FACT #2: It excludes men.
It empowers women and demoralizes men instead of being gender-neutral (a concept that ALL authors understand). For example it could have read, "A person's heart should be so...that their future mate has to..."
Exactly right, it's hard to know the original intent of the author but it's clear that many christian women take it in a highly favourable way and revel in the feeling of superiority.

It makes women feel like a prize but in a way that doesn't feel shallow and wrong and so it's almost giving license to indulge in ego, for me it evokes the image of an angelic woman standing on a mountain with some poor man scrambling in vein to try and catch her attention.

Among christian singles there's too much of an emphasis on repeatedly stating self worth and constantly drawing attention to the incredible value of a woman's heart etc......but scant mention of the value of a man's.......it's ego-mania in disguise.

More than anything like you I am just totally sick of reading it so often, it is really over used.

I can see what she was trying to say but the quote is vague. But as a single woman I love God, but I would love to have a husband who I could love :(

This qoute is so overused. I've never liked it. It's almost as bad as "Footprints" and in my opinion just as obnoxious.

I love the "Footprints" story, one of the stories strenghtening my own dependance in God. :)

I beleive it is most a matter of what people likes and not likes, or what words that talks to us. Some might like how this author expresses herself, and her words might inspire and strenghten them. Whilst for some others it might not. This quote didn't talk too much to me, yet it might talk to someone else's heart a lot more. ;) :)

"Footprints" is actually bible based (I made this large only so others will notice it, not trying to yell)

...I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
Isaiah 46:4 NIV

I could qoute Jeremiah, Habakkuk and the NT and debate the whole "Footprints is bible based". But it's really not worth the time.

The bottom line is what Bella Flor said: it's a matter of opinion.

"A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ that a man should have to seek Him first to find her."

IF I'm truly seeking Him, finding her would be an unnecessary distraction. Unless of course as this quote would imply that is the agenda, to derail honest God Seeking men into falling some smoke and mirrors love-trap.

Lets take the opposite perspective and see if it still works. {A Man's heart should be so hidden in Christ that a Woman should have to seek Him (Jesus) to find him (the guy).}

If you can't see the problem then i will do my best to elaborate. Church is a Community of Believers that hold their relationship with Christ to be first and foremost in their hearts and in their minds. This Community, holds prayer meetings, Praises every Sunday, shares a Sermon and does some form of out reach (ideally). However, if a person is in church just to find a Christian person to marry, I feel that is a bit disingenuous. A person cannot serve two masters, If a person is seeking God and settles for finding a woman, then he has made a terrible compromise.
Wow, disingenuous – yes, I looked the word up … it means to be lacking in frankness, candor, or sincerity.

I am sorry if I sound argumentative I just want clarify.

So this is as sincere as I can get. I was raised in the church, but it was through a personal struggle that I truly came to know God. I accept Jesus as my personal Savior and in turn I trust that God has a plan to make me prosper, not in the way of the world but through his will. It may appear dubious, but God calls on me to have that type of faith. I have my reasons for believing that God is working in my life. I am not a strong Christian but this is what I hold to be true.

The quote says “hidden in Christ” not the church. To me this is not one in the same. I have a relationship with Christ and the church is a meeting spot where I can fellowship and worship God with like minded people...I personally don’t go to church but that is not the point, a church is not the only place you can meet a person who loves God. I’m sorry - I fail to see the problem. If you are in Christ, would it be possible to serve another master?

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33

( I know this verse was used in this thread already, but it's so good, I'm going to use it again)

I think its funny when men say this. Us women have been excluded from so much over the years, and its not ok to exclude a man in a quote? Personally I see nothing wrong with the quote. I think its a good quote, and to me it means if a guy truly loves a girl he will treat her like Jesus treated women.

I am a man and I personally love this quote.. I believe that sometime we criticize the person rather than the quote itself.. What if Maya did bad things? I'm sorry but i am not perfect! I know no one else is other than my personal savior Jesus Christ! Also this quote doesn't necessarily exclude men because i take a lot from this also.. The first time i read this quote it opened my eyes to how I would try and date.. But really, for me this quote says that I should find a woman so in love with Jesus that I must seek him to find her. It's powerful if you take the message from it and not critique it so much.. I have learned to not critique things said because I am here to learn to be like my Savior and anything that is wrong will help is some way whether it be not how to do things or vice versa.. But there is nothing wrong with this quote and it's one of my favorites.. And i'm a guy so that doesn't matter at all.. God Bless and this is simply my opinion. I'm not trying to call out anyone. Comments would be nice

Do I like Special K? ...Maybe, or at least it certainly looks that way.

Do I Like Cinnamon Toast Crunch? You can bet your life on it! :)

"A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ that a man should have to seek Him first to find her." - Maya Angelou
After I read some commentss, I see the problem. It's spelled wrong!
It should be "A woman's heart should be brought in light with Christ so any godly man could see it shining"

I don't understand why guys would be offended by this... To me it is if anything an instruction to single women to be following Christ instead of trying to catch the attention of men....

My cereal point is this....

Seek God for God.

Seek Women for Women.

If you are seeking God but looking for a Woman.... There is a good chance you have a deep understanding of the term "Cognitive Dissonance"

Seek first the Kingdom of Heaven AND all these things will be added unto you. NOT Seek first the Kingdom for all the things that you want added to you.

What I'm NOT saying is that Women and God are incompatible but, what I am saying is that God understands our heart and our motivations. He knows what it is that we are looking to become and why we do the things that we do. My faith is not a means to my own ends, it is a gift from God to achieve His purpose with my life.
