We read/hear so much about what christians should and shouldn't be like. Rather than making assumptions or molding ourselves to the world's expectation of us, we should be looking at the One for whom and by whom we have been set apart. Our example is not one another, but Christ, Himself. So, can we look at what it truly means to be Christ-like?

What character traits do you see in Christ that we should strive to show forth through the power of the Holy Spirit in us? Please give either a scripture or situational example of Jesus displaying that/those trait(s).

Passion for showing love to people who least deserve it. I would call it charity but, no one would know what I was actually describing.

Just now I read a verse in Joshua and I realized that what I want, more than anything, is to be 'strong and courageous'.
It's funny how I have never thought of this trait in Jesus before. I always say I want to love my neighbors as myself, want to spread the good news and help those in need; but how can I do that if I don't love myself, can't help myself?

I am always so easily discouraged, always afraid, but Jesus was not like that. He was tempted and trialled and mocked, hated, betrayed; yet he always stayed strong. And here I am, feeling a little depressed because I don't think I am good enough...

I'm with you on that rin! Easily discouraged, but enouraged by the Lord - the ONLY lawgiver and judge. If you trust in the Lord and put your best foot forward in your walk with Him, HE will make all things work together for good:)

Be confident!

I think we over look the power of confidence. If Jesus was anything he was confident he knew who he was and he stood for it.

Jesus was sure of himself; even at the age of about 12, he was confident and smart enough to be teaching the priests in the temple.

LOVE - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

JOY - At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. Luke 10:21

PEACE - Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

KINDNESS - John 8 - 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

GOODNESS - While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. John 17:12

FAITHFULNESS - Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." Matthew 26:39

GENTLENESS - Matthew 10 - 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

SELF-CONTROL - Matthew 4 - 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]
7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e]11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

COURAGE - John 18 - When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
6As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
7Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: 9That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

FORGIVENESS - Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. Luke 23:34

Ever notice that the fruit of the Spirit, start with love. I say this because some scholars believe that the fruit of the Spirit is love, the rest are a definition of what love is. I believe it was David Jeremiah, who stated that when one compares Galatians 5:22-23 to I Corinthians 13 one finds that every word, Paul uses to define love/charity in I Corinthians 13, is a word that we define as a fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23.

But I agree thee are the most need characteristics needed in the church today.

I also think that the gift of discernment is a gift much needed in the Church today. For the Church in a bad way, can be to childish (Ephesians 4:14). For we are told that God's people are destroyed for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6).

I really don't think you offended anyone Julianna.
