When you find yourself on stress overload, what are some of your favorite ways to chill?

Mine:

1. Finding a quiet place to read and/or pray
2. Sitting down at the piano to play/sing praise songs
3. Going for a drive with the music cranked
4. Turning music up as loudly as possible and dancing around my house
5. Finding a quiet body of water to enjoy

One word...RETREAT!

I shrink back into my shell. Whatever I do, I do by myself. I don't want to go out at all...

I used to work in a stressful environment with tight deadlines and anxious customers. When I start getting flustered I would turn my thoughts to the fun things I will get to do when the day is finally over and I get to go home. It might be a delicious frosty shake from a local fast food place, or a good workout in the gym, playing my drums, playing video games, watching something on netflix, or just having a nice dinner. Thinking about it and knowing its waiting for me when I get done always takes the tension off.

If I'm at home, I'll go for a drive, visit the bookstore, browse the magazine section, grab something tasty to eat (usually some frozen yogurt from costco or MickeyD's), work on little projects at home or on the computer, surf the net for interesting articles to read, do some cleaning or reorganizing, or do some shopping.

I tend to find anything in nature to be my retreat. I'll go work in my "garden" (ok, it's a kinda sad attempt at a garden), or I'll take a book out to my back deck and read, or groom Helios (points at my avatar) as he just LOVES attention and is an insanely happy dude, or go for a nature walk ... quiet, peaceful type things ...

I like to get totally mentally lost in a task like woodwork or weeding the garden.

Jig saw puzzles are a good distraction.

Sometimes I go for a walk in the woods by myself.

I love a hot soak in the tub, but it's getting too hot for that.

I am one of those people who need alone time. Being around people all the time wears on me. Nothing is better than just having a day where I turn off the phone and have time all by myself.

2. Road Trip with Music I love to sing.
3. Write down my problem and my prayer about it.
4. Go hiking for a weekend or more.
5. Sleep Forever.

Jesus has given us a good solution to stress 'come unto me all ye who labour and are heavy laden and i will give you rest" also he has given us a day of rest to spend a whole day with Him, what a wonderful time to spend a whole day with God, Heaven on earth.

God Bless

Thanks for the suggestions. My job alone is high pressure..and I'm accustomed to that, but the past week has been extremely horrible. I learned this morning that the person who has been hacking/stalking me for the past two months is someone I trusted and thought very highly of, and my hearing on one side still has not returned from a recent work related head injury. The concussion itself has made it very difficult to control my emotions, so I'm thinking I like NukePooch's suggestion best. Time to crawl into a hole somewhere with the Lord and allow Him to do what He does best, and stay away from folks.

God bless y'all. Thanks again.

I too have a high stress job. And I listen to worship music throughout the day. I also try to get in a few chapters of Bible reading here and there during the day. Lately this has really helped settle my frustrations and brain overload.

You can also turn on the radio to some random station and dance however you want for about 15mins. Great cardio and relievs stress. I caution you that you should do this alone or people will think you are crazy.

When I am stressed most of times I find myself not wanting to talk about it for a bit...and yes, I know this is not so good and that I should try change it..but thats the way I am - not so open... I'd like to just remain in silence...talk to God...listen to music... Be somewhere in an open area (nature), to breathe all the air that I can...ride the bike... But mostly be in places that are not crowded with ppl...not noisy and stuff...

And I should try some of the things mentioned above such as running, swimming...those are things I love to do! I should def remember doing those when I ever feel stressed again...

When I start my day with the bible, I'm not as stressed. It's not something to do because it reduces stress, because I tried it that way before and it didn't help. When I read just to think about God's words and be a little closer to Him, everything feels less horrible, on the whole, like nothing could ruin the day because God is at the center of it an He is perfection. :)

I do deep breathing exercises. I have memorized and recite certain passages of scripture. I listen to Christian music. I try to remember the whole "do unto others" thing. I go for walks around the block. I make sure I have well-rounded, nutritional meals and plenty of water. I make to-do lists and keep my wall calendars up-to-date. I talk with my supervisor about work issues, if needed. I write (duh): poetry, short stories, pieces of longer stories, angry letters I never send, etc. I take long baths with a good book or two (hot in the winter, lukewarm in the summer... It's heavenly!). I spend time with my doggie. And, of course, I pray. A lot.

My job is high-momentum and high-stress. I work in the mental health field, in an arts-based program that serves our entire (humongous) county, so it's important I have ways to release the stress.

Oh, one last thing. If I'm obsessively upset about something (can't think of anything else, angry, feeling hurt and betrayed), I need a friend who can just listen to me while I word-vomit. I just sometimes have to say how unfair life is and how much everything sucks and how angry I am about it. Then, I let it go. It's like deflating a balloon or draining the infection from a boil. Once that feeling isn't inside anymore, I'm better. But I can't visit it more than once, or I start getting upset again. Some people think that's an unhealthy way of dealing with this sort of emotion, but hey, it works. I have one completely neutral support who's agreed to play the role of listener with me when I need it, and it's a great feeling to let it out and feel the instant release of pressure.
