before I go to sleep.

I'm very involved in my church and do have a lot of people from work/church/family that I like to spend time with. I teach dance one night a week as a fun way to stay in shape and I just started leading a Weds night womens Bible study. I also spend a LOT of time on my music. I would like to take some poli sci classes (didn't get my fill in college haha) and learn French in the near future.

I love to travel and see new things, which I like to combine with my love for photography. I also am a huge sewing/needlepoint person because it's hard for me to just sit still and watch tv sometimes. Plus, it can be very theraputic to stab needles into something when you're stressed! LOL And there's always my love for target shooting, which I don't get to do nearly as often as I'd like.

I love to learn/try new things constantly, so the Internet isn't ALL bad. I can so often combine my interest in the Net with my other interests, so I think that keeps my attitude toward the whole thing a little more balanced. Or maybe I'm just assuming I'm balanced (twitch twitch)

Mainly, I love reading the thoughts of other people. This is what I love best about the Internet, especially these forums.

I've given up the TV, so I do research and chat on the computer instead. I live alone out in the country and have found it hard making new friends. Christians are not the majority in New Zealand. I like the church I go to and look forward to talking to people at the church. Unfortunately I sometimes have a discernment that people do not see the real me and only see what they want in me. In todays world its hard to find givers and when you do you cherish them like gold.

I would continue writing. That is what my profession is. The internet just allows for my writing to reach so many more.

Haha...I had the 3 day fast aswell..unintentionally though..and it wasnt a proper break from it..i used my parents one to check emails lol , but the second day was a sunday and I felt closer to God somehow..also, I learnt alot of techniques on my keyboard and read and looked more deeply in my bible. I'll be honest...I read more of it when im not distracted by this thing. and i dont even think its the internet, i think its the area of social networking... maybe things would be different if it was a social networking fast lol? cos seoulsearch, you mentioned the thought of "what if so-and-so emailed me?" and maybe thats what keeps us here. But i dont know...I just think we'd be more like the old lifestyle fashionistas back in the day. haha

Kim,

I've actually not spent as much of my life wasting it away on the internet lately. I've been reading my bible more, reading Theology books, reading the classics, reading for my work, and reading in general. Once I stopped spending endless hours in front of a screen I found a new world! I was more surprised then a pig being served bacon! :O <---- (Like that guy, right there. Look at him. In't he cute?!)

Morbid, I know. I've also gone out and spent time with friends that aren't behind a screen! You can touch, smell, and taste them! You get the whole experience, whereas, when logged onto a piece of hardware we can only get the sight and sound of them. And still, not the full experience! I have been freed!

God Speed,

Berean.

Some friends you would rather not smell...and don't even get me started about taste.

If I were not on the internet I could probably find many other ways to waiste time. Here are 10:

1. watch tv/movie
2. stare at the wall
3. talk to myself
4. begin writing another book that I will never finish
5. twiddle my thumbs
6. count the hairs on my left forearm
7. go to the store and load up the shopping cart with things I like but cannot afford and then leave it there for the 16yr old know it alls to put it all back. (mwa haha!)
8. think about getting on the internet
9. unravel a fresh toilet paper roll, count the squares just to make sure they gave me all the sheets the package said they would
10. write a lengthy letter to Snuggle about how disappointed I am that my roll only had 217 quilted sheets instead of 220

Hiking in the Andes or Himalayas. White river water rafting. Playing basketball. Working on electronics (which I do anyway)
